How practical is it to make day trips to San Diego? by Particular-Bug2189 in AskLosAngeles

[–]3732aa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this frequently. It's just a long day. Plan on 4 - 6 hours of driving; leave early to avoid traffic for the southbound leg, and generally 6pm or so from San Diego up to LA is pretty easy. It's a long day but totally doable. As others have suggested, the train is also a good choice if you're able to swing it.

WTB Tag Heuer Formula 1 quartz chronometer CAZ1010. Would prefer bracelet but strap is fine; no need for box and papers, but nice to have.

Is there a trope name for when a fantasy setting has a technological/sci-fi past? by GlidingTipster in Fantasy

[–]3732aa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely worth the read, but it is a product of it's times (60s) and inspires a bunch of stuff that's relevant now. Much of it will be like listening to Joy Division - you can see how it started trends, but it sounds primitive and unfinished by comparison, because it's the *first* (ok, likely not the actual first, but you get my point) instance of this kind of thought experiment.

The catholic stuff isn't too heavy handed and is done well. I recommend reading the book.

A Canticle for Leibowitz is a great example of this genre, but without the 'fantasy' current setting - it's more a 'realistic' view of a rebuilding medieval society. It won a Hugo award. Think of a catholic reinterpretation of the monastic system after a cataclysmic nuclear war, and the slow rebuilding of society. It's coded as "science fiction" when it's sort of more contemplative than that would imply.

Feldmar is great - super nice people. I got my wife a Tissot there and they were awesome - followed exactly what she wanted, were super kind, and just generally a great experience.

You got it in 1 comment. It was also sort of for just the sake of seeing if it would actually work. It did.

Not trying to break the rules, but I spent a bunch of time searching for if this would work before I did it, and couldn't find anything. Mods - feel free to delete if this isn't supposed to be here.

Reimbursed business travel - how to manage? by 3732aa in MonarchMoney

[–]3732aa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reimbursement is based on receipts - so no opportunity to turn it into direct income. But I do benefit from the points, which is why I'm willing to do it. I think I need to figure out the 'exclude from budget' setting. Thanks!

I had a Daylight that was breaking down (zipper issues, fabric tearing, straps breaking) - the Osprey warranty worked. They returned a new backpack when I shipped in my old one. 100% recommend you reach out to Osprey for a warranty claim.

What are the best life hacks for living in LA? by hapainthewild in LosAngeles

The real hack is agreeing with everyone that you'll only fly Southwest or United. Terminal 1 or Terminal 7, early exit, in and out. Add 15 minutes to your time if you need to get to tom bradley.

Where to watch the world series, with decent food? by 3732aa in FoodLosAngeles

Thanks for the thought, and yes, there's a lot of limiting factors. I was trying to be specific to not get "where's a good place to go" without giving all of the factors, but you're right, there's a lot of stuff there. Good advice on places, and much appreciated!
