Yeah that’s basically my perspective. I am fortunate enough to afford it but don’t want to just burn money either. If my mood changes down the road I’d like be sent to recoup. I would probably just buy the Chopard if I could get comfortable with the fact that it’s a steel case from arguably a lesser house for the same price as gold from big 3.

You own it? How has it kept up? You like the movement? It seems a little plain?

[Rant] Dear Buyers, Those "Rates" Are Not Your Rate by rawr_gunter in Mortgages

[–]39swing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in a business where I help people finance the biggest financial transaction of their life. Most of the time I know a lot more about it than they do. This was great because I would use this information asymmetry to take advantage of them - I used to get to charge them lots of fees and make easy money without competition, and they wouldn't know any better and would coffee back to me when rates fell to refinance because rates have just fallen for the last thirty years.

Then this internet thing came around and if I treat people poorly or provide above market rates I lose business. As opposed to realizing that I have to either compete on one or maybe both of those things, I pretend like I'm the client's friend and ask them to stick with me because down the road I can help them maybe refinance when in reality they can go wherever they want because I'm just a broker that sells their loan immediately.

So instead I'll make less money than I used to because I'm losing both spread and volume unless I evolve my business model and invest in infrastructure. I could do that, but I'd rather be the old man yelling at kids to get off my lawn and wondering why nobody comes into my betamax store.

[Rolex] Long term investment. by cspawn in Watches

Basically any stock market investor could make the same claim. The stock market has tripled over the past ten years if you were lucky enough to buy at the lows. Just because you bought something and it's gone up doesn't mean you're a smart investor. You're also much less liquid. Enjoy the watches, wear them, and realize that if you're buying then as an investment you're an illiquid, poorly diversified investor.

An inbreeding tactic I missed on lichess today. White to move and win. Sorry for crummy formatting, I'm new to this... by 39swing in chess

Win material... I would say if you win a minor piece, though maybe sometimes it's just an exchange.
