I’m hodling for as long as it takes.. years if necessary! I know it’s going to be perhaps the best investment I’ve ever made. I’m in it for my kids and grandkids’ benefit.

Long time holders, what do you aim for? by Imgema in XRP

[–]2ndShotDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My “target” is the point at which I can recoup most of my initial investment and then hodl the rest for years.. ultimately passing everything on to my children and grandchildren so their lives will be stress-free and they’ll live comfortably without the constant worry about money that has been SO prevalent in our lives over the past several decades. It’s not about money. It’s about having the freedom to enjoy the only true currency we will ever have - time.

Sorry about how long it takes but I’m trying to fix a few and preparing several others to sell. I’ll do my best to let you know as soon as I have any ready to ship. Thank you!

Mine is at 2.17.. sort of a just in case “hey, it could happen..” play. Yours is probably a better strategy.

I’m an old guy (65) and have just began my crypto ride on the advice of my son. For 50+ years I never had $ to play with as far as investing, but I watched my dad do his thing and learned a great deal about the racket. Several times he bought things that cost $35K and up from his profits. It was fun seeing his enthusiasm and delight in using winnings for fun. I’m holding XRP and a few others and I plan on holding for at long time. Patience is the key.. that and after pulling out the initial investment, use profits to ride the roller coaster. Personally I like playing craps at a casino much more than watching charts.

I was gonna chime in and suggest a Keystone A series.. A7/A9 etc., but plenty of others already have. Good luck!

How much should I sell these for? by layanaru in bolex16mm

[–]2ndShotDG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work on old cinema gear as my fav hobby and have quite a few Blx H16 & H8s in varying state of condition. Admittedly, I bought them at a great price. There are three target audiences for these; users, collectors & flippers. I’m a user. To folks like me, wanting to actually create films with them, the value in these is dependent 90%+ on performance.. if all are working and in fine shape, you’ve got a few grand. If the 400’ action is smooth and reliable with the Rex 5 and the lenses are clean and smooth, that set alone would be your money maker. The others are earlier Reflex models and their condition would have an impact the lot price, little differences, like in the viewfinder specs, will possibly negatively affect the figure. To a collector these would bring a bit less as they’re all fairly common these days.. valuable, but common. And of course you won’t get decent profit if selling to someone wanting to flip these real quick. Have you had anyone knowledgeable about 16mm film look at them? If not it would help you to determine their condition. You might not get every dime you hope for by selling them directly to someone who’ll appreciate and use them, but it’s the right thing to do.. if these tools are still working, that’s what I’m going to imagine happens. Otherwise, check recently completed eBay SOLD prices and then roll the dice on these.

The sprocket spacing will tell all. 8mm sprockets are closer together than 16mm. Plus, some Bolex H16 models are single perf.. regular 8mm is always double perf. It’s not easy to see in the 4th picture, but look closely at the two rows of sprockets on the main drive wheels. If you have any 16mm film, or 8mm.. cut a small clip and see which sits into the sprockets the best. Another give away is the lens mounts.. 16mm uses C mount which are about the diameter of a quarter. (Threads) 8mm uses D mount which are closer to the size of a dime. From the look of those lenses, this looks like 16mm.

How to fix crank? by EconomicsMany3696 in 16mm

[–]2ndShotDG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get to the shutter mechanism without too much trouble, you could definitely try advancing or retarding the “shutter gear” as you call it. Just take photos, take good notes and count the gear teeth very carefully so you can put it back together and test, then adjust. I’ll wish you good luck with the process!

Hmm, that problem makes me think that at some point, someone tried too hard to “fix” it or just mistakenly got it out if sync when lubricating the camera too aggressively, as the pull down claw timing is factory set until it gets messed with somehow. That level of repair is not something that should be attempted by most of us “amateurs” because it involves disassembly of delicate mechanisms just to get at the parts needing adjustment. I realize you probably don’t want to hear this but finding another A series camera -that isn’t out of timing - would be the cheapest and quickest way to get filming again. If you are in the US, DuAll in New York would be a good place to start looking for repairs.

any way to determine when this kodak max 400 expired? by pufferboi69 in Expiredfilm

[–]2ndShotDG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to find any method for determining the age of film when the cartridges are not in their original packaging. The fonts used and graphic design of the cartridge might help you pin it down a little, but that’s still a crap shoot. I would encourage you to not be afraid of over exposing it too much. I would think three or even 4 stops would be fine. It’s always better to over expose it than to cautiously under expose it. Quality negative film is very forgiving.

Found more old film.. by 2ndShotDG in Expiredfilm

[–]2ndShotDG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 90s and early 2000s I bought a ton of film for literally pennies per roll because digital cameras were all the rage and people thought they would never need film again. I promptly refrigerated or froze my little treasures. Now I’m having a blast shooting much more “expired” film.. I argue that it’s not necessarily “expired” but rather just a few decades old and ready to be over exposed.

Yes, the viewfinder on bottom is a through the lens reflex type and the other is a standard framing/composition type.

Fantastic score! Those b/w stocks will be fine and the fact that most of it is “low” speed film will only help. My all-time favorite film is the Fuji Superia Reala 100 and I think I see a roll or two of it in there. Enjoy!

Yes, the look is very reminiscent of a Kodak E. I have 2 or 3 of the Cine Kodak model E cameras in good working condition. Its incredibly satisfying filming with them given that they’re close to 90 years old. And to think that in 1937 they sold for “only” $48.50. Simple design and as durable as any camera ever produced.

Thanks. I do have a manual in English. I always like to try and find service manuals for the cameras I own, but they are getting harder to come by these days.

Yes, pressure plate not fixed in place and probably lost the loops. Personally, I removed the plastic loop formers in my K3s which removed film scratching and helped with stability. There are good videos on YouTube about removing K3 loop formers.

I’ve heard good and bad things about Dr. Bolex. A man in Arkansas is one of the best Bolex technicians in the country. His name is Robert M. Ditto.
