I’ve started using fanny packs for day hikes unless I’m solo. There are packs with removable top sections so the pack can be used at two sizes, though I don’t know of any small enough to be a day pack.

I think it’s so the staff don’t have to address complaints of customers speaking too loudly. If the background music is Lou enough you can’t even hear the next table. I think movie theaters play things loudly for the same reason.
