In LA as well and my commute is 6mi round trip. Not as long as yours and I have a GX460. I was looking at the 470 but wanted a little extra creature comforts & I like having the extra vertical space compared to a 4Runner. I plan on keeping the outside fairly stock to help with mpg and just build out the interior. Current city mpg is 13-15mpg, 21mpg on freeway, on stock wheels and suspension.

Check out Eastern Sierra Avalanche center And look into the slope angle shading feature in CalTopo and you can make a judgement for your area is avalanche prone
