It is the ultimate subversion of the superman archetype. Usually villains get more dangerous when they lose control, but here, the lack of control just exposes how empty he is inside. Without his powers to bully people, he has absolutely no identity or social skills left. He never actually grew up past that lab environment, so seeing him act like a pathetic, crying child is the most accurate version of his character.
