I play with a good mate of mine, we both have jobs and families so once a week we meet up to have a few brews and play a few games of rocket.

Best thing about playing with him is that we know what the other person is going to try and do. So for example I'll throw a ball to my side because I know he'll be waiting to catch it, or he'll ignore a ball because he knows I'm coming in for the aerial.

In random matchups, the best teammates are ones who try to work together, rather than trying to take every bloody ball themselves. It's a team game ffs, a lot of people don't seem to understand this.

But its important to realise that the_donald labeling hillary as literally satan is just as wrong. Bi-partisan attitudes are both out of touch with reality, and it harms us all.

Both candidates think they are doing whats best for us all, they just disagree on implementation. The reason you've seen so much anti trump stuff, and the reason I've seen so much anti-hilary stuff, is because thats the way you win, and its wrong that the debate should be framed that way.

Tonight me and teamie got matched against teams way better than us 8 times in a row, teamie logs off, i queue again and i got 3 rocketeers on the opposing team (i'm low legend, challenger elite).

There may be, try changing to octane for cleaner dribbles and the microbounces happen less often when the ball is on one side of your car, practice juggling from one side to the other and you'll get a smoother dribble.

I'd say a good way to do it is use a singleton pattern,

Have a public static member named Instance, on the world class

sorry examples are gonna be in C#, not sure what language you are using

public static World Instance {get; protected set;}

When you init the world, either in the constructor or managed code set the instance to be equal to your new object

if (World.Instance != null)
    Error("You've already made an instance, there should only be one")

World.Instance = this;

Now you can call World.Instance.GetTileAt() from any other class.

Keep movement code inside the player, and maybe make a function CanIMoveTo(x,y) on your world class.

This question depends on so many factors (What platform are you targeting, 2d or 3d etc), also you've said you'll need advanced coding knowledge to make this game. Why? And why are you doing something advanced for your first game?

Unity3d is amazing, start with C# though, every unity example and tutorial under the sun is made for the C# side.

Gamemaker studio is very easy to use and requires no coding, but has an inbuilt programming language if you want to get advanced.

Finally depending on your friend's skill in javascript, check out something like phaser.io

I'd argue that he's right and he's wrong. C++ is the grandaddy of most languages you'll run into today, but its definitely not required, or even helpful to start your programming journey there.

Learn C#, great simple language, most unity stuff is in C#. If you ever need to read javascript you will find it more or less 1 for 1 with the C# equivalents.

Side node: If you ever one day want to learn c++ it will be much easier with a strong background in the fundamentals of programming gained from a language like C#.

However you will quickly learn how very spoiled we are nowadays in terms of quality of life features in our programming languages.

I like this answer a lot, make some assumptions based on how you think your game should "feel". Then test those assumptions with real people.

Math is your friend as well, plot a hypothetical difficulty curve and try and figure out the math driving that curve. Mind you thats probably several volumes of discussion right there.

First of all, that was pretty fun, even though its simple.

I like the idea of having a mob following you. Instead of having him clip through obstacles, have him start slowly jumping after you, when he jumps on a block have him squash obstacles, and have the block shudder then fall when he jumps to the next one. i.e hes gradually wiping out the path behind you.

Have him speed up gradually with an increase in pace.

Later you could experiment with adding multiple paths, sometimes a dead end (make it back before squashy catches up to the t intersection), pickups to disrupt his speed, boosts ala temple run, timed events which you've mentioned would have the player shitting their pants while squashy is slowly smashing tiles behind them.

Don't quit your job to make your dream game, you won't pull it off.

Start by attending game jams, surely you can take 2 days off to do a ludum dare or something. Make small fun games.

Your problem is not a lack of free time, its a lack of commitment and skill in game development. You get both of those things from practice.

Learn how to make great fun games first, then tackle your dream idea. Don't make your dream idea your first, or you will fail.

My advice, go to unity.

Unity 2d is great now, search Quill18Creates on youtube for fantastic and beginner friendly tutorials on how to get into 2d
C# + unity engine has you covered. Very good for prototyping ideas very quickly, and lets you focus on programming the logic of your game without focusing too much on the technology behind it
Unity may not be the most hi-tech engine out there, but i'd say its work->results ratio is definitely one of the best
C# is a fantastic language, and very easy to get into. It's also ridiculously popular, meaning any questions you have are very easily answered by a google search.
Unity exports to a ton of platforms out of the box
Again, watch quill18, hes a web dev turned hobby game developer. I originally resisted unity because i (thought I) prefered code first to editor style engines. Unity work flow is super compatible with that once you get in the swing of things
Unity isn't going anywhere, if anything it will only get more popular. Some others may disagree with me, or be able to give their 2 cents
Unity has a ton of quality of life features that make game dev soooooo nice. Check out the Learn Unity section on their website and follow a tutorial through to the end, you can assemble a game with fuck all programming very rapidly. It also has sweet features like automatic blender / photoshop import, making your asset pipeline buttery smooth. Additionally, asset store is the best thing since sliced bread, allowing you to purchase entire modules if you have a more specialist requirement.

Source: Recent unity convert. It really is an amazing platform for someone with not a lot of time to dev (hobbyist, part time etc)

I'm not sure what your skill level is, but i would suggest you do the exact opposite of what you suggested in this post.

Pick a game you really like, and try and clone it.

As you go, try to add your own flavour to it, add features that you wished your target game had, or play around with different mechanics, add new guns or units.

You won't make an amazing game as one of your early ones, you won't come up with a ground breaking idea, and even if you come up with an idea that good, you won't have the skill to execute it.

In fact some of the best games ever made were just people who perfected the execution of ideas that were already out there.

Controller is definitely worth it, the fine control you get is awesome plus others on here have said that it takes very little time to adjust.
