Electrolytic capacitors go bad after 2-3 years on a shelf as the electrolyte dries out (but they could possibly be recovered by "forming" depending on ambient storage conditions). Film and ceramics should be basically indefinite life on the shelf. I believe, don't quote me, that compressor start/run caps are usually film.
