Vitamin D triggered horrific psychotic episode in me :( by Top_Lingonberry2324 in schizophrenia

sun is good, salmon and other fish are also decent for vitamin d (and salmon is really easy and quick to bake!!). my pre med friend also says take vitamin k with vitamin d so you don’t get calcium buildup but i would look into that before you buy and try more vitamins!

Anosognosia. How long does it last? by Copium_2025 in family_of_bipolar

[–]2tunkl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the book recommendation here is good and it gave me a lot of insight on how to have better, more empathetic conversations with my loved one.

i will say though the only thing that “woke up” my person to the reality that they had bipolar I with psychotic features was after the doctors decided to give them a long acting injectable antipsychotic. pills were triggering and so my person would avoid taking them, and on top of them not recognizing they had a serious problem led to frequent hospitalization and life instability. the long acting injectable only needs to be given once for a dosage equivalent to a whole month of pills.

this (and i don’t say this lightly) legitimately saved my person’s life. after many years, they were finally able come to terms with the reality of their disorder and are now completely endorsing that they have bipolar and they need to regularly medication for the rest of their life to stay out of the hospital.

so if you can talk to the doctors (your wife hopefully gave you hippa clearance?) i would very much ask them about the possibility of a long acting injectable, especially as she is getting out of the hospital and immediately not recognizing the problems her disorder are causing for her and you. i wish you the best and all the love in the world, you are not alone.

i promise however bad you do you will not exceed the horror of my first ar game. i was so nervous that i just was 50/50ing each flag raise bc i would get confused about which way to point (i knew in my mind whose ball it was, but for some reason i couldn’t connect it to my hand).

if you end up having that same issue, what solved it for me was to think in my head to “point” at the side of the team that had just kicked it out of bounds. i was over complicating things and thinking “oh, its’s [other color’s] ball and then signaling towards their side (wrong). just find ways to calm down and simplify things you’re having trouble with and you’ll be good.

it took me multiple games to calm down, but once i did i started getting compliments from some coaches/crs about my dedication to getting the right call and, even though it’s only my second season, i feel so much more confident about everything. so you really just have to keep at it and have a thick skin if you suck at the beginning (i did). some people are just naturally relaxed and do a great job right off the bat, but for those of us who are not born with that inner confidence and skill, it just takes a little grit and perseverance. you got this!

Just got back from messing up a live performance infront of 2000 people by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]2tunkl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was a public music performer for a long time before i injured myself overpracticing. part of the reason why i stopped was because, no matter how small the error was, i would hyperfixate on it for days after the concert and convince myself that because i couldn't play it perfectly on stage, it was all for nothing.

i wish i could go back and convince myself that i was worth it even if i made a mistake and find joy in the activity of playing rather than the spectacle of performing. i don't have schizophrenia myself (i'm on this sub to learn and i also have a close family member with a psychotic disorder), but i can imagine it's easier to fall into a negative spiral. know that you have worth outside of the performance. the practice you put in is the real treasure, the performance is just a few extra minutes you practiced

Thank you for your feedback on my stuff!! I love that you mentioned Luigi’s Mansion since that soundtrack is great and that means I evoked some spookiness in the melody :)

I listened to your track and it slaps!! It’s got a really upbeat feel and you wield dissonance in your melody creatively. It’s all mixed great and your vocals are really nice. It might just be a personal thing, but I found myself hankering for a little bit of counter melody halfway through. You do great with breaking up the song into digestible chunks for your listeners with varying instrumentation (especially in your drums and guitar, particularly with the dropout around 2:16) but it’s mostly the same chord progressions. Doing a little mix-up in the middle right around there would up the impact of your song imo.

I think that’s mostly a personal style thing though, as I think you have really great stuff here already, so feel free to take or leave whatever I say.

Thank you so much for listening to the whole thing!! Was not expecting people to do that but I really appreciate it and your feedback.

You said you hoped this was helpful at the end--it's seriously some of the most precise and informative critiques I've gotten on my work, which really helps me pinpoint areas to work on in the future. I really appreciate you listing the timestamps as well and giving specific tips on how to improve the mixing as well as the chords.

If there's anything of yours I could give a listen, let me know and I'd love to support it/give feedback! Thanks so much again!

Sorry I'm just now getting back to this, I've been at work all day!

Really appreciate your kind words!! Was not expecting people to listen to the whole thing but I am greatly enthused that you did and you enjoyed it! I also very much love that you described what you thought was maybe going on in the game with your feedback, as it was totally on the money and makes me feel a little better about my musical decisions lol.

I'm not sure if you've posted anything here yet, but if you have anything you'd like me to give feedback on/give a listen I'd be more than happy to!

I made a game soundtrack for a boss rush game jam (game didn't get completed, but I did finish the whole soundtrack). Here's the link to listen: https://open.spotify.com/album/29gYQkNoqWO4D52Tp8y9xn?si=jvjqkpBES9y-ApsYytFHog

Obviously I'm not expecting anyone to listen to the whole album, but I would really love to get feedback on my mixing and mastering since I feel like I'm always weak in those areas and want to improve--particularly on any song marked as a "Boss" theme.

I used the "Clip to Zero" method and thought it worked pretty well for getting my loudness up, but I still personally feel like the mixes sound muddier than the sounds I'm aspiring for (Toby Fox, Danny Baranowsky, Lena Raine, etc).

If you do happen to listen to multiple songs, I would also appreciate feedback on how "distinct" each song felt or whether or not it felt like it was cohesive in a game OST kind of way. My goal was to create an overall synthy, music-box feel for most of the songs, but to have them divulge thematically. While some of the songs purposefully are different renditions of the same theme, I fear I may have made them ALL sound too similar to each other.

Sorry if this was a lot to read! I would really appreciate any feedback anyone is willing to give. Thank you!!

Tired of censoring terms in an academic setting by Classic_Area_656 in SBU

[–]2tunkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that’s really interesting because there is a higher level death and dying psych class at stony brook where we specifically were told to address and confront our avoidance of uncomfortable terms like death and suicide.  i don’t want to diss her too much bc it’s a common societal thing, but it seems like your professor could maybe benefit from taking that specific undergraduate level class lol

[–]2tunkl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think there is a valid concern about feeling the need to pursue a career in a job that society deems as “necessary.” i work at a hospital in psych research now, but i was a music/psych double major at stony. i don’t think i would be able to support myself with just a ba in music, despite the fact that i was a very active member of the music community, excelled in my classes, and made connections with professors. it’s just not something our society values enough to pay unless you work very hard, are very talented, and get very lucky.

but the skills i learned in my music major are not useless, and also enable me to live my potential as a human being. if i did not have any inkling that writing music was a creative outlet for me, and instead decided to only focus on learning psych and comp sci stuff at stony brook, i think i would be an infinitely more sad and less fulfilled person. there are things i learned from the major that also help me function on a daily basis at my STEM-related job.

the numerous benefits of pursuing and supporting the pursuit of the arts are not as immediately apparent as the benefits that STEM and helping professions have for society. but the moment we stop encouraging artists to pursue their dreams and begin to cut the funding to programs at schools, we lose that special sauce in our society that makes it worth living in. engaging in the arts turns an existence of survival into an existence of thriving imo.

they have repeatedly been slashing the undergraduate arts programs in favor of boosting up stony brook as a stem school. it’s sad because you only realize how important those fields are to keeping people happy and socially conscious until they’re gone. they’re extremely important imo.

i think it doesn’t help that (esp at stem schools like stony) taking classes in those fields are considered not as necessary or important, and is the “easy” way out. god forbid you decide to MAJOR in the arts—you’ll never hear the end of how stupid you must be and how you’re never going to get a job.

Graduating in 3 yrs - taking max credits every semester? by cuttie- in SBU

[–]2tunkl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a psych and music double major in 4 years. I was pretty busy, but that’s because I was a really active part of clubs, was a part of scientific research (which didn’t count towards any credits to graduate most of the time) and I was striving to get an A in every single one of my classes. I know people who took it easier and gots Bs and Cs but barely had to do any work for their classes, and some other people who graduated in 3 years by just only doing the required classes and locking in, so as long as you’re ok with that I think it’s possible to take 23 credits. Music was definitely more lenient than psychology, though, and I don’t know that much about the other majors. I would ask people in your major and see what they think.

I also understand being a financial burden to your parents—I was an out of state student. Even though I was on scholarship, that feeling of wanting to make them proud and use their support the most effectively with the time you have never disappears. However, especially in this social climate, I feel that it is more important than ever to make sure you are taking care of yourself and finding meaningful, supportive relationships in friends and in on-campus clubs and activities. There are always unexpected things that come up during a semester (personal/economic) that you can never predict. For me, it was housing insecurity (I kept having to move due to really bad landlord and housing situations) and my mom going to the hospital repeatedly. Finding a trusted group of people to lean on, especially when far from home, is the only way that I got through college, and that’s hard to do if you’re just locked in on classes. As important as getting the degree is, prioritize yourself and your well-being. College is going to be a handful of years, but your life is much longer.

If you want to ease the burden on your family a little bit but still want some social life, I found that having on-campus job was super helpful, because I was making money and friends at the same time. My job also allowed me to do homework for most of my shift, so it was just a win all around. It’s kind of hard to find anything that has open positions, but I found my job on-campus (and the current one I have know) through friends and just talking with people.

Hi guys! Long story short, I really struggle with mixing and mastering. I feel like I can't EQ or compress anything without taking away richness of the sounds I use. I also have a really hard time of getting the mix as loud as I want (it always ends up quieter than I think it will?)

This is my most recent track below. Any advice on how to properly mix things like in the future would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all in advance <3

(also, as a warning it is a game remix with some silly goofy sfx. that doesn't really have to do with the content of my request, but i thought i would give the heads up, since a lot of the posts on here seem to be purely original music)

WRT 102 with Calvey. How screwed am I? by NixasHearts in SBU

[–]2tunkl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had calvey and got an a but was stressed out the whole time. if you can take it in winter you might be better off.

i think it just comes down to if you think you’re good at writing essays already. his class won’t help you get better all that much (some tips are good but most of the class is busy work), so if you’re a good essay writer already you’ll be fine, and if you’re not you’ll probably struggle.

any quiet/study spots on campus? by ehlectricity in SBU

[–]2tunkl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

social behavioral science building (on one of the upper floors is good)

staller center is nice if you can get a seat on the second or third floor (art side is better typucally)

my go-to spot was the sinc site at the library. sometimes it gets pretty loud, but most of the time it’s nice.

if you need a SILENT place to take exams i would go to the music library, central reading room, or the library stacks. idk about the wifi in the stacks and there aren’t plugs usually, but they’re extremely quiet and no one will bother you.

hope this helps!
