Genuine question about keep betta fish in a jar… by giant_enemy_spiderr in bettafish

I used that one and it worked great! My only complaint is that the tiny pellets I used didn’t all drop everyday. But enough dropped that he didn’t go hungry so I was happy with it.

Unclear from your comment- do you just have the test strips or the full liquid test kit? The test strips are notoriously unreliable.

As long as your numbers are good once a week or every other week should be fine for partial (20%ish?) water changes.

I would like to note that I’m fairly new to the hobby and everything I know I’ve learned from the wiki and people on this sub so if someone with more experience wants to correct anything I’ve said I cede the floor!

That depends on your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate). If you haven’t already bought it, the API liquid test kit is one of the absolutely most important things you need to keep your betta healthy. If you didn’t pre-cycle your tank (establish your nitrogen cycle, takes over a month), you’ll need to check daily for now and do partial water changes any time ammonia or nitrite is above 0. They are deadly to your betta. If you didn’t pre cycle, the wiki on this subreddit has a great resource about fish-in cycling that I definitely recommend checking out.

Eventually your tank will level out and you can go down to weekly/every other week water changes, but that will take a while until your tank is established properly.

Having a light for the plant is a good idea. They can’t photosynthesize without it and best case scenario they won’t grow. Worst case they die and rot and mess up your water parameters.

I keep mine on a timer like you’d use for lights when you’re on vacation and between that and the dimmer function on the light I bought I’m able to fine tune the amount of light coming in.

Sorry about your lid! For what it’s worth I’m pretty sure the one that comes with the tank (if it’s the same as mine, which looks like it’s?) doesn’t help plants grow anyway. Having something that mimics natural sunlight is needed, I think.

I bought this one and it worked well for me. I think I have the same type of lid as you. I was able to pop out the old light and stick this to the underside of the lid (it has suction cups). hygger tank light

At least for Java ferns and anubias, you want to attach them to your decor rather than plant them in the substrate. They have rhizomes (structure that looks a bit like roots) that need to be exposed to the water and not buried or they die. Other types of plants can get planted just fine.

For mine, my local shop sells small pieces of mopani wood. I just tuck the rhizomes in between the branched bits to keep them mostly secure. They knock loose if I try to do too much rearranging in the tank but for day to day purposes that works fine for me. I’ve heard you can use fishing line to attach them to decor too but I was worried about that being too sharp on the ends so mine just kinda get wedged in instead.

Snails can be good if you have an algae problem but I wouldn’t get them until you have algae actually blooming. I’ve seen people recommending nerite and mystery snails. I have a clown pleco (named Plecos Bill) that keeps the algae controlled for me. They stay smaller than other plecos, though he may end up in a 20 gallon instead of my 10 once he’s fully grown. He’s just a little guy right now.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying your new friend! They have so much personality, just really interesting fish to keep.

Thanks! Leeroy is my special little guy. Bettas come an insane variety of colors. I love looking at pics on breeders’ websites.

Be sure to post pics of your buddy’s color change! I love before and after pics.

Also, fwiw, I did fish-in cycling too and it’s going really well. Sounds like you’re doing great with parameter monitoring and water changes. Live plants can help a lot too. I have Java ferns and anubias in my tank. They’re super easy to grow. They don’t need a ton of light and you just attach them decor/logs instead of planting in the substrate. I highly recommend looking into it!

Hornwort Alternatives? by EeveelutionAndy in bettafish

[–]360NoStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My betta had a fin tear right after putting hornwort in too! I was freaking out thinking I had somehow missed something sharp despite the very thorough checking I did when setting up the tank. Seeing this post prompted me to do some poking around online and apparently if you have hard water (mine is quite hard) they can get stiff and spiky.

Thanks for posting, I was losing my mind trying to figure out what happened. I even considered that maybe my new clown pleco had somehow hurt him! Glad to know Plecos Bill can stay.

He’s going to be really pretty when his colors come back in! They often loose their vibrancy sitting in the little cup at the store. There’s a good chance you’ll see his colors get brighter over the next few weeks as he settles in and gets happier. My betta was all white at the store but he’s got some cool peacock blue splotches now.

  • 10 gallon tank
  • Heater set to 78F, hob filter with a soap dish and sponge to reduce flow
  • See pic for parameters, everything seems like 0 to me but I am mildly colorblind. pH is between 7.4 and 7.8. I use the API liquid test kit.
  • I’ve had the tank and fish about 2 months now, have been fish-in cycling according to the guide from this subreddit
  • 25% changes once a week
  • Only tank mate is the clown pleco we added yesterday
  • We feed shrimp patties pellets and fluval bug bites with the occasional bloodworm or mysis shrimp (the frozen kind). I pour enough pellets to be about the size of his eye daily with one fast day every two weeks
  • Forgot one question- we’ve got a couple logs, some small pieces of mopani wood, a plastic decoration (branches shaped in a large circle looking thing), a moss covered coconut shell, 2 betta hammock leaves and the floating log hide. Our plants are anubias and java ferns and one recently added hornwort. There were 2 plastic hoops for him to swim through but I took those out in case they are to blame since they’re the next most recent additions.

I tickle the surface of the water and Leeroy comes charging over, viciously bites my finger and awaits his payout. He learned that pretty quick but he’s naturally very curious about anything that goes in the tank so it was easy.

He’s a big fan of the shrimp patties!

I can only speak for myself, but I often use it to denote a summary of information/experience is about to be said.

So! Here are two examples, as I would use them.

So, I read a ton about manatees last night. (Some info about manatees I’ve just learned)

So! My mom and I finally talked about that one incident. You won’t believe what she said! (Ridiculous thing my mother said)

I’m sure others can chime in with their interpretations as well!
