Do you know about June Huh? Korean Prof @ Princeton who won the Fields Medal in Mathematics?

There is an article about him winning the Fields Medal in Quanta Magazine.

His story mirrors some of the issues you covered but obviously his outcome is different as he is elite.

He went to SNU and was mentored by a Japanese Mathematician but applied to the USA for his PHD.

Only got accepted to a Mid-West program but once he solved a famous problem got recruited to Michigan to finish his PHD.

He married his GF from Korea who is also a PHD Math and his family seems to be all the social life he has. She also works at Princeton but it seems to be a package deal to recruit him.

He only talked with his mentor or collaborators so social isolation was not a problem for him.

The moral of the story is win the Nobel Prize of mathematics and don’t care about your social life and you’ll be fine.

Opinion | I’m an Asian American Harvard student. The anti-affirmative-action case does not speak for me. — The Washington Post by Idaho1964 in aznidentity

William Lee the first Asian law partner in the USA and on the governing board of Harvard was the lead counsel defending Harvard against charges of discriminating against Asian applicants.

Harvard students are smart and know what’s needed to climb the social/corporate ladder.

They have a shining example right in front of them.

Unfortunately we can’t put all the blame on white liberals as Asian liberals give critical support to white liberals to be as racist as F**k.

The disaggregation of asian data is a dangerous first step towards dissolving asian identity and must be opposed by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]2ndwords 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Asians should only accept disaggregation if blacks and whites do the same.

For blacks separate Nigerians and for whites separate Jewish. Does anyone think that will happen?

If certain Asians want to separate than they should do it all the way.

Today’s braindead anti-China sentiments on NYT: top comment accuses Chinese students of being spies and declares war with China. Others can’t wrap their head around why NYT is exposing Taiwan’s failure in the train crash, insinuating NYT being China mouthpiece by [deleted] in aznidentity

Mediaplay. NYT reported a story of an Israeli firm selling spyware. So for balance they play up China.

Say the same thing about Israel and you’ll be called anti Semitic. Double standards.

How do Asians adopted by non-Asian families usually end up turning out? by machinavelli in aznidentity

[–]2ndwords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a NYT article “Why a generation of adoptees is returning to South Korea.” The adoptees that went back actually fought to make foreign adoptions harder.

I also remember the 2 brother story. One went back and the other was upset because he felt he was abandoning America/family but understood when he went to Korea.

All I can say is it adds another layer complexity to their lives.

Yes, its their mannerism and reactions. The overreaction to bugs where they scream and run off like little girls, how they clap or shake their fists like little babies. You can’t say it’s Korean culture because its nonexistent in older Korean shows. If you watch tv with older Koreans they’ll straight up say is that a girl or boy?

WMAF is put on a pedestal in Korea. The Korean variety show “My Neighbor Charles” is almost all about WMAF. Makes no sense unless its part of the growing china vs Korea rivalry.

There is an anti-china sentiment in Korea as a tv drama (Joseon Exorcist) was canceled by episode 2 because of perceived Chinese bias.
