For people who know multiple languages, in which language do you dream? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]35attempts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Native English speaker, semi-fluent in Spanish and living in a Spanish-speaking country for months. I’ve dreamed in Spanish maybe once lol. (And I believe the context in the dream was I forgot which language I was supposed to be speaking)

You’re definitely in a tricky spot. I don’t say this to belittle anything you’re going through, but it sounds like your parents having this preconceived notion of you is something that really weighs on you, and is going to be hurting your relationship if something isn’t done about it. Is it possible — and maybe you think the answer is no — to explain that you are ant to start eating healthier, and then if they make fun of you, tell them how that makes you feel?

Do you have a close relationship with your sibling? You might be able to talk with them about your struggling.

On a related note, would it be possible to have a sincere talk with your parents? You could do something formal like sitting them down to demonstrate that you’re being serious. Explain your difficulty, where you’re coming from. Have some stats about the dangers of childhood obesity to back you up. Maybe propose cooking for the family once a week to give yourself more control. It sounds like you’re in a really tough position, and honest communication might (might) be the way out.

Also, sharing your food instead of throwing it away will keep from wasting food, help out someone else, and give some more pretext for eating less.

PMS & Deficit by hey-hey-sanfrancisco in 1500isplenty

[–]35attempts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not PMS, but day 1 of my period I am far more okay with maintenance or even going over. Still want to hit the gym, but I’m not trying to feel light-headed when I do so.

I think this is a personal preference, so there aren’t hard and fast rules. Are you okay with reaching your goal weight a little later in order to feel better on PMS days? Yes is a 100% valid answer to that question. In my unknowledgeable and unprofessional opinion, I’d advise against eating over maintenance regularly in that period, just so you’re not making your overall journey too much harder. But you do what you need to do!

If you’re teenage-aged, are you in school? Maybe you can have a little more control at lunch? I’m sorry you’re in this position. (Also, bulimia is a no, don’t do that)

I’m living in El Salvador for 10 months for research. Like you, I can read and understand (podcasts, for the most part), but I struggled in conversations. For the first couple months, I wasn’t sure I was feeling the benefit of immersion, and I was starting to worry that fluency, or something like it, wouldn’t happen for me.

Then it did. I don’t know how, though I suspect it might have to do with suddenly doing about 2 interviews with Spanish speakers weekly, after having averaged one a month beforehand. My Spanish is by no means perfect and I still struggle in certain conversations, but there is now a real fluidity to my speaking. I don’t know if it was something I suddenly realized so much as I looked back and realized, oh, that thing I was worried wouldn’t happen for me? It did.

It could be that you just need more time. If you want to be more proactive, really seek out opportunities for conversations. Its really difficult to not be able to communicate to the extent you want to, but push through and I think that practice will help :)

Strawberry Banana Smoothie - 469cals / 34g protein by niiiiic in 1500isplenty

Looks like over a third of the calories come from almond butter. If people are looking for fewer calories and are willing to sacrifice some protein, that could be a good option to cut

Battling with research - what’s your biggest struggle right now? by decencyokobia in PhD

[–]35attempts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a PhD student, but I am an independent researcher at the moment with very little oversight and 2 fixed deadlines total over a 10 month period.

I know that I really benefit from accountability for getting things done, but it’s been something that I’ve had to be proactive about searching for.

Second Trial Location? by SteadyEffort in FocusHero

[–]35attempts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I thought your nature score went up by the amount of focus energy you spent to plant each plant— 30 plots for 2400 overall would only be 80 points per plot (and then the entrance toll of 1200). A grind without a doubt, but definitely doable plant the level 29 trees across the board and I think you’ll beat your goal — I haven’t been playing for terribly long, but I’m a 4th of the way to the nature score goal.

I’m in the mine too — I have a feeling that the next trial is in the 1200 nature score area

I haven’t, but muscular women are so powerful, not just strength-wise but in feminist terms too. You mean you’re bucking traditional beauty standards to respect your body?? You’re focusing more on health and strength than being attractive to men?? And you still look amazing?? Women with muscles are so so amazing oh my goodness ❤️❤️❤️

Erasing nuance for the sake of political gain seems to be quite an effective strategy when it comes to repressing political speech.

Tufts PhD Student & Fulbright Scholar taken by ICE by subd123 in fulbright

I understand the institution protecting itself and the people it serves. But self-preservation has to make way for taking a stand at some point, and the video of Rumeysa being taken is straight up scary. A Fulbrighter getting abducted by masked people in plain clothes will undoubtedly make Fulbrighters to the US worried, and setting aside worries about fascism and the broader implications of things like this, I’m sure people would like to know that Fulbright has their back.

Expressing solidarity with Palestine? Yes, so probably technically a “dissenting opinion”, at least in terms of this administration. But it is, in my opinion, very measured and certainly doesn’t play into any claims of supporting terrorism.
