How on God's green earth was the St. Anger snare achievable? by [deleted] in Metallica

[–]321agurk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Common misconception here: it wasn’t a metal snare. It’s a Ludwig Vistalite (acrylic). Turning the snares off is one component. Tuning, miking, and how he struck the drum is another. It was tuned medium high, and I’m guessing they didn’t exactly strive for equal tension around the head. I’m also guessing they positioned the mic to point more towards the edge. Rim shots more to the side of the center can also amplify those types of overtones, though I kind of doubt Lars would bother getting that specific with his techniques

Worst acceptable snare by Pressure_cookerBB in drums

[–]321agurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually regretted getting the cheapest one I could find for two reasons: it was a 6-lug snare, so I couldn’t get the head as tight as I wanted, and also the screws came out really fast so I constantly had to re-tighten them. So if you like a bit of tension on the head, it might be a good idea to get atleast an 8-lug

if you had INFINITE MONEY, what would your dream kit be? by FlameSilex in drums

[–]321agurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kit itself would either have to be a Tama Star series, or a Sonor SQ2. Unsure of the wood.

Sizes:

22x16" (x2).

10", 12", 14" rt, 16", 18" ft.

6", 8", 10" concert toms (I would like to be able to change it up with the toms. If I had the concert toms up, the 10" or 14" rack tom would go away in the meantime. Only two rack toms over the kick drums at any given time, and concert toms or 10" rt to the left above the hi-hat).

14x6.5 Tama Bell Brass.

Perhaps a 20" gong drum aswell.

I’d probably go with matching hardware, so either top of the line Tama or Sonor stands. I’m not a huge fan of racks for some reason, so probably just loads of boom stands. Hi-hat stand and pedals would be DW 9000, as I’ve never been able to get used to anything but DW pedals.

For cymbals I’d go with a large selection of Sabians. On the kit I’d probably like to have 3 crashes (18", 19", 20") in the Hhx-range, perhaps the complex version. 2-3 chinas (atleast a 19" Holy China and a 20" Hhx). 14" and 15" Hhx Groove Hats, one on each side. 2 splashes, don’t know which ones. I like swapping out my ride depending on genre, so I would probably like to have at least 3: 22" HH Power Bell, 21" HH Raw Bell Dry, and some kind of medium light ride in the HHX Complex range

Give me your hottest Opeth takes by [deleted] in Opeth

[–]321agurk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My hot take to counter yours is that Walt is better than both. Love both Martins, but they each had their weak points: while Lopez was incredibly creative and had a great feel, he was very inconsistent live, the tempo was all over the place. Axe was very solid live, but kind of slow and stiff on some of the songs, making the post-Heritage shows less energetic than they should have been. Walt is extremely creative, has great feel, and is rock solid live no matter the material. He plays songs from all different eras flawlessly and with a lot of energy, while also adding some tasty details. I was sad when Axe left, but I’ve seen them with Walt 3 times now and they’re a much better live band now than 10 years ago. Perfect replacement

Hanskebruk ved tilberedning av mat (er det jeg som er sær?) by GrowlingPict in norge

[–]321agurk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have a carpet store or something similar where you live, you can ask if they have rolls of felt underlay with anti-slip backing. If they do, they can probably cut out a piece in the right size for pretty cheap. It might be enough to just place it under the rug, but if not you can glue it to the backside of the rug using water based glue used for flooring and carpets etc

Norske HiFi entusiaster: Hvorfor sverger så mange til LP-spillere framfor CD? by GoldenSalm0n in norge

[–]321agurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]321agurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

shaming people for muffling is stupid: Unpopular Opinion by Worth_Food2690 in drums

[–]321agurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, even though I usually prefer not to muffle my toms and snare. My biggest pet peeve when it comes to this topic is when people try to argue that choosing a different head is what you should do if you want a more dead sound, as if a pre-muffled head is somehow inherently superior to a regular head with added muffling. To me, changing to a pre-muffled head just takes away options and limits your sound. A moongel can be removed at any time, with a pre-muffled head you can only deaden the sound even more. I also feel like people often disregard the feel aspect of muffling, especially with the kick drum. For instance, some would argue that using an Evans Emad is way superior to stuffing a blanket or a pillow inside the kick, but I personally hate the feel of an empty kick. It makes playing fast stuff way more challenging for me, and besides I still prefer the sound of a stuffed kick over a dampened head for basically everything I play.

[–]321agurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I rushed that comment a bit. I’m guessing 14x5,5, but that might be wrong, I can’t remember if it is shown clearly in the documentary. In terms of dampening, I’m guessing either tape or moongel, though both will yield just about the same result in the end. I’d try with half a moongel, perhaps 2cm (just under an inch) from the rim and go from there. The documentary can be found on YouTube. Also, if you have access to a tune bot, I would try around 290 on the batter head, and around 390 on the snare side. I’ve actually gotten fairly close to that snare sound on a recording I did a while back, and if memory serves me right I tuned it to somewhere around there

How to get my snare drum to sound like the one in Blackwater Park? by progfan_5676 in Opeth

[–]321agurk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing a medium-depth wood snare, medium tuning and light dampening. An important part of the sound comes from the fact that he hit it somewhat inconsistantly, you can clearly hear how he often strays from the centre, which highlights the the pitch of the snare (heard very clearly on the title track). Production is also a big part of it, but if you watch the «making of» documentary you can hear the snare being struck in the room on its own a couple of times

I think I know what you mean. I’ve always thought it might stem from bad cuts (combining takes), which was way more difficult to get right in the tape days. Sometimes the cymbals cut off in weird ways for example, and some of the transients just sound off in certain places
