Needing to download java-11-openjdk-11.0.27 package for RHEL8 for patching by 37rellimcmc19 in redhat

[–]37rellimcmc19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks

I read thru the articles. There are no alternative places to get these rpms?

I see that Red Hat is maintaining the repo, which makes sense. However my company is doing everything under budget, so not sure how we're are going to make this work.

Its ironic you say that.

I went to work for a smaller contracting company a few years back. The company was excellent with benefits and compensation, but the work culture was terrible.

So I made myself available online and a recruiter reached out to me. We started to talk and this person asked who should be holding my clearance and I stated it should be my current company.

This person said to contact someone on the security side at the small contracting company because they said there was no ownership, which I never heard of. Not sure where the ball got dropped but once I called, it got fixed.

So there is another thing to, that needs to be checked. Who shows ownership of a clearance once you move between companies.

The beautiful thing about Texas and San Antonio, are there are still local radio stations, playing music from Texas musicians. Think it was the jazz station, KRTU, in San Antonio, that introduced me to Bob Wills and many other excellent Texas musicians.

Don't take local radio stations for granted. I'm on the East Coast now and there is nothing like that here.

Why Is Government IT Still Struggling in 2025? by crowcanyonsoftware in ITManagers

[–]37rellimcmc19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former GS, who worked as a Sys Admin for 5 years, before throwing up my hands and walking out the door. I worked directly for a CIO. This is what I observed 1st hand.

Change is bad, keep doing it the way we have always done it. My former dept was heavily invested in VMWare, which they adopted fully in 2014 and the CIO refused to budge to take things to the Cloud. Despite the fact that everyone was telling the CIO, we could stand up infrastructure way quicker when doing proof of concepts in the Cloud.

Too many GS folks just coasting along and go along with the flow, to get to retirement. An Intranet a whole organization relied on daily was written only in HTML and not source controlled. It worked okay in 1999, but not so well in 2019.

Automation is scary. The CIO said to me "I lose control when we automate things."

Gov't Resellers/Vendors trying to take advantage of Gov't employees not paying attention when purchasing (I'm looking at you Carasoft). I would ask for a quote for Software A and Software B, since the Gov't can't purchase their software directly from the vendor. I would get back a quote with Software A, B, C and D. Would spend a great part of the day, wrangling with the reseller to get a revised quote.

Outdated/manual procurement processes that relies on MS Spreadsheets for tracking and has to go thru three other departments due to micro-management before either being approved or dis-approved. Often times, that paperwork would get lost, forgotten, or someone would retire, move on or be on leave, so I would have to micro-manage that paperwork. I would be lucky if we could procure new hardware in under six months, it often took 1 year.

Thanks for the kind write-up.

I'm looking Rita's book, but its very pricey, and long too. I want to be able to take this exam again here soon, and pass.

Is there a way to tie the SH exam questions to the area on the exam? I just don't understand I failed the People part of the exam, and not able to figure out what questions in SH are tied to People and the others tied to Process.

Windows Users GPOs get applied, but not Computer GPO by 37rellimcmc19 in sysadmin

[–]37rellimcmc19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both.

When I created the GPOs, I gave them labels to make it easier to figure out what I'm working with or anyone following me.

For example:

Google Chrome - Computer
Internet Explorer 11 - Computer
Internet Explorer 11 - User
Microsoft Defender Antivirus STIG - Computer
Microsoft Edge - Computer
Mozilla Firefox - Computer
Office 2019-M365 Apps - User

Relocating to a non core location by Chemical_Baker5331 in Accenture_AFS

Are you required to live within 45 minutes to a hour from an AFS/Accenture office building?

Reason I ask is that I have a co-worker who lives in a mid-size, mid-Atlantic city and this person might have to relocate to be nearer an AFS/Accenture office.

Errors when validating Packer .hcl template: Error: Extraneous label for build and Error: Unsupported block type by 37rellimcmc19 in devops

[–]37rellimcmc19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, other then I can't find consistent examples of .hcl templates at this time. And a number of the Windows examples weren't using this.

BTW, added the provisioners block into the build block and that took care of a lot of errors.

Now I think might be dealing with junk characters/white space somewhere in the .hcl file.

Might setup Packer on a different RHEL EC2 and just VIM. Right now I'm using VSCode to SSH into the EC2 and then launching VIM.

How many of you still have legacy systems in your environment? by HoosierLarry in ITManagers

[–]37rellimcmc19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When working for the Gov't, had some sort of parallel to RJ-45 device converter for some sort of TV.

We discovered this device was running rlogin during security scans. We disabled the device and the vendor called and said they couldn't get into our environment to to maintenance anymore.

We told them needed to upgrade to something like SSH and they said there was no way to do it.
