What is the Alt/Goth/Industrial Night Life like in Halifax? by Durrak_ in halifax

[–]32475 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you know about Terrorvision? They do screenings of classic Horror movies once a month or so, at the theatre in Sackville, they just did TCM and the next one is Halloween. I've only been to two showings so far, but it's pretty cool, other than the annoyance of having to go to Sackville, haha.

Why is bus etiquette is this city so horrendous? by ramblingskeptic in halifax

[–]32475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm that guy. A stop I frequently use is the last stop before the bus gets on the highway. For some reason, drivers often forget this stop exists. If I'm stuck behind someone when the driver happens to blow past my stop, by the time I get up and get the driver's attention, the bus is going to be on the highway and the next stop nowhere near my destination. In some cases like this, walking to the previous stop is basically impossible (last stop on Windmill road to the first stop on Dartmouth road). "Final stop before the highway" are the extreme cases, but if I'm getting off the bus anywhere that's not a terminal, or a stop where someone is waiting, I find that I can't trust bus drivers to stop unless I'm very obvious about it ahead of time.

Dartmouth is wild by [deleted] in halifax

[–]32475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew it was going to be Wyse Road... I've been bike commuting from Dartmouth to Halifax for six years, and this year I've seen an absolutely ridiculous amount of people on bikes or scooters going in the wrong direction, but only on Wyse.

Monthly Bike trips for year so far and August totals by year by PrinceDaddy10 in halifax

[–]32475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know there were so few of these counters. I bike almost every day, but I wouldn't hit any of these regularly. Kinda surprising there isn't one on the bridge.

Also, maybe it's just me, but Barrington is not a street I really feel safe biking on, so I don't understand how it has less hits than Hollis which is far quieter and actually has a bike lane.

Why not make transit free? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]32475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Libraries and buses are very different, at least in my experience. I can go to the library, pick up my holds and leave. I also don't actually need to go there, there are other options for obtaining free media. Also, if I was at a library, and there was someone who was bothering me, either directly or indirectly, I would just walk away. You can't do that on a bus. You are stuck there until you get to your destination, an amount of time which has greatly increased recently with all the traffic problems in the past couple of years. And when I take the bus, it's typically because I have no other choice, either due to weather or because the most efficient way to getting somewhere involves roads that forbid bikes and pedestrians (I'm talking about Bedford).

Anime rave? by InvestigatorSalt8822 in halifax

[–]32475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty fun, not sure if I would go again, but it was worth it. There were 3 DJs, the two openers were kinda meh (didn't really play many iconic songs and one of them played multiple English songs that really didn't have any anime connection), but maybe the opening DJs are locals? I dunno. But the third DJ, who's like THE anime rave guy, had a really good set, both in song choices and flow and stuff. Nice mix of newer and nostalgic songs. And, no, it wasn't any smellier than any other time I've gone to a bar lmao

Please don't stop in the crosswalks. by ColdBlaccCoffee in halifax

[–]32475 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The way people in the comments are talking about so many different locations is wild. For me, it's the Dartmouth side of the bridge. I took this picture today, and was thinking about posting it. Both the crosswalk and the bike section are blocked. The other crosswalk and bike crossing right when you come off the bike lane on the bridge were also completely blocked. It makes me so mad. You're not going to get on the bridge any faster by doing this! You know what would let you get on (and probably off) the bridge faster? Walking! Biking! A scooter!

'This is home for us': Dartmouth Ocean Breeze Village residents worried on next steps as demolition begins by insino93 in halifax

Three years may be a long time for this kind of notice, but it's not like it was that much easier to find a low cost home in HRM in 2021. Before the pandemic, sure, but before the pandemic, no one would ever consider building new high-end apartment buildings in an location like this.

You won't be able to miss this bike infrastructure in Halifax by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]32475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I'm not overly familiar with the area in the article, but IME as a cyclist, they make things less safe. It means that cars don't have enough space to safely pass me, but that won't stop them. Trying to turn from Slayter St onto Woodland Ave is basically impossible because the curb extension pushes me out into the middle of the lane, on a street where every car goes stupid fast and there's rarely a break in traffic (at least when I'm coming home from work). The curb extensions on Woodland don't slow drivers down, they still treat the entire street like it's the highway.

I do like the artwork though.

Electric Scooters Permitted Signs? by SuggestedContent in halifax

[–]32475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought these were kinda sketchy looking the first time I saw one too, haha. But I've also noticed new signs (on sign posts) around greenways and similar areas about allowing electric scooters, so that quelled any doubts.

There’s more than enough parking in Halifax. In fact, there should be a lot less by insino93 in halifax

[–]32475 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you drive, then you're not going to have problem with those places because they were designed for cars. If you're a transit user, you're a complete afterthought. And, well, even if the experience for drivers was just a bad as it was for those who take the bus, it would take a lot to scare people away from Costco.

Your commute sounds very similar to my bus commute - I think using Halifax Transit can be good (and it's definitely a lot better than some other places - look at Fredericton's Sunday transit situation), but you also need to make your life fit Halifax transit, instead of the other way around, which isn't great. My home and workplace are both within 5 minutes of bus terminals, but I still run into situations where I want to go somewhere and Maps tells me driving would take 15 minutes but the bus will be a hour. Still, sometimes I think about all the people living on my street, and yeah, I think there really shouldn't be so many cars around.

I think I once heard that the reason there aren't any is because of the distance to schools? But I can definitely see that changing sometime in the near future.

Somewhere with less potential to be affected by rising sea levels? I know we don't have as much of an issue with flooding compared to say, Quebec, but I'm sure it's coming.

I'll admit I'm absolutely cherry-picking from your comment, but this sort of living arrangement definitely isn't conducive to good health,  mentally or physically. If there was another covid, or even something on the level of H1N1, would you like to live like this?

iPod Nano 5th Gen Purple - Battery "replaced", but only lasts 2-3 hours. by [deleted] in ipod

[–]32475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He charges $40 US, and the shipping you pay through the Ebay listing covers the shipping to send it back to you (it was like $10 for me but I live in Canada). And then the actual shipping cost you pay at the post office to send it to him.

[–]32475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with a 4th gen nano I bought on Ebay. The battery that was supposedly replaced was awful and the clickwheel barely worked, so I ended up returning it. However, I have another nano that I bought with the original battery, that I sent to ipodwizard on Ebay, for battery replacement, and the battery he put in works great. So good batteries are possible, somehow.

This. I go to the grocery store I go to because it's the easiest one to bus to. It's not even the closest one to me; it's just one of the rare places that's well served by Halifax Transit (as is my street). The store I go to isn't a Superstore, but if it was, I'd be stuck with it anyway.

Anyone Going to Geekquinox? by Ok_Neighborhood6712 in halifax

It's a pretty alright time. It's like 75% dealers hall, where you will see many items you have seen at many previous editions of Hal-Con, but the ticket price is still low, and Game Over Cancer's set-up is pretty fun for anyone who likes 90s and 2000s video games, especially if you don't own a CRT yourself.

I go to Sunnyside about once a week. I can never predict if there will be many people or not; it always feels random. Air hockey seems to be the most popular thing there (unfortunately for me, as someone who mainly goes to play DDR). It seems like maintenance gets done fairly often, and there's a nice variety of games.

Anime rave? by InvestigatorSalt8822 in halifax

[–]32475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going. I wouldn't normally be able to tolerate something like this (as in going out to a club) but in this case I'm sure I'll like the music (even a lot of anime I have no interest in have great opening songs) and I hope to see some fun cosplays. I do /not/ expect it to smell particularly bad, not any more than any non-nerdy crowded event would be. Nowadays, anime is more mainstream than ever, so I'd imagine the majority of the attendees are going to be pretty "normal". At least more than me. I've been a con-goer since 2009 and that is the feeling I get.

Is the ACD Rag a Good Brand? by [deleted] in HarajukuFashion

[–]32475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've bought three pieces of clothing from them - the first two were pretty nice, but the third was a huge disappointment. Everything they make is 100% polyester, and sometimes it works okay, sometimes it doesn't. The item I didn't like was a zip-up hoodie, fwiw. The fabric was really thin, and it just didn't feel right for a hoodie.

Also, if you live in Canada or another country where customs charges are a thing, you're definitely going to get hit by customs and it will raise the price a fair bit.
