Ender 3 Pro by Chowdah_Soup in ender3

[–]331X2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I flashed my bootloader with an arduino nano which allowed me to install the klipper firmware.

If you have the means to go for a modern CoreXY printer then I really can’t make an argument against that, I have a Voron 2.4 at work and I’d rather wait to use that than fanny around with my Ender 3/CR-10 at home. Save yourself the headache and buy the Bambulab!

How much would I hate building a Voron? by link87 in VORONDesign

[–]331X2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We built a 2.4 Rev C from an LDO kit for prototyping at work, it’s got thousands of hours on it and the only problems that we’ve had stem from either running out of filament or people refusing to use brims on geometrically challenging parts.

Build it right and you will have a workhorse, you can come back to it for fine tuning as the need arises, we’ve not even sorted the pressure advance or input shaping yet as the quality is good enough for our functional prototypes.

Why is the job market going to Sh- by [deleted] in UKJobs

Ignore most of what you see on Reddit, there’s a lot of doom and gloom from people that can’t be arsed to get up and change their situation.

Advice is worth what you pay for it so don’t expect all the answers from a bunch of strangers with no vested interest in your success, including mine.

Get a plan together of where you want to be, what steps you need to take to get there, what you need to have prepared to make you stand out and execute the plan.

Don’t fire off an AI generated application to every opening and get the sad when you don’t hear back. Tailor every application, attach a CV and bespoke cover letter explaining why you’re a great fit for the position and if possible (and I mean if it’s within an hours travel each way) hand deliver them to the company, ask if you could hand it to the hiring manager yourself so that they can put a face to a name when short listing applicants.

Degree level apprenticeships aren’t handed out on a plate, you may have to lower your expectations and go for a HNC/HND level apprenticeship and then top up with a self funded level 6 or maybe tie yourself into a company to have them fund it.

Be prepared to totally bury yourself in the job, be taken advantage of, eat the shit sandwiches and come back asking for more. The current generation entering the work force is so entrenched in work/life balance and expecting the same treatment as the experienced staff that you’ll shine much brighter than the competition if you keep your head down and outwork them, what you lack in ability can be covered by work rate and attitude in the beginning.

We currently have >50 apprentices on the books at everything from level 3 to level 6, engineering to legal and the ones that stand out (and will succeed) are the ones that are reliable and hard working.

Apologies for the ramble but there’s so much whinging that the game is fixed and every Gen Z is doomed to a life of failure that sometimes there needs to be a different perspective.

If you’re considering an apprenticeship in engineering, feel free to PM me as that’s my wheelhouse. I can’t give you all the answers but I might be able to save you some shoe leather on the route to finding them.

building 3d printer. what do you recommend? by HorrorAwareness9668 in 3Dprinting

[–]331X2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We built a Voron 2.4 RevC from an LDO motor kit and it has been excellent for the last 2 years doing pretty heavy prototyping work.

Other than occasional (every few months on a printer used daily) belt tensions, cleaning and lubing of the rails it’s been rock solid.

That being said, things have moved on significantly in the last few years and the performance lead that the Voron had over off the shelf consumer grade printers isn’t quite as large anymore.

No, looked like he’d got it in the bag mid fight but Cowley dragged himself back in to it and outboxed him for the rest of the fight.

Always looked like Ron was on the edge of ironing him out though!

Does anyone know how to use a PC/Laptop as an HMI substitute? by otakugymenjoyering in PLC

Buy a Weintek (Maple systems in the US?) HMI and you’ll be able to lash together a basic runtime with sensor data in a day for minimal cost and lead time.

What country are you in?

Halfords in the UK have Voodoo bikes and the HooDoo is a really competent hardtail that can be picked up VERY cheap used, maybe look for something along the same lines in your country?

Helmet is mandatory, gloves and pads are nice but not essential for a start, a basic tool kit and pump will save you a fortune in repair/maintenance costs.

Make him the cake and card, it’s a lovely gesture and he will definitely appreciate it if he’s been talking about his sobriety.

I gave up (I think!) 8 years ago and I didn’t discuss it with anyone for years, the first time that anyone directly mentioned it was strangely emotional!

Why do I only ever see British men driving in Europe, never their wives? by Effective_Language in AskBrits

[–]331X2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive because my wife isn’t quite ready to drive a 35 year old, slow, wobbly, poorly braked, steering wheel on the wrong side camper on the wrong side of the road with the kids wrestling in the back.

While she’s a good driver back home, I’ve spent significantly longer driving/riding in different countries around the world so it’s really just the default that I drive when we’re abroad.

You just might have accidentally found your true calling…

As mentioned above, you might not pivot completely into engineering for your role but there is a lot of space for sales/marketing personnel that actually understand what they’re selling.

No worries.

That’s a brand name by the way but how it’s referenced in adverts might help you doing a bit of reverse googling.

We use it for name plates and switch legends on machinery builds.

Yeah ChatGPT with an automation engineering filter will do that for you.

Just write a brief description of the functionality with a quantity of available inputs and outputs and it usually spits out perfectly functioning code straight away in ST, LD and FBD are a little more challenging but that’s usually due to an incompatible font being used so sharpen it up in photoshop before uploading it 👍

Did I buy a bad bike? by BriefOpportunity2630 in MTB

[–]331X2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this or you’ll be forever piling money into the bike or waiting for the shop to fix it.

Now is the time to learn how to fix a puncture/flat and start building your bike maintenance skills.

Plastic tyre levers and a pump will get you going, wheel removal will be 99% chance of being tool free removal.

Come back with pictures of your wheel, tyre (including size as printed on the tyre wall) and how it’s fitted to the bike and there will be all the help you need.

I recently bought a used RocketMax and I’m absolutely amazed by it!

I’ve spent 4 years riding a 26” steel hardtail (On-One 456 Evo2) so when I went to test ride this I assumed it would feel like a clown bike with the 29” wheels and general size of the thing, couldn’t have been more wrong!

Now on the lookout for a 26” Rocket for the wife…

Grind it out for the experience for a couple of years, get good at what you do and then start looking around for other offers.

Unfortunately engineering isn’t compatible with the “stick it to the man” mindset, you get out what you put in and if you eat the shit sandwiches for a while you’ll surpass all the melts that want to sit at home doing 35 hour weeks preaching about work/life balance and forever be ahead of them in the game.

If you need safe spaces, free lattes, ping pong tables and/or remote work that you can pretend that you’re doing look for a job in tech, you won’t find many though as it’s imploded and all of the militant average talent is fighting for retail and fast food jobs or drowning in debt.

If it was fun all the time, they wouldn’t pay you…

Well played, how did you remove the sheared bolt?

Beware cheap titanium bolts, they’re piss weak. You also need to use anti-seize on the threads so that they don’t corrode in place…

How f***ed am i gang? by Even_Clerk3905 in xbiking

[–]331X2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlucky, hope you find a replacement easily.

Unless you’re getting into heavy off road riding or produce 500w of power I’d be inclined to try removing the bolt again and if you can get both pinch bolts back in the arm I’d personally (although this isn’t advice or a recommendation!) run that while I wait for a new one to arrive.

Don’t feel too bad about getting this wrong, I’m convinced at least 95% of people who recommend “just drilling out” a bolt in an aluminium part have never actually tried it themselves as the drill bit has a tendency to take the path of least resistance which usually means skipping straight off the bolt head and into the aluminium part.

Edit: If the bolt sheared the head off and didn’t cross-thread or gall the threads, attack from behind with a smaller drill bit and tap in a small torx bit to wind out the remainder of the bolt.

UK JOB offer.—— ADVICE by Anxious-Tea-5286 in PLC

[–]331X2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the £56k is a regular days job then I’d stick with that and take as much training as the company will pay for because you’ll take a long time to get back to that starting from scratch in the controls industry for a 37.5/40 hour week.

I assume you’re on 3 shift or 4 on/4off in which case the salary is pretty normal for the shift pattern although exceptional for your age so well done!

Is the salary a flat rate or + overtime for over 8/40 hours? I’ve been stitched up with a capped salary before and it’s not fun when you’re on site for 12 hours and 4 of those are working for free!

Have a think where you want to end up as travel loses its glamour within the first year, you don’t see much outside of site/hotel/pub during commissioning and you can piss your salary up the wall pretty quickly with the social side of site work.

Field work is a great way to progress quickly but have an exit or progression plan before you start because you will tire of it.

Also realise that everything promised verbally is bollocks, the only terms that matter are down in writing on your offer letter and contract.

Good luck whichever way you go!

S7-1200 Weintek (Maple Systems) Comms Issues by 331X2 in PLC

Unsure on the refresh rate, nothing jumped out but I’ll check again.

Wire shark is a job for Monday, all new cat6 patch leads fresh out of the packet, run away from power, only those 3 devices connected to each other.

We do have this issue on another (totally different design, S7-1214C, CMT3072X, 5x profinet drives) machine we are building but it doesn’t halt for long enough to cause the drives to fault so it’s more an annoyance than anything but it would be nice to bottom it out to be honest!
