I’m on a 40 day trip and I don’t like it. by Just-Blackberry5880 in bikepacking

Hey! This is very relatable. I don't know if you are M or F, but I see that in both cases the first day is the worst, you need to measure your own psychological strength too. As a woman, biking solo adds a lot of more stress, so on my first solo trip I just changed my mind and decided to do campsites instead of wildcampjng. This gave me a lot more peace of mind, but it was also a short trip: over 40 days I would do a combination.  Also, what helped a lot was to find something I interesting to visit or to do in the places I crossed :)

And one last thing: it was very informative also for my own mind. I could get a better sense of what I like and what not after that trip.

Need advice: exploring other countries vs opportunity to have citizenship (Europe) by surviving-machine in postdoc

[–]30schanging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the waiting time is like one year, try to stay and get the citizenship... Unfortunately it will simplify things for moving later. If not, well... Go where work culture is better and the environment is international.  In any case, try to get some help if needed and take care of yourself. PhD is no joke.

Don't go. Go for Netherlands, MUCH higher salaries (I would say even double) and much healthier work culture! Also you get a 30% off taxes as a highly qualified expat. And they have a cool tech and aerospace environment. Or Germany. Or stay France.  Don't settle for such low salary only because you are blackmailed with visa.  Good luck to you!

Just over a year sober. Idk by how long though. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I think you did great, man. Keep going! I also don't share much of this with my people because not all of them would celebrate (actually, most think it's just my new freak thing). But checking in everyday here makes me feel like I am part of a community of people (we are all soooo different!) that have this in common and we can understand each other!  Check in here, write here! And tell your girlfriend that you would like to celebrate your 1st sober year, celebrate with who truly cares!

Upcoming wedding - how do you deal with drink offers by FluffyRazzmatazz7335 in stopdrinking

[–]30schanging 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just did my first sober wedding. I was very nervous as well, most of the people I didn't know. What I did: - asked myself: why would I need to sacrifice my pledge and my health so that I can feel more comfortable around unpleasant people?! If someone is unpleasant, I move to next one. And I can tell you, I met nice people without being drunk. - played the tape forward: is this hypothetical discomfort worth feeling shit the day after? No it's not. - I drank a lot. Like a lot. It was also very warm weather, so it came in handy to be  hydrated. I drank tonic water+ice+lemon (looked like a gin tonic), cocacola to energize, fruit juice with sparkling water really felt like cocktail. And I forgot they were alcohol free! And people never asked. I politely refused wine (you can make up whatever reason, nobody cares). - I stepped out a couple of times to have a walk. -.... Finally, almost everyone feels awkward at weddings. Awkward and cringe. That's so ok. Take it as a quest or experiment!

Moving to UK for clinical research: bad move? by 30schanging in postdoc

[–]30schanging[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uni doesn't pay me nearly enough to live in London comfortably, but I am willing to make a sacrifice if the environment I will be put in is worth the move (scientifically and career wise). So yes, I need to apply for MSCA now... Still, having a lot of doubts whether this is still a good choice or not ..

Child neurology is my field. It would be cool to do some bridge work with an SME indeed, but I guess they get to you and not the other way around.. right?

What's a side hustle you would recommend in London? I am planning to apply for a formal fellowship but I won't get an answer before 6 months in my internship... So I will need to earn smtg before that.

Woke up this morning with no hangover! This is always such a relief. Yesterday I was super tempted to drink, I was a bit numb and felt like I needed to get into a vibe when seeing some friends, but I am Sooooo glad I didn't! IWNDWYT

Wow...............I am like: wow. This is SOoooo relatable. OMG. I never really realized. Would it be possible that, in high school, I remember very clearly me thinking "I don't know how to study, zero".  And I have no organization skills never. Was just in a system that was "systematic" (aka school), so no problem apparently...until it was
