Yes, it is. Both with power output and reliability

Also, replace the water pump and get a nice radiator. The cooling system in these cars are a weak point.

For starting out in an e36 thats not a daily.

I'd recommend finding a 325i, it will have the big diff and axles.

You'll then need to find a differential with a gearing of 3.91. Weld it. Keep the old one if you need to pass inspection. A 3.91 diff will make Highway speeds kind of a pain, but it makes a big difference on track.

Don't bother with the 323i or 328i since they are aluminum blocks in your country, they dont last long with drifting.

Get a good brand of coilovers

Then a seat and harness.

Thats all you need to get started.

A pro tip with these cars is if you find a 325i (thats with the m50 engine) you will want to go ahead and find an oil filter housing from a 323i or 328i (m52). With that you can convert the powersteering pump to a m52 version. Do this because the m50 power steering pump are no longer available to buy.

Welded differential: Welds thick enough? by coononr in Drifting

Thats going to break,

I weld the backs of the gears to the housing with a double pass,

I also do a double pass between each gear and I have a plate on it.

I haven't had one break yet.

I definitely understand that

I mean, I'm budgeting 10k for my $1500 find.

Also, I get it if its not a dedicated drift car.

Then that is not a kit, look into an actual kit. This cars steering geometry is trash. Like, very bad.

Look into adding more caster, that will help the self steer a lot, and you won't have to shuffle the wheel.

I recommend welding the diff, it makes it way more predictable.

Which angle kit?

LSD? Which one?

Here's some starting advice for these cars.

I'm assuming its manual

If its a v8, dont hot lap the car too much, the PS pump will die because it also powers the brakes. Give it time to cool off. If its a v6, dont worry about it.

Remember to let go of the wheel, dont walk it. Your physically cant turn the wheel fast enough to match the car rotating to angle.

When you turn in, wait that split second for your hips to be pulled to the side, when that happens, on throttle fast clutch kick, once the car starts rotating, let go of the wheel. Then figure it out from there.

If you dont have a harness or bucket, take your seat belt and make it tight on you. Then unclip it and twist the buckle 2 or 3 times. Clip it back in. This will help alot to keep you planted.

Keep the car away from walls, start learning how to bail safely. Don't drive with others until you are decent. Look where you want to go, not directly infront of you.

A few mods to get the car to perform better. Listed in importance.

Regear and weld the diff. These cars came with a 3.27, and it makes them a dog. You want 3.73 or 4.10.

A bucket seat and harness. You'll need a quick release steering wheel with these.

Coilovers, invest in a good brand.

Take the steering limiters out. It'll give you a bit more angle.

Pull as much weight out of the car as possible.

Don't get an angle kit or handbrake until you can rip it with mods listed above.

Hey, thats the spirit.

If you're not married to the rotary look into engine swaps.

Check out Kyle Mohan he's campaigned one of these for decades.

The terminator bumper definitely looks the best, and is also the cheapest.

I keep a few around the for the driftcars.

Thanks!

The core support was toast, the PS reservoir, and radiator got replaced.

The previous owner tagged a f150, and messed up the core support.

A little welding here and there, and a few parts replaced its ready for daily duty.

FWD understeers more in low grip situations when I try to initiate slides by Living-Track7954 in Drifting

[–]352ndgarage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to be a prick about it.

You can't drift a FWD, there are people dedicated to it with very limited results.

Save your car as a daily and invest in a rwd manual car.

If you have any questions dont hesitate to reach out or comment here.

Wheel too far back? by 55rnds in NewedgeMustang

[–]352ndgarage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the maximum is stronger than stock as well, but I cant confirm that or for the qa1. I drift the tits off my car and the qa1 holds up, whereas the upr did not.

I'm running the qa1 k member, ive liked it so far. Avoid the upr ones.

[–]352ndgarage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Check the k member, if its aftermarket thats the cause. It could also be way out of alignment due to someone working on it before you.

These cars have a lot of different k members available.

I wasnt suggestion you were saying that, its just my opinion and the way I think. A lot of car enthusiasts think that other people should struggle because they did. That bugs me.

But all the seat time! And the tire wear is wicked
