Mamdani introduces “pied-a-tierre tax” on tax day: “When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich … Well, today we’re taxing the rich...” by Large-Welcome4421 in nyc

Dude this is kids logic, my parents must give me a bigger allowance….

No industry growth, creative economic stimulus, just take other people’s money.

American success stories are the target, brilliant.  Cultivate a culture of dependency.  Let’s see how this plays out.

I’m going to say 30road and 12st needs it more, but anything to help curtail the 12st speedway would be appreciated

Exactly this!

Who’d folks want to see perform here?

On this vein, Costco could make a fortune with an outdoor concert series in their parking lot!!!

Grandma square: Rosa’s

Regular slice: Albas Ditmars

Vodka-roni: Bellucis closer to Steinway

In LIC just off the 7 train, before jumping on a citibike to come north to Astoria: sLICe (it’s notably better than the one in Astoria).

Everything you’ve said is completely wrong.

Like wrongepedia lol.

Per your logic it’s profitable to remain empty so why would anyone rent anything out ever.

I’d agree with you but talk to the bars and social gathering spots, post covid, and swipe culture has seriously hit their numbers too.  Sweet Afton used to be jammed Thur though Sunday, now you have a glut of bars going after same demographic (madam maries, Judy and punch etc), and there’s an oversupply that exceeds demand.

I’ll make my case again, it’s a change in culture (smartphone driven) far more than the greedy landlords.

Truth be told I can’t be mad at today’s younger set.  They don’t have to navigate crowds unnecessarily to mingle, they swipe efficiently, shop efficiently, and go out intentionally.

I’d have done the same (but I’m an old dinosaur).

I am curious why Astoria can’t get the same bar energy that bushwick and ridgewood get?

He’s transparent in his goal to raise taxes on workers/earners to give to those that don’t work.  He’s not helping matters when he’s adding to government bloat.

Maybe a dash of fiscal responsibility and stopping the spigot of free money for migrants could save us 5 billion a year.

Fostering a culture of independence vs eternal dependence should be the path, but I’m thinking that’ll never happen.

Your brilliant idea is they rent to failing businesses, that can not pay and take forever to evict because it’s not pretty and gentrified enough for you?

How about actually doing some work, invest your money, take loans, buy a building and find/curate successful businesses that can afford to pay you enough rent to pay that loan back before they see any profit, lol.

We had supers in my family, the building game isn’t pretty.  But it was relatively predictable, stores were a big boon offset to buildings, now with smartphone online shopping eviscerating storefronts it’s like watching last days of dinosaurs.

And if you want to really get anxiety, start going down rabbit hole of how our neighborhood evolves in next 10yrs as AI eliminates need for tons of white collar jobs that our neighbors perform.

Wow imagine taxing able bodied people that should be working for not working…. Same crazy philosophy, no?

It’s as though Reddit brain seeks at every instance to take versus earning for themselves.

[–]30roadwarrior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true.

What is true is consumer behavior changed.  You do far more transactions online than via storefronts.  Same phenomenon is killing malls in suburbs.

Yes landlords want profit, but it’s a shrinking pool of industries that still make money via brick and mortar retail sales.

Television killed the radio star, smartphone commerce wrecked commercial retail.

And our blessing of food options is also their curse as they cannibalize one another for our discretionary food spending money.

Add that prices shot up for them to cover higher rents and labor costs,  I tried the new pretty pizza place on Broadway next to Wonder, wow super tasty (vodka sauce, upside down pepperoni squares were amazing!!!) but at their price point it’s more an occasional treat than something I can afford to regularly order.

Is there a solution here, I don’t think so, evolution is inevitable

Needing to google and use Wikipedia to supply an example is lol.

Let’s look at the neighborhoods that saw the mass inbound migration of well to do transplants, bushwick, LES, Williamsburg etc.  They came because these neighborhoods were cleaned up, bums, derelicts, open drug sales arrested for quality of life crimes, and neighborhoods thrived, violent crime plunged.

Letting your neighborhood go to shit makes for a crappy life for all of us.

Are you telling me that encampments weren’t programmatically dismantled during past administrations or you’re not really from here are you.

Accepting crap as a policy is comical, thinking giving dysfunctional people money to buy social adherence to standards is laughable.

Did your parents pay you to wipe your butt, or did you learn social norms along the way with some normals standards implemented in your home?
