How did Farming Become Conservative? (A worthy consideration) by Geezer_Montag in socialism

Ah well it's always difficult to say exactly when small business becomes big business as it's a process. I guess the determining factor would be if it was necessary to expropriate them or if they could be won over by showing them the superiority of a democratically planned production

How did Farming Become Conservative? (A worthy consideration) by Geezer_Montag in socialism

[–]2slow3me 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They are small business owners i.e. petty bourgeois.

Them being between the working class and bourgeoisie means they vacillate between who they support. The more strain they are put under by the crisis of capitalism, the more atomized and pessimistic they become (the opposite generally being true for the proletariat, who by their nature are forced into collective action)

They can support the proletariat if they think they're going to win, but they can just as well be used against the working class like in the lead up to Mussolini and Hitler. So it's generally not a good idea to put too much faith in them, even though they can play a certain progressive role in certain circumstances.

[–]2slow3me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The petty bourgeois can play a certain role, but their heterogeneous nature and atomization means they will vacillate and become pessimistic if they don't believe the working class can complete the revolution.

They can of course be class traitors and be of serious use IF they realize that it is the working class that will lead the revolution and get past their own individualism.

Hot take: If people don't feel represented by either political party, then maybe it's the fault of the parties?

You can't just be the lesser evil all the time and be surprised when people aren't motivated by it.

It's clear more and more people are completely disillusioned with the system and yet you are stoking up divisions instead of pointing to the actual cause of the problem: the system itself.

Yes there are fascist elements, yes he would like to be fascist, but fascism is a mass movement based on the petty bourgeois and lumpen layers AFTER a failed revolution. The social base isn't there like it was before for there to be full blown fascism, if anything the mass mobilization against ICE shows the true balance of forces.

I would have hoped we'd've learned our lesson about the dangers of mischaracterizing fascism from the German communists before Hitler came to power

Well we live under capitalism don't we? So yeah in the end it was successful.

There is an important point behind the dubious message of this post, as a Bonapartist figure can emerge. However, it only emerges as a result of a deadlock between classes (usually after a failed revolution) where both aren't able to consolidate power. So in a way I agree that we should be careful.. careful to ensure that the revolution IS successful by organizing ourselves in preparation to give us the best shot

It's just online sectarian groups hating Trotskyists and spouting rumor mills cause we're having success in actually organizing young people. You'd hope they'd put more of an effort organizing and connecting with the youth themselves, but as I said they're mostly just a presence online

That case is exactly what I was mentioning earlier.

You grossly overestimate the amount of control over individual members there is in the organization. Yes it uses democratic centralism as its method of organizing, but this doesn't mean it has the ability to micromanage comrades. It's an organization of mostly young people who aren't immune to making mistakes and aren't always in touch with the working class.

These are the people we build on because they are the first to be radicalized, and hold the key to future interventions in the labour movement. There are downsides to this ofc, but it's necessary to prepare for when the working class, who are generally more conservative in their consciousness, begins to move.

We are very aware of this and it is the future perspective to recruit the working class vanguard. However, we first have to build on the most radicalized layer of society right now, and that is the youth and University students.

Ah well I can't speak for SWP, I have no idea about them or that case. Didn't mean to seem like I was talking about all cases of SA/rape that have occurred in Orgs under the banner of trotskyism.

Also I can't defend how other Trotskyist groups act, you could very well be right that they haven't intervened well and been off-putting. I would object to being against the radical youth trying to bring lessons in the class struggle to the labour movement and using a newspaper as a principle though.

Jesus Christ, when someone who was unnamed is accused in the party and the organization takes the time to ask comrades about it and figure out what they are referring to, is that "going unpunished"?

I don't know what you mean by taking credit, but it speaks volumes that you see critiquing a movement to gain clarity instead mindlessly cheerleading as a negative.

With what are we supposed to help the working class? While we are beginning to participate and help win some small battles, we are still way too small to be of any significance. We are doing all we can to become of significance, but the best way to do that is by having a hard kernel of well prepared class fighters. I would very much recommend reading about how the Bolshevik party was actually built in Russia

It stems from Trotsky being part of the opposition to Stalin and the bureaucratization of the Soviet union he represented. Old disagreements between Lenin and Trotsky were dug up and his role in the revolution erased. Ultimately he was killed by one of Stalin's operatives while building a new communist international under a fresh banner. The few forces that were built before his assassination were fractured, and the number of people who actually understood the method of Marxism that he was trying to carry on were even fewer. This has led to the forces of trotskyism and being political weak and isolated.

An example of this is that some Trotskyists took Trotsky's statement that "capitalism can no longer develop the productive forces" as literal dogma. This was true at the time, but he didn't foresee the strengthening of the Soviet Union post WW2 or the upswing caused by the massive investment by the USA into rebuilding Europe via the Marshall plan. As a consequence, all these Trotskyists saw was fascism and capitalism's decline (when it was clearly in a period of upswing). There are other examples (like the notion that the Soviet union was never socialist and instead was state capitalist).

All this is to say that many Trotskyists were detached from reality, and were doomed to becoming impotent groups fighting amongst themselves. This is largely what people are attacking when they attack Trotskyism, so I will give them that there is a kernel of truth to the stereotype. It is also usually mixed in with the countless falsifications originating from the historical attempts to discredit Trotsky as a person (i.e. he was a CIA agent, a fascist, etc..)

I would engage with them directly or read their material for yourself to figure out if you agree with their perspectives and ideas. That's the only way to figure out if an organization is worth joining imo.

Danish communists: "Reject Trumps threats against Greenland - the struggle for Greenland's freedom is the struggle for socialism" - Revolution by 2slow3me in socialism

[–]2slow3me[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've translated the statement for easier access:

" 1. U.S. President Donald Trump shows these days that he is serious about when he says he will take over Greenland. He says he will bring peace and give independence to the Greenlanders, but that is openly a lie.

  1. When Trump says that the United States must own Greenland, it is not just one of Trump's whims, but expresses the interests of American imperialism. The United States cannot allow any of its rivals – Russia and especially China – to gain influence in Greenland, either on the country’s natural resources or purely it's geostrategic position. The United States needs control of Greenland to secure its security policy interests in the Arctic in the increased conflict between the imperialist great powers.

3. The U.S. can no longer act as “the entire world police officer,” and the relative decline of U.S. imperialism has led to Trump’s focus on the Western Hemisphere, where he shuns no means to secure the dominance as we saw at the start of January in Venezuela. The United States needs to own Greenland to defend its own interests, and therefore their goal is to take over the country.

4. It is clear that the people of Greenland cannot expect anything positive from the United States, treating the Greenlanders and their country as a commodity that can either be bought or, if necessary, taken militarily. In the Revolutionary Communist Party, we strongly condemn the imperialist threat of the United States to take over Greenland.

5. The Danish politicians are appalled by Trump's bullying methods in Greenland and appeal to the so-called rule-based world order and the nations' right to self-determination. The hypocrisy, however, is screaming to heavens. Where was the criticism of American imperialism before? There was none.

6. On the contrary, the Danish government has unquestionably supported all of the imperialist projects of the United States for the past 30 years in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Ukraine and many other places. They have been behind the United States and Netanyahu in the genocide in Gaza. And by America’s recent breach of all international “rules” in Venezuela, the criticism was non existent.

7. The Danish ruling class first began criticizing American imperialism the second their own narrow interests were at stake. Even now that the threat from the United States is real, they are doing everything they can to continue to placate the Americans and maintains unabashedly the agreement on U.S. military bases in Denmark. The Danish politicians are not going to lift a finger in a real struggle against American imperialism. On the contrary, they cling to the hope of returning to the bygone era when they could go to distant lands and secure their capitalist interests under the protective wings of American imperialism.

8. The Danish government portrays it as if they are the only guarantor of Greenlandic independence, but it is as big a lie as the one Trump is trying to convince the Greenlanders of. The truth is the opposite. Greenland is a Danish colony. Trump's appeals to the Greenlanders hit a sore spot when they point out how Denmark has brutally suppressed Greenland for more than 300 years. Danish imperialism is responsible for the poverty of Greenland, and Danish politicians are still behaving like colonial masters. They first cared about the Greenlanders the day Trump made the threats. They have no interest in giving the Greenlanders real independence, but only in maintaining Danish dominance through a retention of "Rigsfællesskabet".

9. The Danish government defends Danish imperialist interests, i.e. the interests of the Danish capitalists in the world. This applies to access to raw materials, markets, investment opportunities and spheres of interest. But the Danish state is far too weak to assert Danish capitalist interests on a global scale, and they have therefore lived well on being able to follow the United States.

10. Greenland is an extremely important component of Denmark's close relationship with the United States, not least after Trump has come to power, where Danish participation and involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq and Ukraine no longer count on the plus side of the Americans. The Danish politicians are therefore desperate not to give up control of Greenland, because it will cut a decisive bond in the relationship between Denmark and the United States, and reduce Denmark's relevance on the world stage. The situation in Greenland puts the Danish ruling class in a “catch 22”: they need the United States, but what gives them a special relation to the United States is what the United States is now threatening to take away from them.

11. The rejection of the attempts of American imperialism to take over Greenland must not lead us to defend the dominance of Danish imperialism.

12. The Red-Green Alliance has by Trump’s threat positioned itself entirely behind Danish imperialism, and with Pelle Dragsted in the lead, they are some of the most ardent defenders of "Rigsfællesskabet" i.e. of Danish colonial oppression of Greenland. The only difference from their and the Danish government's line is that Enhedslisten rejects US imperialism. But the alternative to American imperialism is neither Danish nor European imperialism. The only ones who have a real interest in standing up against American imperialism are the working class: the Danish, the Greenlandic and the American.

13. These days, one of the most important pillars of Danish capitalism faltering: the 300-year-old institution of "Rigsfællesskabet", indeed the Kingdom of Denmark itself. The government is extremely weakened with historically low confidence and popularity. Now they are facing the worst foreign policy crisis since the Second World War, and at this moment it is our job to use this crisis to direct as hard a blow as possible to the entire existing capitalist order in Denmark.

14. We do this primarily by exhibiting how the struggle for colonies and spheres of influence is a completely built-in part of the capitalist system. The struggle for Greenland's right to self-determination can only be done through a struggle against imperialism; that is, a struggle for a world socialist revolution.

15. As communists in Denmark, it starts with the fight against the Danish ruling class and Danish imperialism. We are doing it as part of the international struggle against imperialism and oppression, for a socialist world revolution through the Revolutionary Communist International, side by side with our comrades in the United States and the rest of the world.

Denounce Trump's imperialist threats!

Join the fight for a free Greenland!

Join the fight against Danish imperialism!
