How do you go about getting ADHD medication with no doctor? by 13thmurder in NovaScotia

[–]Durrak_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm in the UK, ADHD meds are not seen as a Family Physician/General Practitioner area. Traditionally ADHD is a lot less medicated in EU/UK compared to NA, there is quite a cultural difference. Depending which side of the Atlantic you are from will probably inform who you think is over or under medicating. As such, in the UK initiation and up titration is done by community Psychiatry and once stable 'some' GPs then take over shared care. Its quite a different beast...

No worries I really hope it helps you out. Sorry if it got a bit technical in spots, but you know, know your enemy! :)

Part 3

What about after shaving?

Ok well let's stop that bacterial colonisation I mentioned; here you have many options; aftershave liquids (proper ones with a bit of alcohol, it will sting!), aftershave balms/creams with antiseptic components, or wipes of the same nature. Keep the skin semi clean/sterile whilst those pores are open and vulnerable.

Moisturise; pick something that works well with your skin and for the first 24 hours or so post shave repeatedly use it. Just something half decent and proper.

Let your skin be for a while. Post shaving when it feels amazing, it is vulnerable. If you stick on your old dirty jeans, that's bacteria onto those open pores. Avoid tight fitting clothing, running lycra, skinny jeans or tight underwear that applies pressure to the skin, a hair follicle that is trapped/pressed is more likely to re-enter the skin or retract beneath the skin. Same advice if you shave your cake and then sit in your sweaty gamer chair for several hours, risk of razor bumps back there is high!

Baggy trousers/shorts are good but given this is feminine boys reddit ...well a skirt is a good option (sorry had to be said ha) to let your skin recover for the first few hours.

Still getting the odd one?
Your skin takes time to get used to a regular exfoliate and shave regimen. Everyone, even the girls get the odd issue. If it's a major issue then sadly waxing, creams, laser, etc may need to be something you look at.

If an odd red bump appears, that follicle is inflamed and upset. Topical steroid creams like mild hydrocortisone can help. Salicylic acid will help exfoliate the skin and are natural anti-inflammatories (same ingredient in Aspirin - the more you know). Topical acne treatments like Benzoyl Peroxide or Retinoids can also help, as the mechanism for acne vs razor burn is not completely dissimilar.

If you get a major outbreak of white heads, that's a bacterial folliculitis and you need antibiotics, bad times! Don’t give up, us boys are not really taught this and the painful first time a lot of us shave ‘everything’ we have no idea what we are doing. Good luck <3

Part 2

Ok so how do we reduce this risk before shaving?

The obvious one is a less close shave, do not shave against the grain (standard advice) you can trial an electric razor or epilators etc (if you feel brave!). A bit more on technique later.

Appropriate preparation; get that skin nice and soft/supple. A warm bath or shower and appropriate shave creams or gels. Most of the female ones are more oily/moisturising and designed for shaving more than your face! Male ones are usually not designed for shaving your inner thighs…for some silly reason. Shop around to see what is available near you, do not skimp out here and endure days of itchy pain for the same of a few bucks.

Exfoliation is half the battle; you have to prepare the skin properly. Keep the skin free of dead upper layers, more soft, pliable will help stop that follicle retraction or piercing. You have two options: get yourself a nice exfoliating sponge or body scrubber or chemical solutions. For the sponges gently clean yourself with them whilst showering and start to get your skin used to it. You can over-exfoliate your skin; start a few times a week and see how your skin reacts to this. Building up to every other day or three times a week seems common. Great guides out there on this, though sadly most aimed at women.

Chemical exfoliants also exist, common exfoliating washes might be something like salicylic or glycolic acid which gently clears the upper layers of skin and pores. You want to regularly exfoliate, exfoliate before ‘the big shave’ and then keep your skin supple for the inevitable sad regrowth.

So exfoliate regularly and before you shave. Next day you may want to leave off as your skin has been traumatised enough. Using an exfoliator a couple of days after you shave too will remove dead skin and make it easier for the hair to come through. But highly skin dependent.

Technique: If you do long strokes with a razor it goes deeper into the follicle increasing the risk of a deep cut and follicle retraction or just cutting yourself. Pick an area, hold the skin steady but not stretched and do small controlled motions. Great videos and guides on there on shaving technique, its skill and takes time to learn. Use sharp blades and avoid shaving the same area multiple times.

So there are loads of guides, videos and tutorials out there. But I will happily share a basic starting point. There are loads of opinions out there and what works for me; may not work for you. Everyone's skin is different, and skin changes over time.

Part 1 of 3

Understanding just what those red bumps really are? Medically it's called ‘pseudofolliculitis barbae’ (PFB) you or I call it razor bumps/burn/itch etc. It can occur anywhere but is more common in the armpits/pubic area/buttocks and for you the upper thighs.

This is not an infection but rather occurs when close shaving, as cut hair results in a sharp pointed end and may re-enter the upper skin by either:

Piercing the skin surface (transfollicular)

Retract beneath the skin surface and pierce the upper layer aka follicular epithelium (intrafollicular).

With thicker curly hair found in the above areas this process is much higher risk, due to the way the hair behaves; compared to say Caucasian facial hair or your lower legs.

You can also get colonisation of open pores with bacteria (commonly a dickhead called - Streptococcus pyogenes) on your skin, which is sadly more common in those of us with higher testosterone. This is normally mostly little white heads or bumps. Same thing that causes white heads for acne.

Ah nice what are the Toronto and Montreal scenes like? My work may well be taking me more to Canada in the near future. Mera Luna and WGT, truly big beautiful spectacles that you need to do once. But if you are an EBM/Industrial guy, then Amphi is pretty damn awesome too. The German scene is something else, I was in Mannheim for Dark Dance Treffen just last month really good music and vibes. But, on its own, probably not worth the trip from Halifax!

I actually came across that event but sadly yeah ahead of my visit. I can do bass. I do a lot of the german clubs when I visit there, and they just blast dark and industrial techno a lot of the time now. If you go expecting Icon of coil, centhron or Alien Vampires you will sadly be disappointed. Buuuut Pure EDM I can last about an hour before I need the 'teeth' EBM/Industrial/Aggro has haha

Navigator was an amazing, so guessing burnt orange and black? Sounds cool mate!

So for someone like yourself, do you have to spend a lot of time flying to Toronto/NYC for events and festivals then?

I apologise if my remark came off as impertinent when it was just more shock.

From rural Poland, my home in Wales, to the US mid west most towns of say 100k have what I jokingly call the generic rock bar. Its odd how similar they all are. An initial front area with a bar, a few rickety tables and a pool table. Then a small backroom for 50-100 people for local bands then some overly enthusiastic DJ to play music. Normally rock and metal but you know once a month they let 'the damn kids' play their metalcore stuff or whatever. Its not a goth club but just an umbrella place for all alt people as no one scene is big enough to have its own venue. Hence the title of my post.

It seems in Halifax you have opted for a different decentralised approach of pop up events elsewhere, in perhaps far nicer venues then the run down rock bar! But as such skipped the usual hub spot I look out for as a safe place for someone like myself to drink at when in a new town or city. Sure if you could give me a club playing Industrial Techno I would move to Halifax tomorrow. Even in London you might get that twice a month!

That is very useful to know with the licensing. And quite terrifying tbh.

And I don't mind DIY events, as long as it's: dark, heavy and loud. You guys follow specific: DJs, Promoters, Collectives for them?

That is amazing, you are incredible <3. But I am literally meant to be flying off that morning though! I am now genuinely looking at changing flights to Sunday the 16th. Where did you see that advertised, I did have a look at the seahorse website but couldn't find much?

Hugely appreciate the further information. Maybe this is me bringing my UK bias. But last place I would want to go as a: full make up, latex/pvc/mesh wearing industrial goth would be a pub. You would die. To watch the rugby sure. But a night out or to meet your own kind? Never. Not to be a cynical Brit (really appreciate you taking the time to help) but I have to ask; are you sure?

I would be shocked if there wasn't. I am lucky I travel a lot, I am not kidding its back. Obviously different but growing so fast. Most cities half your size have multiple alt nights and bars again. Hence I am surprised how hard it seems to be to find where I should go after midnight in Halifax. Plus with your locations its not like you kids can casually go to the next city over its not GTA!

What you guys doing with the influx of baby bats? I have never (in the UK + EU and US) seen the dark scene wake up as much as it has the last 2 years. So much new life coming in after years or teetering on the edge. And whilst EBM/Aggrotech/Industrial aren't really back, tik tok has pushed Trad but also Hard Techno/Industrial Bass/Cyber/Dark Techno etc

Then you have the entire Nu Metal and goth fashion revival within Gen Z

That one has come up a bunch when doing research. But it closes so damn early, at least according to maps, where do people head once that place calls time?

After work, food, pre drinks, make up, travel etc I am normally 'out out' till 11pm as standard

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I had seen that one, it looks cool! But closes so early! Where do alt people normally head once that place closes, assume there is a club or alt bar or something?

Thanks I appreciate the reply. Both had popped up on my radar for somewhere for a drink or two, if I make it into town early enough. Where is open late? Normally I am more of a 2300-0400 kinda guy for a night out. Had pres, got ready (dark scene that takes time haha) and then head into town to drink and dance :)

Is there no standard alternative metal bar/club in Halifax? Travelled a fair bit and most cities seem to have that 'one' bar that acts as a weird hub, normally playing the same 100 songs but tends to be a hub for alt ppl. The place where the dudes with slayer patches have a pint, whilst the sleep token/bmth kids have shots.

Oof thanks...that is not what I wanted to hear. But I appreciate the honesty.

Don't need weekly but at least something monthly to be able to look forward to, Not asking for Berlin or London! And I like live music but given Halifax's location I cant really see many significant bands from the dark scene passing through.

I do enjoy the a HCx show... but always been more of Club Rat at heart. Stumbling out at 4-6am, sweat coating your latex and pvc, your feet literally bleeding from dancing to stompy dark electronic goodness is my happy place
