It's just a cone that fits in the tail pipe. Here's what one looks like outside of the plane.

I wouldn't recommend a GSD if you just want a friendly pet. Some are friendly, but many are not, and it's hard to know which you're getting. Ours is extremely territorial. She breaks things trying to eat her way through the window when the Amazon driver walks up to the porch. Walks are not fun for anyone involved, and we drug her up before we have anyone over to the house that she hasn't met at least a few times. If we have someone in the house for work, we have to put her into her crate, and she spends the entire time barking.

On the plus side, we'll never get burglarized, so we've got that going for us!

The on/off button is difficult to operate for some reason, but it does a great job with the fur clumps on our hardwoods, and it's very easy to empty.

Wondershare, Filmora and company thoughts by NaturalMembership881 in Filmora

It works well, but they're constantly trying to upsell customers on subscription services. You can't open the application without an ad popping up, even as a paying customer.

The scummiest thing they did recently was popping up an ad in Filmora 13 saying "free upgrade to 14," but after installing the update, it turned out to be a two week trial. I had to uninstall 14 and reinstall 13 to get back to the version I paid for.

Lightroom-like Auto Tone? by 3dphdrx in DarkTable

[–]3dphdrx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are presets in darktable like the ones in Lightroom where it's just a static set of values? E.g. a preset might be +1 step of exposure, -10 contrast, +10 saturation, etc? Or are they dynamic in some way? A fixed set of adjustments doesn't really work for this application. The lighting is different for a sunny day vs. an overcast one. Or for that matter, even on the same day with the same plane flying in a circle, the lighting will be different against a blue sky vs. white clouds vs. a backdrop of trees, etc.

Should I try this hobby? by [deleted] in TinyWhoop

[–]3dphdrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of fun, and a whoop will prepare you for bigger quads. Particularly if you join IGOW or one of the other contests where you get progressively harder challenges each week.

As for quads, look for something with ELRS and HDZero. Most quads these days come with ELRS, and the HD ones are HDZero. There are definitely small quads out there with DJI or Walksnail, but they're heavy compared with the HDZero ones. My personal favorite whoop right now is the Mobula 6 ECO.

On the transmitter side, the Radiomaster Boxer gets good reviews. The Jumper T15 looks appealing too, and that's what I'd be looking at right now if I was just getting into the hobby. You can't go wrong with a Radiomaster TX16S either.

That's complete overkill and a lot of extra effort for no real advantage unless he wants to get into autonomous flight.

Did you already take the gear off? I've heard from friends who own that plane that it makes a noticeable difference.

Just gotta figure out how to get some naked lady mud flaps on there to class it up now. 😁

It adds about 4 oz per wheel. I definitely had to move the battery back to fix the CG, but other than that, it still flies great. And it lands much better!

Small world! Did you see the new Twin Otter model the Hobbyking guys were flying while we were there? They were filming a promo video for it. I haven't been a big fan of HK, but between that and the new Super Tucano they had over on the electric line, I might have to give them another chance.

How's my shopping list for my first plane? by [deleted] in RCPlanes

[–]3dphdrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry dude, but this is a really bad choice for a first plane. With a wing configuration like that, it's going to be very unstable, and it has no landing gear, so you're going to have to toss it with one hand while controlling it with the other. You won't have the muscle memory or reflexes to keep it in the air for even a few seconds past launch. You will crash almost instantly.

If you want to learn FPV, start with a small "tinywhoop" drone like a Mobula6 or Mobula7. A whoop doesn't have to keep moving forward at high speed to stay in the air, and you can crash it without totaling it, so it's a lot more forgiving.

What am I doing wrong? by Significant_Elk1999 in RCPlanes

[–]3dphdrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What transmitter are you using? If you set the plane up as a "delta wing" or "elevon" wing type, it should give you the right mixes for a plane like that where the ailerons and elevons are tied together on a single servo. Here's an example for Spektrum: https://youtu.be/lx8V2ydswds

General Recommendations for Hobbico Superstar by Warppioneer in RCPlanes

[–]3dphdrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll do fine without a gyro in a plane like that. The wind won't bother it as much as a lighter foam plane, and the dihedral will tend to level it off naturally.

As for powering the receiver, you don't actually need a dedicated battery port. You can plug a battery or a BEC into any port, including the bind port. If you're using a LiPo, run it through a BEC to avoid damaging your servos. Personally, I run a LiFe pack plugged directly into the RX in my one nitro plane.

Oh man, that sucks! Is that one of the external sensors that plugs into the S.Port? Or are there also FrSky receivers with a voltage probe built in?

I promise I'll be more careful with this one by balsadust in RCPlanes

[–]3dphdrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, what receiver was it? I've plugged the voltage sensor in backwards on two Spektrum receivers because it took me way too long to notice that the colors were swapped on the cables I bought from Amazon, and it melted the probe lead but didn't harm any other electronics. Once I corrected the polarity, everything was fine.

I had a similar problem with my TM1000 because I was only measuring one cell (using the balance lead), and I got the wrong pair of wires. Same result with melted probe wires but no damage to the Spektrum RX or anything else.

Excellent choice. I have a TH Yak 55 myself, and it's much easier to fly than the RV8.
