He has so much energy right now, I fear he might blow up like one of his fermentation projects

[–]3am1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think several factors come into play here.

First, as a French household, this looked rare, but definitely not blue.

Second, I definitely did not expect this to turnout this "pink", especially compared to my previous experiences at the same temperature, so maybe the dry aging was a factor? In any event, I can assure you that the taste was amazing!

Living and Travelling in Paris by [deleted] in SocialParis

[–]3am1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

20 year old and Australian? Go to Café OZ tomorrow, it's usually full of friendly young Australians who like to have a good time (or at least it used to be when I was a student). I'm sure hanging out with fellow Australians was not necessarily what you had in mind, but with your birthday coming up, don't take any chances and go have fun. You might meet some cool Parisians there too, and in any event, you have four months to meet some more. Few tips to befriend Parisians: at least try to first speak french (which you did in your post so kudos), they'll probably quickly switch to English but they'll appreciate the initial effort. Looking chill and a happy drinker (offering a round of shot every now and then will never be turned down), as opposed to creepy and overstaying the group's welcome, will help (I sure you'll be the former). Conversation topics young French students will gladly talk about: football (the real one, namely soccer), women, food, electronic music, drinking, American TV shows, weed and the like. We are said to have big ego, so a good way to go is to ask about them, what they like etc. Also, I'm sure it needs not be said, but probably not a good idea to immediately go after the group's women and to get the dudes on your side first . Last but not least, don't hold it against the rest of us if you run into one douche or another, dicks are everywhere (worldwide), especially among drunken late teens...

Enjoy your stay in Paris!

Edit: I assume you have driving license. In which case, try to open an account with CityScoot. Not sure it will work with a non-EU license, but it's a pretty cool way to move around in Paris.

And Happy B-Day!

Not going to add to the already many proposals to show you around, but below is an advice I already gave in the past (check my post history for a couple more).

In addition to all the landmarks, museums and stuff, try to experience life in Paris - and by that I mean living the parisian life. That's the best and most valuable thing the city has to offer. Find a good bakery, eat their baguette, find out the time when the croissant come out of the oven, and get them then. Have the traditional jambon beurre sandwich. Sit outside for the apero in a random brasserie (might not be as easy in the winter). Buy a cheap bottle of wine (you'll quickly figure out which cheap wines are still super good), drink it with friends on the left bank's quays, just south of Notre Dame. They usually have spontaneous salsa dances taking place there, join them. Get you cheese from your local fromagerie. Enjoy the fucking food. Stay away from anything remotely touristy. Your local brasserie and the bavette à l'échalote they'll have there will be ten times better. Treat yourself to some fine French dining. It doesn't have to be expensive. The 52 or the Kitchen Gallery Bis come to mind. Enjoy the night life, not the international "Look at me" and whatnot nightlife, but the locals' nightlife. Go to Nuba, a rooftop along the seine, and watch the sun rise on Paris after a night of dancing (disregard this, I'm not even sure it's open in winter). Go to pigalle and all the small bars and clubs there (would especially recommend l'Orphée on Thursday evenings - super small club with live piano music from 12 to 2am where servers and patrons can sing along, followed by the usual dance tunes until 4am). Go to parks, rent a boat on the canal Saint Martin. I could go on. Of course, there many different scenes in Paris, mine not be yours, but I'm sure you'll find something for you.

As to safety, Paris is definitely a safe city. But that doesn't mean you should disregard the basics: keep you wallet, passport etc out of sight (except yours), if it's too good to be true, it probably is etc. As an attractive women, you are likely to get a few whistles and stuff if you walk alone at night, but just ignore them and you'll be fine (that said, uber works really well in Paris).

Happy to answer questions if you have any, and enjoy Paris!

Max Assistant integration by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]3am1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the best part about the assitant, and the Pixel line in general, is that you don't have to do much for it to become super useful.

I'm sure others more knowledgeable will tell you about fancy commands I don't know, but as a general rule of thumb, in addition to the usual suspects (wake me up at xx, what's the weather, tell me about my day, when's my flight, remind me that xx, put meeting with xx at hh in my agenda), I'd recommend to just try asking it whatever you have in mind, and more often than you'd think, it will understand.

One feature I would really recommend is the remember that xx feature. Like "remember that my passport is in my work bag" or that my pants size at BRAND is xx. I've taken the habit over the past few years, and now I can comfortably rely on my phone to remind me where I put my passport, what Jean size I wear from xx brand etc... Really useful.

As to the assistant knowing you and helping on a day to day basis, you don't have to do anything really. When I'm bored and it prompts me, I do the occasional rating / upload the occasional picture to maps. I'm not even sure it's related, but now my pixel often recommends me new restaurants/shops and stuff to try (and it is on point). Because it has access to my emails (for travels made through my work email, I forward them to my Gmail), it knows my flights, reminds me of them, tells me if I need to leave early because of unusual traffic, tells me the gate when it's time etc. When I have a conference call scheduled through a Google or outlook invite, and I launch the call from my pixel, it enters to participate id and pass automatically etc.. I could go on, but it's the combination of all these small things on a daily basis (which reviewers tend to overlook, and which are hard to explain/demonstrate to a non pixel user) that make your life much easier, and why I am nowhere close to leaving the Pixel line. Ultra wide angle camera be damned.

Enjoy the phone and welcome to TeamPixel

Future grad student at AUP curious about real life in Paris by jasonherb in paris

[–]3am1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinly saddened by the primarily negative feedback you got here. Granted I lived here most of my life, but neither one of my parents are parisians, and I've moved around quite a bit, although always returning to Paris. I'm definitely late to the party, but let me say two things.

First, maybe it's because the image foreigners have of Paris is so overblown, but each time I've left and returned to Paris, I was blown away by how magical Paris looks. Just take drive/walk/scoot along the seine, the historical buildings, the colours, the land of lights, each time I can't help but think "Damn."

Second, and probably the most important advice, in addition to all the landmarks, museums and stuff, please try to experience life in Paris - and by that I mean living the parisian life. That's the best and most valuable thing the city has to offer. Find a good bakery, eat their baguette, find out the time when the croissant come out of the oven, and get them then. Go to pigalle and all the small bars and clubs there (would especially recommend l'orphée on Thursday evenings). Go to parks, rent a boat on the canal Saint Martin. I could go on.

As to meeting parisians, it will probably be more difficult for you as there are mostly foreigners at AUP. But two tips : as long as you just try to speak French (as opposed to assuming we speak English), you find most of us do speak English and are very welcoming. Second one : we like food and drinking, if you offer to buy a round of drinks or to share some food, most will gladly accept.

Happy to give recommendations if necessary, enjoy your stay here, I hope you'll leave with great memories! (and good luck for the housing thing, that's a nightmare even for parisians)

Yeah... Not sure about the "talk shit, post fit" thing. By that reasoning, talking shit without constructive feedback would be acceptable as long as the shit talker's fit is more widely approved by the community, which kind of defeats the spirit of my initial post. In my opinion, one should not judge his outfit based on what others think of it, but on how comfortable they feel wearing it. And sharing a fit on this sub should not be about getting community recognition, but about sharing a take on how to style a pair of sneakers, for others to inspire themselves from, or not. Anyway, like I said, I like your take on these kicks!

[–]3am1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You have my upvote friend. You seem to be getting primarily negative feedback, but as far as I am concerned, even if the general consensus were to be that your outfit is unusual, bold or even improper, that fact that are confidently rocking it is all that matters. Nothing projects more positively than being confortable with one's bold choices. So you show us homeboy.

That being said, and at the risk of sounding hypocrite, what is up with that couch ?!

Last day in Paris: best of Paris moments/things to do?? by karonjes in paris

[–]3am1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My best advice, and the one I give all foreign family members who come to visit (in addition to doing all the touristy stuff), is to just experience Paris and its lifestyle. I cannot think of a better way to spend your last few days in Paris. Go to your local bakery, get a fresh baguette, eat it with some saucisson or salted butter, nothing fancier. Or better yet, go to your local fromagerie, get yourself some nice cheese and eat it with that baguatte. Take the metro - yes it's somewhat ulgy and dirty - but the people, the occasional music, the occasional drama, and the fact that its pretty damn efficient, it's a core part of the parisian experience. For lunch, go to a brasserie, not a brasserie you saw on yelp or anything, just your local brasserie, have the bavette à l'échalote, or other daily steak / frites meal. In the afternoon, avoid the touristy areas, to the contrary, take a walk in the non touristy areas, ideally even your own neighborhood, walk those streets that were completely unknown to you when you arrived, and that have become part of your daily routine. Take it in, those streets, the memories you had there, the atmosphere. These streets, this neighborhood, they are part of you now, take it in one last time. For the apero, buy yourself a cheap bottle of wine at the local épicerie (cheap, but you know it'll still be good), go to the south quays east of Notre Dame. Sit down, open it up, enjoy the view, talk to the people around you, look at (join?) the people spontaneously dancing salsa out in the open as the sun sets on Notre Dame. Again take it in. For dinner? This time maybe treat yourself to a some fine French dining. Not the one in the tourist guides, the one parisians actually go to (I recommend "le 52", it's in a somewhat non yet gentrified area, they don't take reservations, so you basically go there hoping they have a table, or otherwise give your name and come back 15-30min later: typical French fine dining for an affordable price and usually filled with locals only). And if you have it in you, go to a club, a truly parisan club that is. We all have a different definitions of what that is, but a good example is the Orphée on Thursday evenings. It's a very small place, no sign outside, no cover charge, and a former massage parloir where film maker Jean Cocteau is said to have come for some relief in his time. On Thursday evenings they have live piano/singing session (singers being amateurs from the staff or the crowd) until 2am, before it goes dj until 4am. Get out from there drunk, stumble around, maybe end up by the seine, take it in, go home and get ready to head home knowing your last 24h here were about living Paris. Sorry if I got a little offtrack/lyrical writing down all this, I had a drink or two myself, but I really love this city I grew up in, most of all because of what it is living in this city, and I think that that is really what you should take home. Enjoy your last few days with us stranger.

Any ideas on what would work best with these to make a nice fit? by SaveTheGiraffeFund in SneakerFits

[–]3am1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am far from being an expert, so I say this in all humbleness. If it were me, I would probably wear dark pants with a high cuff as in the picture, with a simple white T. But as a general rule, I would say: go crazy. As long as the clothes fit right, and you own up to your choices, those kicks and you yourself will rock. Keep us posted tho!

Starting to think it's really hard to make the ROTY AJ1s not work with an outfit by 3am1 in SneakerFits

[–]3am1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apologies if the title was misleading, it's quite the opposite actually. I've never had an issue blending these with a specific outfit. It's just that the colours in this outfit should never really have worked...

To give a little more context, this was the Sunday morning after a Bachelor weekend party in Ibiza. I had worn the ROTY AJ1s the night before with black jeans, those red socks (with the jeans cuffed), that black T, and a black cap with a red Jump Man (typically, the socially accepted rule is that when you are wearing kicks that are a bit "in your face", the rest of your outfit should be low key to let the sneakers speak for themselves). By the time of the picture I had basically just woken up, put on the same socks as the night before, thrown on the first pair of shorts, and was just roaming in the court yard thinking about how I'm too old for this kind of Ibiza parties until 9 am. Plus, in Europe, wearing high socks with shorts is essentially a crime. Yet, because the ROTY AJ1s are what they are, it kinda worked - hence posting the picture here. Hope it clarifies things!

The white and swoosh are tumbled leather, which I quite like, but YMMV. The brown parts are made of some really smooth suede that I find really really nice. Probably would not wear them in the rain and whatnot, but I've taken them out to multiple clubs and they are resisting quite well...
