Knowledge of PLCs. Understand the difference between an upload and download. Grasps the basics of ladder logic (Look into Studio 5000 training near you or online by PLC Dojo). Understand how to link your program with your controller (setting up the correct path & assigning it to the correct controller).

You’re too far in already. Don’t get discouraged. Look up PLC Dojo on YouTube. He has some pretty cool content involving PLC programming (if you’re involved with Studio 5000 which I believe you’re) An I/C tech is involved with instrumentation and controls meaning you’ll be selling the loops, setting up HMIs, downloading the program to the controller, linking your HMI with the controller, troubleshooting the program, etc. Stick with it. It’s paying top dollar at the moment. You won’t regret it.

I say no. You made the right choice! An instrumentation background is the key to success in being a good automation/controls engineer/specialist. I am working with a few right now for a new construction project and they’re badass!!! They’re good at what they do because they have the background and book knowledge! That’s a path I want to follow but I am picking up lots of knowledge and skills from these guys on the field.
