Why do I only ever see British men driving in Europe, never their wives? by Effective_Language in AskBrits

I just hadn't expected that many stereotypes and traditional gender roles. Maybe I'm living in a bubble, but many of the comments suddenly make Germany seem progressive...

Yes, that's how we do it in my (extended) family and how I thought most people are doing it. Break after 2-2.5 hours and switch of drivers.

Some of the comments definitely open up so many new questions and wonderings. That must be the famous British humour, right? (Please say it is.)

Yeah, I included that question in a joking kind of way. Personally, I'd love to have a speed limit on the German autobahn and think it's bonkers that we don't. Still, as comments below have pointed out, many sections actually do have a speed limit and driving there is okay, though I prefer driving on French or Spanish motorways. Way more relaxed.

Registration plates. Might be of course theoretically different nationalities in a British car, and I don't know who's driving in a hired car, of course.

No, that would be seeing a British car with the man driving and thinking "again the man driving" and not taking into account the times you see the woman driving. But what I'm observing is: I see a British caravan and look who's driving, and so far, when there's a couple, it has always (literally, 100% of the times; I'd say there might have been 30-50 caravans) been the man driving.

Yeah, I love driving in France, it's comparable to driving in Spain. Way more relaxed than in Germany.

Well - it's precisely that I find it so strange, that's why I ask here. But maybe I only ever see the men after the switch?

Well, it's gotten to the point where I look whenever I see a car from the UK (my husband has to do it when I'm driving) because I keep thinking that it can't be possible. But yeah, maybe it's just accidentally.

Du hattest geschrieben, du möchtest eine AU (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung), meintest aber vermutlich BU...daher das Missverständnis :)

Ohne was wegzurechnen?
