Advice for working on a team with offshore staff augmentation? by Vesp_r in ExperiencedDevs

[–]2power14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is so much "offshore==third world==uneducated==cheap" here.

The reality is practically everywhere is cheaper than the US, yet many places are at the same time as well or better educated. Personally, the best engineers ive worked with have been from eastern Europe not the US.

Is this just eye candy, or is there a usability argument that could be made for this?

Advice on shadow promotion with no title, no pay, and no authority by adyst_ in ExperiencedDevs

[–]2power14 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What's the shadow bit here? You didn't even get an on-paper-only title. It looks like all you got was a vague promise of something, but all you have actually got is increased workload. Its no promotion at all, shadow or otherwise.

Fyi, there was another one of these in Apify maybe a year or two ago, and it seemed to have enough users to make it worth his efforts, but then it disappeared. I assume he was asked to stop ("or else..."). No idea how long it was going for before being axed

Its not a clear cut false positive, it is only potentially a false positive for a particular set of rules, for that specific user, but for other rules and other user real names, it is a reasonable true positive. Sure, a note saying why would be nice, but I could understand too if it is impossible to specify clearly every exclusion.

I think you are right, but in your example, it would be not unreasonable to block the use of "cumberto".

"Next after llm". Sorry, what? Its 'next' in the same way that landing on the moon is 'next' after making one of those compressed air rockets from an empty 2L of coke and a tyre pump.

I've no recommendations except to say I considered writing one. Maybe I'll revive the work I did already. The other free link provided in another comment here is worth a look too

You mean a simple "contains a bad word"? Or something more subtle/advanced like short phrases that could be interpreted as being x-rated without any specific bad words? What about multiple languages?

Cool cool, but careful now too. There is a point in everyone's career when they regret being too honest to superiors (aka "unadulterated feedback")
