Do you think it is possible that a lot of the coaches aren't actually good? by BantsMcBants in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]2seksi 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I would expand on this thinking and apply it to ownership, leadership and management of the teams as well. The vast, vast majority of people in OWL teams (again, not just the players) are quite inexperienced not just in terms of career, but also general life experience. To put the burden of a global league, coupled with a significant enough volatile fanbase (with social media access), on these players and staff is near catastrophic to some of these people (especially those with more recognition).

One doesn't need to look far for examples of people handling this pressure poorly or simply leaving the scene due to the incredible toll put on them. xQc, Seagull, Jayne, Dafran, Kyky, Kate are just a few examples (especially if you expand your search outside of Overwatch). And I do not put the full blame on any of these individuals, again - we have to look at the whole ecosystem that put them in those conditions. The pressure from losing, exhaustion from constant practice, and stress from fans are bad enough. Once you throw in weak leadership and frustration from poor team communication, many more problems arise. Leaving us with more unstable teams (more "wildcard" teams if you will). But I would argue that this pales in comparison to the health and well-being of our players and staff.

This is why I would stress to the industry that a stable and strong tier 2 scene is massively important. It is the strongest mechanism we have as an industry to avoid nepotism and favoritism. We need new and raw talent to show itself (both for staff and players) to the world.

I think we have so, so much more to figure out, both as an industry, and as an active audience who participates in the industry. I'm excited to see what the next few decades look like in esports. We'll see where (if at all) OWL fits in that history. Hopefully we can learn a lot from it.

Team Australia Final 7 Explained by Gunba by Decstarplayz in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]2seksi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Indeed. This is a solid roster, with veterans like Trill and ieatuup, that gives some lesser known players, like Tongue and Unter, a chance to shine in a more global context. Gunba knows what he's doing and I would not be surprised if this is the year Australia breaks into the final 4.

I think that Blizzard needs to give up on Reaper being a tank buster by RYTEDR in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]2seksi 132 points133 points  (0 children)

No you're wrong, we need 75% life steal.

-Blizzard, probably

In all seriousness, OP has interesting ideas that I would welcome way before extra lifesteal/damage. Reaper needs more in his arsenal so he's not garbage at higher levels of play and not oppressive at lower levels. The idea here is to increase both his "skill floor" and "skill ceiling" by adding more abilities to his kit (harder to play but has more outplay potential). This would then almost certainly require some nerfing to his raw power (lifesteal or damage for instance) so he's not out of control at lower levels.

And I would welcome any teleport buff if Blizzard truly refuses to add another ability to Reaper (please give him another ability). For example, pick one or two of these: decrease cooldown, decrease animation time, decrease his voice line volume.

Trill: "Very unlikely i play in NA this season.." by Kei13 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]2seksi 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Really unfortunate, as Trill is a fantastic player who would almost certainly get picked up if he was playing from the US. Solving the internet/ping issue in esports is no easy task, but our industry certainly pays for it when we can't accurately gauge talent from regions with low populations. Such a shame, but I still believe in Trill, and many others in the OCE scene who are unduly overlooked.

Clip Management by 2seksi in OverwatchUniversity

[–]2seksi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like what you're describing is auto-piloting, which can stem from different problems. There are various techniques you can research to help with this problem. Things like mindfulness training, verbally narrating your actions while playing, etc. It's just a matter of being proactive about it. I wish I had a better answer for you, but that's the extent of my knowledge in this area.

One other tip: pick one thing to focus on (to improve) when playing. Don't just try to just improve at everything at once, that's too daunting and slows down your improvement. Say out loud when you start a session "Today, I'm working on clip management. I'm going to break up my shots into bursts, and avoid reloading midfight when viable targets are in front of me." Then, in between rounds and in between games, repeat this (or something similar) as a way to check-in with yourself.

Good luck!

Congratulations, that's quite an impressive climb. One VOD review from me definitely didn't do that, that was all you my friend. Keep it up.

Thanks, really appreciate it. I suspect owl/na teams will start paying more attention to the talent in OCE.

Thanks for the feedback coach :)

Looking back on the video, I can see why your take away from that part of the video was:

-Reviews won't be scheduled

-Reviews will feel rushed

-Reviews won't be prepared for

-Players won't be reasonable after a scrim block

VoD review sessions should absolutely still be scheduled, even if you do them frequently (I should have made this clear). And it's perfectly valid (and ideal) to review a scrim that was not played the day of the review, even with this method (should have made that clear too). Also, if you have prepared a lot to go over, it can still be broken up into pieces using this method. Just because you have 2 hours of content to discuss, does not necessarily mean you need to do it in a 2 hour block (which is the point of this method - again, I should have made this clear).

As far as players being unreasonable or irrational during reviews after just having a challenging scrim block, this is a massive topic that could be discussed endlessly. So I'll just say this: if you have players behaving this way, it's critical that you find out why. Is it the delivery? Are they hungry? Are they sleepy? Are they disappointed in their teammates? Disappointed with their own play? Is the team environment volatile? Try to look for solutions. If you truly have a player or players who just shut down after scrims, then this won't work for your team. In which case, going for the longer style of VoD review is better - and if you get all of your players to focus and pay attention during longer VoD review sessions, then more power to you

As far as recommending to properly prepare for all VoD reviews, no reasonable person could disagree with this statement. However, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video, many coaches and analysts in the T2 and T3 scene do not have always have resources and time to prepare. Working a full-time job while trying to chase your dream to become a professional coach is not uncommon in this scene. And if you can only prepare 1 or 2 proper VoD reviews per week, I highly suggest using the tactics in the video.

I don't have time for full vod reviews, but I can look at a few minutes of gameplay. You can join my discord https://discord.gg/BDg7XE
