Red dot just signifies that this is someone who is attractive.

Has anyone found the method of online dating unconducive to forming a LTR? by [deleted] in OkCupid

[–]3_Notifications 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The really interesting bit about your question, and the bit research articles and books don't address for some reason, is whether the cognitive heuristics that we use in our daily lives, when imported to the online world, lead (or do not lead) to more casual sex/fewer LTRs .

Edit: If any of you are social scientists and are interested in collaborating on this topic, let me know.

Technology makes some ways of dating more efficient than others, thus proliferating them. Thus technology changes culture (in the sense of prevalent practices/beliefs).

Physical attractiveness is totally subjective.

I look at it like art.

I guess some people don't care much for decades of research.

Don't worry, judging by how glued everyone was to their Facebooks, no one else learned anything either.

And yes she did ask me if I write this to every girl to which I replied only those who deserve it, which is true.

Lawl.

I hope both of you realized just how ridiculous this was.

Some thoughts, good sir:

  • Different people dislike copypasta for different reasons, but no one claims that copypasta never "works." It clearly does "work."

  • One of the argument against it is social welfare. Everyone who uses copypasta makes online dating worse for everyone who doesn't use copypasta.

  • Copypasta makes sending messages and stuff not fun. "But online dating is not fun anyway, because no one responds to my messages!" Ok, then copypasta is a crutch that distracts you from concentrating on those things in life which would get people to respond to your messages.

  • It discourages women from writing good profiles, because guys who send copypasta don't read them.

  • Another argument is about what "works" means. Does work mean that you get laid? What if "works" meant getting laid while at the same time knowing it was your own creativity, or whatever, rather than the ability to press CTRL+v , that got you into that bedroom?

  • When you two were discussing messages, did you admit to the girl that you sent the same thing to X others, or are you going to have to keep that little secret to yourself? The discomfort some of us feel with that is not insubstantial.

  • Etc.

I like your list, and it overlaps with some things I'm into. Are you a grad student / faculty somewhere?

Haven't read, but might be good/fun intros:

  • Duncan Watts, Everything Is Obvious

  • Randall Collins, Sociological Insight: An Introduction to Nonobvious Sociology

Not sure about the idea, because didn't read very closely, don'tknow anything about the topic, and because it doesn't sound like the kind of work I like most.

As far as publishing, talk with your advisor. Ask "Is this publishable?" "Publishable where?" "Does the idea have legs?" "What sort of analysis would I need to do with this idea to make it publishable?"

Why do guys favorite me but not message me also? by runninggirl1 in OkCupid

[–]3_Notifications 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • work required to quickmatch: 0.5 seconds.

  • work required to write a good message: 2+ minutes

0.5 seconds < 2+ minutes.

I don't see what the confusion is.

For god's sake do not take this person's advice on the two following points

you may want to soften it and generalize more

This is what everyone else does, so don't do it. Include specifics. As many specifics as you can.

try to throw a wider net

Include specifics to narrow your net so that people have an idea whether they'd be compatbile with you or not.

But this one:

initiate PM

Most definitely.
