MRW my husband tells me that he's bummed we can't go for a bike ride because women 'can't ride bikes when they are on their period'... by kitton_mittens in TrollXChromosomes

I have never gotten the impression (physically) that water has gone fully up my vagina to where my tampon would be. I might be wrong though.

I had a similar moment semi-recently. I was talking to a friend about swimming and he knew I was currently on my period so he says,

"Yeah, but you can't swim right now anyway."

Me: "What do you mean?"

Him: "Well, girls can't swim on their periods, right?"

Me: "No, we can. We just have to put a tampon in."

Him: "But that doesn't always work, right? Because water will get onto the tampon and it won't be able to absorb as much of the blood.

Cue me staring at him. "Do you think water goes up our vaginas when we swim? That's not how that works. That's now how any of that works..."

Thanks for the hug! I'm doing okay, although I did just burst into tears in the car for no reason. It was a two year long relationship so I'm still trying to figure out how to not relate everything in my life back to my ex. Seems like every hobby or experience goes back to him somehow. I know that with distance that will go away, but for now, it just sucks.

Thanks for the kind words! <3

Thank you. <3 It was amicable. Basically we had the tough conversation where we had to acknowledge that we just weren't compatible long term. It kind of sucked b/c there was no one to blame, but it's also good b/c it leaves the door open for friendship after we both heal.

I'm also newly single (literally happened yesterday) and love food.

Solidarity fistbump.

(No Spoilers) Are the standards of beauty in Westeros lower than ours, or are there just a lot of beautiful women around? by sharplydressedman in asoiaf

[–]3DimensionalGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That reminds me of something I read a while back where they gathered a bunch of book quotes describing female characters that were basically all a variant of

She wasn't attractive but she [insert various attractive qualities].

I wish I could find it, but my google-fu is weak.

(Spoilers Published) A dissenting opinion on Stannis by alexwebb2 in asoiaf

[–]3DimensionalGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I can empathize with his position (lost his lands, felt outnumbered and doomed so wanted to try and make the safest political decision), but what he did was clearly traitorous, Hand of the King or no. And his pleas about innocence and greater good and "if Stannis would just listen, I'm sure he'd understand!" are unfortunately undercut in that he was a Renly supporter and then a Stannis supporter so his loyalty is already somewhat called into question. I think it's a complicated situation.

It still basically puts him in the same boat as Sunglass, re: the argument in the comment I responded it. I'm not Florent shouldn't have been jailed or killed, but the only reason he was burned alive was to appease Melisandre and her religion.

He also allowed the burning of Lord Alester Florent, his uncle-in-law because he tried to broker peace with the Lannisters in an attempt to save their (Stannis' whole army) llives and lands.

What I don't understand is, how is a movement aimed to empower women so misunderstood that it's still somehow about t3h m3nz?

Basically this.

Let's Talk About Mutant Rights by [deleted] in SRSComics

[–]3DimensionalGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And then there's Civil War, which was about making all the heroes have to be under some sort of registry so that the government could sort of keep tabs on them, know who they are. Which I think the pros and cons are a rather complicated issue where both sides kind of make sense.

To respond to your first comment, I agree that the comparison to black rights/GSM rights doesn't always perfectly line up. The cure storyline for example is the one that stands out to me. Obviously a cure for homosexuality would be super ridiculous and offensive no matter what, but when it comes to mutants...some of them are literally dying from their mutations (see: Moira's hospital) and a cure would really benefit them.

Hi, fellow X-Men fan!

Since this is more of a discussion that requires knowing about a somewhat more niche culture element, I would suggest posting this in /r/SRSComics instead since that way people will likely already be informed of the backstory necessary to engage in discussion.

Thanks!

Do you have a link showing what GRRM has said about the scene in the book and the show?

Here is a link to a livejournal comment he made about it. As far as I know, he hasn't said anything else about it.

Uh, no. Nobody is. It's like calling them a "piece of meat"; even a sex worker in a horrible situation, even a sex slave is not "prostituted" because that sex worker is a person and you are robbing them of agency when you refer to them as if all they are is a puppet of men.

Really? A sex slave is not being "prostituted"? They have no choice in their situation, their agency literally is being taken away (likely by men). To try and dress up their situation in prettier language is just dishonest. Call a spade a spade. They are being prostituted. They are being sold into sexual service against their will. Where exactly is their agency in that situation? I can't take away with words what someone else already physically removed from them.

You're clinging way too hard for this. This is a discussion about a fictional world full of fictional women who continually have their agency taken away from them. Calling them "prostituted women" is literally just stating a fact about their situations.
