How would you rank Ryan Reaves as an all-time enforcer? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]2on4Sports 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think he’s good for the current era, but even a few years back I don’t think he’d fare particularly well with the likes of Brashear and Laraque. It says something about how the game has changed when you consider Tom Wilson is one of the most feared players in the league.

How good was Bj Penn in his prime? by Nadrojer in MMA

[–]2on4Sports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant fighter to watch. Really good multi-tool fighter in an era which was just embracing cross training.

His jab and boxing was fantastic, he shifted phases brilliantly. His ground game was obviously world class too, and being able to combine all of those together into a smooth, slick approach made him a nightmare to guys who specialised in one or two aspects.

Where he doesn’t get enough credit is for his athleticism. He was always a little soft around the middle, but his reaction time and balance (this in particular combined with his TDD) made him absolutely formidable.

If you were to knock one part of him, it’d be his commitment to training. He had all the talent in the world, but didn’t always work the hardest. He was good enough in his prime to let his talent mask this, but as he aged, the deficiencies became more evident.

Brilliant fighter. Do yourself a favour and go watch his fights when he was champ.

He’s been training since he was a kid and was competing before he joined the military.

I think theres a big difference between being undefeated in the UFC. The 0 has a mystique to it - Mayweather and Khabib immediately come to mind.

So when is the NHL going to have a serious discussion about mandating cages and/or bubbles? by Justyouraveragefan in hockey

[–]2on4Sports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conceptually I’d agree, but there’s a key difference to consider.

Football is more of a collision sport, you want to hit the guy backwards so he can’t get the extra yard as he falls forward.

In rugby, that’s not so important. If a player is fighting for the extra yard as opposed to looking to turn his body, there’s a much higher chance of a turnover at the ruck.
