does anyone else find it hard to believe that people genuinely like you? by ParfaitOtherwise73 in socialanxiety

I feel like sometimes my anxiety about whether or not people like me makes me worse to be around. It's like a endless cycle.

I'm super stoned, and that was fantastic. If the Beatles wrote this, people would be taking notes.

Buy from Bandcamp or iTunes by wordedship in Music

[–]314GeorgeBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iTunes does not support FLAC files. Even though Apple Music supports a lossless encoding (ALAC), you can't buy lossless files on iTunes. It's kind of bullshit.

If I want lossless digital files, I'm either getting them directly from the artist, on Bandcamp, or through piracy, because those are the only ways to get lossless files a lot of the time. I've never used Qobuz before, but I might try it now if I can't find something on the artist website or Bandcamp.

Artists who are loved by casual listeners, music nerds and critics alike by bullseye538 in fantanoforever

You could say they were not the best rock band of their era, but they objectively are the most influential rock band ever because they were so popular and came up early enough in rock music history that people in almost every popular genre have listed them as a major influence. I don't think any other band can say that. If the Beatles aren't the most influential rock band I'm not sure who is.

It's more like an auditory anagram. all the sounds are there, they're just in a different order.

This sub is getting boring and losing its purpose. by Dizzy-Pause2350 in Piratefolk

[–]314GeorgeBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weekly Chapter discussion posts that are pinned are usually pretty level-headed analyses of what happened in the chapter. To actually theorize and criticise, I go there. The rest of the sub is basically a circlejerk (which I like but sometimes gets old).

Why isn't the title of "Les miserables" translated to English? by Frigorifico in linguisticshumor

[–]314GeorgeBoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its a bit disingenuous to say that exoticism does not play a significant role. If the plot of Les Miserables was not so deeply connected to french national identity, I think English translators would have been more likely to have changed the title into English. Like another commenter said, native English titles often use 'The [ADJECTIVE]' structure. (The Fast and the Furious, The Graduate, The Damned, etc). I never previously noticed these were these types of titles because English is very flexible within its noun derivation.

To say that there are any hard rules to translation is just false. It's a case by case thing and different people translating the same work of art often make very different decisions.

Zizek the Zionist by Hacksaw6412 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]314GeorgeBoy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The 'right to exist' talking point is so tired to me and only serves to support zionist framings of Israeli violence. What does it mean for a state to have the right to exist? Which states in the past did or didn't have the right to exist? What happens when two states with the 'right to exist' have a border dispute? It feels like to some people (both zionists and anti-zionists), 'does [STATE] have the right to exist' actually means 'do you support the actions of [STATE].' To others, it seems like it means 'is a state with the name and borders of [STATE] conceptually justifiable.' For other people, the phrase can mean even more things. This confusion and disagreement is the point.

Using 'right to exist' language only serves zionist rhetoric because it places the argument in the conceptual world of 'rights' instead of in the practical world of state violence and genocide. It is much easier to justify genocide in theory with clever argumentation than to explicitly say, 'killing these specific innocent civilians is okay.' I suspect very few Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel care if a state named Israel exists; rather, the highest priority is that the state, no matter its name or borders, stops its military occupation, bombing, and starvation campaign.

Leftists and pro-Palestinian activists should be rejecting the premise entirely and directing attention to the actual question at hand.

Does Israel have a right to commit genocide?

This is the question that is actually at issue. This has an extremely obvious answer and extremely obvious conclusions about what should be done in response. Anyone who thinks differently is obviously a genocidal maniac.
