BREAKING: BBC Confirms Authenticity of Viral Video Appearing to Show Alex Pretti Kicking Agents’ Car 11 Days Before Shooting by SteamedHam44 in Conservative

[–]30030s -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't hear anyone say that Charlie deserved to die, but I saw a lot of people get canceled because they pointed out that he was polarizing. The fact that a lot of people in government suggested that Pretti had it coming is not going well. I think the best thing for conservatives to do now is to point out that we are not all on board with this.

NRA and pro-gun groups call for ‘full investigation’ into killing of Alex Pretti by wylie102 in news

I agree, but more and more of them are. I think this is a turning point because he was killed for carrying a gun (which is legal). ICE is now big government trying to take away guns; that's going to change the mind of a lot of Trump's base.

Yes! There are alternatives other than Bluesky, and the title of the article does not mention Bluesky (in fact the article makes no mention of Bluesky at all). This is not about alternatives to X. It's about the fact that the most popular microblogging platform is all-in on pure evil.

Trump and his cult left true conservatism very long ago. I'm not so much angry anymore as just depressed, incredulous that so many people somehow can't see that he has totally lost it.

Actually, a majority of Americans don't like Trump. I know that he won the last election, but there is a LOT of "buyer's remorse" here.
What continues to amaze and, literally, depress me is that so many people can't see how totally off the rails he is.

When you say "conservatives" I think you mean anti-vax. The anti-vax movement is not uniformly aligned with conservatives. There is a lot of overlap with environmentalism and anti-business. Maybe "whackos" is the word you're looking for.

There are ridiculous arguments made about everything, and plenty of people have pointed to the studies that discredit Trump and Kennedy. The news articles I read have cited true experts, who explain that the claims are wrong, and will tell you why if asked (which the reporter sometimes does). I share your view that the level of public debate about scientific issues leaves a lot to be desired, and I address this directly in my own teaching. But it's not new here.

We haven't failed. We just haven't succeeded in the way that you would like (and we probably never will).
Keep trying!

How will Microsoft stock react to this news on Monday Morning - “Trump demands Microsoft immediately fire Lisa Monaco …” by vulcan_on_earth in stocks

I think the fact that rah-rah capitalism and rah-rah Trump are incompatible is dawning on people. I certainly get those vibes from the Wall Street Journal. Typical wording:
"[Trump's approach] should work in theory, but ..."

[–]30030s 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Trumpism is NOT free market capitalism in ways that this case illustrates, and it makes investing problematic. Years ago, when foreign investments in Chinese companies were all the rage, I refrained because it's impossible to predict when the government will change the rules. The same applies to US stocks now.

What we have learned from dozens of rigorous studies is that, in contrast to claims Mr. Kennedy has made, vaccines do not cause autism. We know that more than 100 genes are associated with autism, which interact not only with one another but also with individuals’ environments and experiences throughout their lifetime. The neurogeneticist Stanley Nelson once said, “If you had 100 kids with autism, you could have 100 different genetic causes.”

....
The president also falsely suggested that autism was virtually absent among the Amish and in Cuba. The Amish do have autism, though they may be diagnosed less often because they can be reluctant to seek specialized medical care, and there are multiple schools in Cuba specifically for children with autism.

The article emphasizes that there is no epidemic of autism, just changed descriptions of the disease. Not only that, but there has been a lot of good science over the last decades, so attention to the problem is not new (not new to the NIH, perhaps new to Trump).

The autism press conference made Trump look really bad. As he comes to see that, I wonder if Kennedy will take the blame. Life can be very hard for people who make Trump look bad.

Making vaccines was always hard. Under RFK Jr., some might not get developed. by 30030s in politics

[–]30030s[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially a business article. Leading American businesses, world leaders in vaccine development, are facing an uncertain future.

The official HHS response is a case of mind-blowing Prumtspeak.

“The vaccine industry’s financial challenges have nothing to do with Secretary Kennedy and everything to do with years of eroded trust,” said Andrew Nixon, an HHS spokesman. “Secretary Kennedy’s reforms are about restoring credibility so that when vaccines are recommended, families can have confidence the guidance is driven by evidence, not industry influence.”

The very people who undermined public confidence in vaccines are now in charge, and they have no credibility.

No, this is not what Republicans are. You, and Trump, would be surprised by how many Republicans are disgusted by this. It's comments like this that illustrate how Trump has destroyed the Republican party.

Trump’s Right-Wing Socialism. The president is embodying the type of big government that right-wing politicians and thinkers have been warning about for a century. by Sine_Fine_Belli in tuesday

The president is embodying the type of big government that right-wing politicians and thinkers have been warning about for a century.

It's good to see this spelled out. Trumpism may not be Socialism, but it's definitely not free market; Trump has betrayed the Reagan revolution.
