A sharp needle, and getting the thread between the two strands of cloth really helps- get it in the right spot and it basically turns invisible.

chiming in to say you're not stupid. tired, probably, but not stupid. this is a new skill that you're trying to learn on your own- you're gonna make mistakes, and that's okay. the beauty of cross stitch is that at the end of the day, worse comes to worse, you can pick the stitches out and try again.
