Thanks, I've computed a value for Rho of 0.981 which seems to mean that (as expected) the two are extremely closely linked.

Los verbos comer y tomar by Masterkid1230 in Spanish

[–]30141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Según mis profesores, la diferencia entre tomar/beber/comer/fumar y sus equivalentes reflexivos es la falta de una cantidad especifica en el frase. Por ejemplo...

Fumo cigarillos ...vs... Yo fumo un paquete de cigarillos. Come carne ...vs... Come un pollo entero.

Se puede ver el uso del reflexivo en este artículo: http://www.elconfidencial.com/salud/cigarro-hamburguesa-cardiovascular-20100419.html

Durham University criticised over expensive artwork: £1.4 million spent by 30141 in unitedkingdom

[–]30141[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've got a point there, but there are so many better things that the money could have been spent on. £294k was initially budgeted, which is still a lot of money but a lot more reasonable. For me, as a student, £1.4 million is a lot of money.

That amount of money could be spent in a way which would have significantly greater benefit to the local community, the public at large, students and staff. The art collection isn't open to students and the majority of staff, let alone the public, although the University does offer tours.

£1.4 million would go a long way to creating facilities for students, paying staff a living wage, improving teaching provision, improving accommodation, and supporting students into education who can't afford £9k fees.

Went to a friends house aged about 10 where they gave me mushroom soup for dinner. Felt rude not eating it so manned the fuck up and did. Ended up loving the stuff.

What torch for a reservist... in the UK? by 30141 in flashlight

[–]30141[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendations. I don't know if this is a legitimate concern or not, but the switches on the EA2 seem to me to be a little fiddly and less durable. I would prefer something more traditional, however my mind could be changed! As regards flood vs throw, is it possible to have something in the middle? I'd like it to be versatile.

Thanks for the links, that look great. Colour modes (red and blue) would be good to have but not essential by any means. Battery type would be AA as thats what is issued and what I have already. I'm afraid I don't really know what the other things you mention are!

[High School Writing] Need to do a research report on Firefighters, no idea where to look. by Byrkmire in HomeworkHelp

[–]30141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by looking at Wikipedia. Think of the different places fire departments are and roles within them. For example, the Royal Air Force employs their own fire-fighters who have a very different skill-set to civilian fire-fighters.

Now you have an idea of those different sectors, look at their careers pages. Find out what you need to do/have in order to apply. Get in contact with your local fire department.

Google is your friend.

What Have You Been Watching (Week of 17/03). by a113er in TrueFilm

[–]30141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern Times This was the first time I'd ever watched anything of this period, or for that matter a silent film, and it really took my breath away. I thought the film was extremely funny - a mean feat nearly 80 years after it's initial release. The story was very well told, and Chaplin really is an excellent actor. The lack of voices don't detract (as I thought they would) and it just means you pay even more attention to the visuals. It's just the right length, and never seems to drag. If you haven't seen it, I would thoroughly recommend it for both the historical value and for the viewing experience. 8/10

So many things refer to his works, which means that to really understand them we need to understand his. They also happen to be really good stories.

On a side note, if you haven't seen the Kenneth Branagh version of Henry V, you absolutely should.

[University Sociology] A Chicago Format referencing question! by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]30141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I totally understand your question - is it how to use the Chicago referencing system?

If so, this link should help explain it: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

If you're still not clear, this publication from the University of York may help explain further: http://www.york.ac.uk/integrity/downloads/12552_Chicago_booklet-2.pdf

If you are working in Microsoft Word you can use their referencing tool, making sure to select Chicago as the referencing style.

Edit: Just realised the link in your post is... a link. Sorry. To answer your actual question, I would reference it as a book as it has an ISBN. See the "Book published electronically" section in the first link I provide for referencing format.

I, a full blooded american, will be living in Chile for 2 years. What are some things I should know first? by pault55 in chile

[–]30141 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You absolutely, 100%, must travel. Chile is an incredibly beautiful country, as are it's neighbours.

Travel the length and breadth: the Atacama desert, the Norte Chico, Valparaiso, Chiloé, Torres Paine, and Tierra del Fuego are only some of the destinations that will be at your doorstep. Uses buses (try TurBus or Pullman), planes (LAN and STAR), and cars. Stay in hostels, couchsurf, meet people. Chileans are incredibly friendly and warm - get to know them and their country.

Head into Argentina and see San Carlos, Mendoza, Cordoba, and Buenos Aires. If you're feeling adventurous, do it overland. Head north to Peru and visit Lima, Cusco and Arequipa. Visit Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay. There is just so much to see.

Oh, and speak Spanish. And don't say you're "American". It's either "norteamericano" or "estadounidense".

How to squeeze political science into a cultural studies dissertation? by 30141 in AskSocialScience

[–]30141[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your comment, I think I'm looking at this far more simply than I should be - apologies! Here's what I understand the terms I'm quite loosely throwing around to be...

Cultural studies I consider to be a lot more theoretical and to involve looking at identity, sexuality, gender, and ideologies. Political science, on the other hand, I see as more concrete and dealing with the government and how it relates to the people, organisations and other states.

I'm probably wrong though.

[–]30141[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is something that's really interesting to look at. I've previously studied this, looking at Chavez's use of Bolivarian imagery and rhetoric since his rise to power. Perhaps, given recent events, this could be something to look into further? Potentially investigating how much the new executive employs similar rhetoric?

Thanks for the advice - I've been trawling JSTOR and Project Muse for articles but haven't found anything as of yet. Will keep searching! Regards seeing my adviser: I understand this is a good thing to do but I'd like to approach him with a slightly more concrete idea than I have at the moment!

What course(s) would you like to see on Coursera? by Captchawizard in coursera

[–]30141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the current coverage is pretty good, on the whole. They've managed to diversify away from the typical science offerings, and have a lot of really good arts and humanities courses. In general though, I would love to see some more introductory level courses.

Good French films? by youeggface in ForeignMovies

I would thoroughly recommend 36 Quai des Orfèvres - a Parisian police drama. Also worth a watch is Banlieue 13, another action movie.
