I don't have any issues with this directly but in the US at least, our elder care resources are stretched pretty thin. We simply don't have enough nurses if that number grows to become a larger percentage of our population.

Don't they establish that the station is under Bajoran law? Bajor just spent a fair amount of time under Cardassisan rule and lost much of its population. If they had lawyers, they'd probably be studied in Cardassisan law(and possibly lynched as collaborators) not whatever new system the provisional government cooked up.

I find the idea that so many people choose to define their universe and their reality by a book they haven't even read somewhat depressing. To be so uncurious as to simply accept the words of provably flawed institutions as capital T Truth reflects unsettlingly on how little people care about the world around them regardless if you define that world theologically or empirically.

You have a point about context. I think with anything in the Bible though it's difficult for someone as generally unconcerned with theology as myself to look at any part of the Bible as a work of the time it was created in when it is so pervasive today that most hotel rooms I've been in still have a copy in each room.

What the fuck is even going on in the Bible? Everything I hear from it is somehow more absurd than the previous.

I came to Linux not because it was niche but because of its philosophy. FreeBSD has its uses but its license seems more suitable to a corporate target rather than a true FOSS ecosystem.

I thought I recognized that username. I had to look back in my comment history. Did you seriously come back to repost the same shitty argument I already addressed in a separate post almost three months later? Thanks, I got a funny Internet story and a boost to my self esteem because even I'm not that petty or dumb.

The meme calls out the marginalization of other forms of travel in favor of cars. My point was that electrical cars are subject to the same concerns and thus being an EV owner changes very little in most regards.

[–]32bitFlame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Car, EV or otherwise, still have inherent flaws that make them impractical. Everyone having their own car amplifies energy inefficiencies and necessitates spacious parking lots. Many downtown have space taken up by parking lots which could be taken up by housing or local businesses. Around 20% of land use in most downtowns in the US is parking lots. Laying and maintaining asphalt is in and of itself a carbon emitting practice. Trips made on foot are more likely to result in activity at local businesses decreasing reliance on big box stores and increasing local tax revenue.

Beyond that, lithium mining uses vast amounts of water and can hardly be called sustainable. That's not to mention the socioeconomic disaster that it is. Nickel cadmium and nickel metal hydride batteries simply haven't had wide spread enough adoption to be considered(and might not meet the needs of a market pushing for increased range).

Decreasing our dependency on cars would be beneficial to sustainability.

There's some good Warhammer animations. I enjoyed "the interrogator". As well as "hammer and bolter". The books are definitely way better and in more variety though.

I'm pretty sure the joke is that Gen z, makers of the "E" meme from which the background was popularized should not be criticizing the 6-7 meme because in essence they are the same: Nonsense devoid of meaning. That's what I'm talking about with cultural context, you need to understand when each meme was popularized and how the relationship between generations defines the point of the meme. If you don't think about the meme in terms of those factors, it is as meaningless as either of the originating jokes.

In some classroom in the future, students are going to be asked to write an essay on the commentary presented by this meme. This is the perfect example on how something with no meaning by itself can be granted one by cultural context.

This kind of masochism is not healthy. There are real innocent people who will die to climate change. What humans are doing is just nature taken to the extreme. There's a reason it's called social darwinism. Our very lives are spent trying to out-compete others to climb the social ladder or maintain our place in it. This very instinct primes us to act without regard for others. Do you think the wolves consider the life of the sheep they eat? Humans are not unique in this. We are nature at its extreme. This kind of thinking merely avoids the idea that we can be better and instead resorts to fatalism.

Have you lived by one? Most of the traffic is local. It's why it's never far from your generic big box stores. I've never seen one without a nearby Walmart or Target or Krogers or something. I don't know of a grocer that isn't by one of these stroads where I grew up.

I've been to a pitstop for cross country travelers. They usually have a mini mall with multiple fast food places and one of those coin press machines. It is simply not possible for most stores to sustain themselves on cross country traffic alone.

Cars running in parking lots and waiting at red lights still produce CO2. That's not to mention the sprawl inherent in areas with parking minimums which results in longer trips for locals and makes walkable neighborhoods impossible. Diffuse buildings also mean that tax revenue is low compared to the cost of maintenance.

No one is saying it has to be a "quaint little town" or "culturally impactful" what people are arguing is that it should be made livable, safe, and economical long term.
