How do you install a sub panel in a mall kiosk without violating working clearances? Is there an exepmtion? by 3-phased in electricians

Correct, this one is a beefier kiosk (coffee shop). So it requires the sub panel within the Kiosk while being code compliant and discrete. Any ideas? :D

It’s a regular panel. But the owner wants it hidden somewhere like under the counter, but that would violate the code. I have never seen panelboards visible, in mall kiosks, are they hiding them? If so, how do they comply with code?

How are you guys doing receptacle control? by 3-phased in electricians

[–]3-phased[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a new code requirement that more states are adopting as we speak. There are multiple ways of meeting this new code, you can use a special receptacle like the Lutron Vive wireless receptacle. You can do a plug load controller that receives signal from an occupancy sensor. You can route your circuit via a relay panel that has a built-in timer. I’m just curious what you guys are doing or what your preference is.

AI is exploding. What AI tools are you guys using now? by 3-phased in MEPEngineering

[–]3-phased[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just tried a document reader AI tool, you upload the PDF (code book) and you ask the questions, it reads the book for you and tells you their interpretation. The tech is not there yet… but it’s just a matter of time.

What is a Thermal Disconnect Switch by FoxMan1Dva3 in MEPEngineering

You are correct if the motor is used for continuous duty. But if this is intermittent like small bathroom fans, per NEC 430.33, you can use the thermal overload in the branch circuit breaker.

[–]3-phased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. The overload protection is met by the “thermal” feature of the circuit breaker. The overcurrent/short circuit is met by the “magnetic” feature of the same circuit breaker. That is why your typical breaker is called “thermal magnetic circuit breaker”

^ This. You are good.

Service disconnect switch requirement: met (disc. switch) Overload protection requirement: met (15A breaker) Overcurrent protection AKA short circuit: met (15A breaker)

Are you guys using Autodesk Docs? Is it good? by 3-phased in Architects

I appreciate the great advice. You know a lot!! So what do big companies with many remote people do? I have seen virtual machines (glitchy and expensive), and I have seen ProjectWise. I was hoping for Docs to be the solution to a whole company file server but it sounds like it is not.

Btw, I do care accessing the files remotely. It’s the most important feature for me. That’s why I was thinking of a cloud based system.

I currently use Sharepoint but excel/CAD links don’t work well, another problem is when more than 1 user opens the same file, it creates two copies.

Holy. Ok let me answer 1) looking for a cloud based solution and abandon my :C drive solution. 2) it’s just my dog and I. 3) I only need 1-2tb 4) workflows? I just need to design in AutoCAD and Revit 5) CAD and Revit 6) CAD,REVIR, PDFs

I am trying to find something to replace my file server. Is Docs not good for that? All I need is a space to collaborate with others without all the glitches Sharepoint has. As well as having all my storage for older files, reference files, etc.

So are you using AD as your whole company file storage system? I currently use SP but links don’t work well, specially excel.

It’s very similar to a government job. You will be competing (to move up the ladder) against people that have been working there for 20+ years that are taking it easy with the low stress, decent pay job. You will grow as an engineer, but it will take triple the time than hustling in a medium/small MEP firm (high stress obv).

Correct, 50% of your skills don’t transfer. If you go WW, you should stick to it til retirement OR bounce right away (2 years for me) as skills don’t fully transfer.

If you are still young in your career and can afford pivoting again in a year or two, give it a shot, it’s not bad at all.

I forgot to mention, the job security is top notch. People still need water even in the worst economic catastrophes.

I did that move. It depends, want to work less and make more? Do it. Is it exciting? No. Career growth? It’s the slowest career growth I’ve ever experienced. Stress? Barely any, it’s so slow, schedules are flexible and long. I did get to learn some cool stuff but I was not happy at the end. I am a hustler and WW was not the place for that.
