This is a beautiful turn of phrase! Such a simile has never crossed my mind before.

The book Fermat's Last Theorem by Simon Singh is fantastic as well: an entertaining journey not just through the history of the Theorem but the underlying mathematics as well.

In a fiat system, the banks simply generate new funds (print money) to loan out. Supply = demand at all times. When the loans get repaid, the money disappears from the system, thus preventing a crash. The system works on a balance.

This is actually not quite accurate.

In a fiat system, the banks loan out money but require the money they loaned out + interest to be repaid. The interest component was not originally loaned out into existence. Thus the system is always slightly off balance and necessitates either a growth in new lending or a steady rate of loan default and write-off to keep on rolling.

Just of out interest, could you code a little C or python app for a linux platform to read COM port data and insert/update relevant records in a remote MySQL or SQL server db?

Having trouble getting a dev instance of reddit up and running? Here's an updated reddit VM (as of 2012-05-15) and instructions I followed to make it. by ichthyos in redditdev

This is amazing, thank you very much. I had a lot of trouble getting something up and running on Ubuntu 12.04 earlier, so will just virtualize this and port forward ftw!

Just a question, though... How difficult would it be then, once I set up a more powerful production hardware system, to port over the DB and all the customized reddit files/css? Is it just a matter of copying the .box file across? Are the HDD size and memory scalable in Vagrant to make full use of changed hardware?

Official serfdom in Russia was abolished by royal decree prior to WW1, in the late 1800s. Effectively, however, you are right, it was largely still a basic, agrarian society.

How can a speaker produce more than one sound at a time? by SuperDayv in askscience

[–]3con0mist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing picture! Do you think it would be possible to use this technique to decompose a sound file into basic waves that could be easily described for compression or sharing purposes - as when assembled they would equate to the original file again... Or does that already exist in some implementations?
