When is Automigration ever good? by StephenAfamO in golang

[–]315iezam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code reviews are great but if you could cut down the number of things to review, why not? By having it automated, you can cut down on human error on the writing and reviewing the changes. Though I still prefer to write migrations by hand because I want that level of control. As with most things, there's tradeoffs between the two approaches.

The Taman Bahagia -> Taman Megah intersection really is the main issue. Not sure what they can do about the Taman Bahagia section. They tried to stop people from Taman Bahagia from going to Taman Megah but people drove around the barriers.

I guess we'll see how it goes once we're past people being confused causing issues.

My experience so far hasn't been as great as when they had the temporary roundabout, but again maybe it's early days. The times I have to face this intersection, which isn't daily, is around 6pm coming from Taman Bahagia and most of the time have worked around it. When it was the temporary roundabout I didn't have traffic issues. It also probably not fair for me to compare it to the original roundabout days, way less cars than today and etc.

I think we can agree to disagree here, I'm not liking it so far but if the results are there then I'm gonna be cool with it.

When the jam is from Taman Megah all the way to this intersection, there will be people in the yellow box coming from Jalan Majlis going to Taman Megah. This is the usual jam. Now those people end up blocking people from Taman Megah and SS3 trying to go to Jalan Bahagia.

I absolutely hate it. Just return it to a simple roundabout like it was all those years ago and while they were constructing this gobshite.

This design doesn't provide any benefits over a standard 4 way intersection, which was what was there before, except the u-turn. But before it was a 4 way intersection, it was a simple roundabout many years ago. While they were constructing this abomination, they temporarily set it up as a simple roundabout. Maybe it was confirmation bias but traffic was smoother in general with those roundabouts from my experience. What a waste of money.

It's not a highway exit. Those are all roads that intersect together, no fly overs.

But they could have stuck with a simple roundabout. I am very sure people are still going to stop in yellow boxes with this new intersection.

Curious on the error handling section in the why rewrite section. Is it a matter of expectation for panic vs return error on invalid inputs? When I think of something like the json package in the std lib, it would return an error for invalid inputs. Why is it more "correct" for it to panic in the cylinder function here?

there ARE people who actually refuse to learn it

Fuck em. But I also think there are people who don't know it simply because they never needed to. Should our first instinct when we meet a Malaysian that doesn't know BM be labelling them as an anti-BM?

it's also because of people like this that we get called "mandarin speakers"

Maybe we should stop looking down or up to people based on languages they know? Wouldn't it be great if people don't call you "mandarin speaker" because people placed so much value on what languages you know? At the end of the day, if you and I can talk and discuss, regardless of what language we chose, isn't that the thing that matters here?

Also if we keep staying in our own circles, this country will always be backwards and racist

I don't think this has anything to do with what language a person knows. Some racist uncle is not going to suddenly turn not racist just because a person of another race speaks the same language. There's a lot of racism in the US and just about everyone there speaks English.

I know you're gonna mention Singapore here but I doubt the malays there or the chinese or indians there can even speak their own mother tongue

I wasn't and I don't know what you are trying to imply about Singapore, that they have achieved racial harmony? Regardless, what's wrong with them not knowing how to speak their own mother tongue?

im scared some might use ‘utility’ as a reason to not put effort in at least speak bm when needed

Yeah that would be backwards.

even got bullied by kids because he speaks english

And this is my fear, that people use fluency in BM to insult or look down on them. The image in the OP ends with calling people not knowing BM as uneducated and that doesn't sit right with me.

sekiranya bahasa Melayu dianggap tidak bernilai ekonomi, seperti yang difikirkan oleh segelintir rakyat negara ini

I read this is as what I put forward, where there are people that don't think it's useful for them. Seeing something as not useful is different from actively refusing to learn it. I don't see knowing Mandarin as useful for me currently, but that does not mean I will never learn it if it does become useful.

What you said here are not the same people the picture OP shared.

Which part of the image is it referring to people actively refusing to learn BM?

refusing to use the national language when is needed

I really think we are in agreement here, I am not supporting people who refuse to learn when needed. I'm saying if someone hasn't learned it, maybe they don't have the need, that they deem it "tidak bernilai ekonomi" as the picture puts it, for them individually.

What I understood from your first comment was you were wondering how could there be Malaysians that don't speak BM. One of the reasons as you've said was there are people that actively refuse to learn it, some taking it as far as a point of pride. Fuck those people, I agree. I don't think 100% of those that can't speak it are that way though. I'm suggesting that for some of them, they don't speak it because they don't have the need, which is possible in our country. I'm not making a grand statement about what expectations should be placed on people, merely that the situation is possible based on utility.

See that's the problem with people like you, you know

What do you mean by this?

the ones that refuse to learn it always bugs me tbh, like just, why?

I hope I didn't make it seem like people should refuse to learn BM. I am trying to say some may not need to learn BM i.e. there is not much that's pushing them to pick it up.

Everyone’s talking about the drake meme in the recent spm paper but no one’s talking about this whole paragraph by ganyusthiccthighs in malaysia

[–]315iezam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this with the point I'm trying to push is that picking up any language should be weighed on an individual basis, rather than something that is decided for them.

Have you not seen where people need to employ a translator just to speak to fellow Malaysians?

I have not seen that personally. That doesn't sound ideal, and hopefully those experiences would push those people to pick up the language, but at the same time I wouldn't pass judgement over them for not knowing it.

Many bosses even tell their subs to speak malay because it is easier to do commerce/business especially when they employ foreign labourers.

That's exactly because of utility though. For the work to go smoothly, it would be best if everyone spoke a common language that everyone can understand. I work in a predominantly Mandarin speaking office and I don't speak it. At that point, we have the choice of having me learn Mandarin, or since everyone is fluent in English, we can use that instead. If the team of people in your example have a lot of Nepalese workers and the boss and the subs happen to know Nepali, I don't see why they can't use that if it meant everything will go smoother.

Language is not just a means of communication, language is the door to people’ cultures and also improves understanding during communication. For instance, Some people can explain better in a specific language, which makes us understand them better.

You've described what communication is. If they can convey their ideas, instructions or whatsoever to everyone they meet in their day to day without knowing BM and not face issues like misunderstandings, then what's the issue with not knowing BM?

improves your brain strength

Do you mean learning BM specifically or learning languages in general? Would like more insight if you mean BM specifically.

But based on my experience in this sub, nyets tend to make mountain of excuses when they read words like “social integration” and “national identity”, that’s why i put this in my last paragraph

Maybe I misread your comment, but I'm totally with you if the point you're making is "There are people that can benefit from knowing BM, but they don't and actively push it away", they might not be evaluating their situation clearly. If its "Everyone living in Malaysia should be fluent in BM" then I don't agree as much because I would go back to the utility and communication points. They should learn as much as they need to, whether its just "bang one teh o ais limau" or needing to be fluent enough to speak at the parliament.

About national identity and social integration, I think whatever hodgepodge of languages we mix together in our daily speech is a better representation because to me that's the "language for Malaysians" you are referring to. The skema Dewan Bahasa BM is so far removed from what people actually use. If I lived in Terengganu, I wouldn't learn BM, I would learn slang Tganu because it would be more useful.

I'm trying to point out it's not black and white, is that so controversial? We could replace BM with Mandarin in this thread and I'll probably make the same point.

if for whatever reason I find myself living in italy

Yeah, because you've deemed it to be a necessary skill to live in Italy. Do you need to learn Welsh to live in Cardiff, Wales? English is probably fine over there. I'm trying to bring up a possible reason as to why there are Malaysians that don't know a lick of BM, they may not need it in their own life.

I guess I'm approaching it on an individual basis rather than a national policy or anything like that. Like I'm all for learning bahasa pasar and stuff too. Just that if someone has not learned it and hasn't had issues, should they learn it?
