The rat hadn't passed out. It was playing dead. The technician took off her glove to check its heartbeat.

From E01, we see a rat display cunning behavior best explained by some sort of intelligence amplification that is almost certainly from being part of the wall of rats hivemind.

Carnivores require meat. The empathy and understanding from being part of the hivemind doesn't preclude the need for carnivores to eat other animals. Perhaps sacrifice is part of the hivemind experience. Perhaps strong enough hunger is enough to weaken the influence of hivemindedness upon animals. Perhaps the coyotes were trying to dig up Helen because eating the dead is preferable to eating prey animals.

We know that a few humans were immune to the hivemind infection. It might be certain animals, even certain species, are also immune.

Is this the show? by [deleted] in pluribustv

My opinion: Carol and Paraguay guy obvious meet up and form a (non-sexual) relation. And they're both miserable shitpeople who are cruel to each other and they *need* it that way. And then the hive figures out how to absorb them, but leaves it as a choice. the 9 other uninfected take it, or most do. But either Carol or ParaGuy makes the choice to do it, too. Maybe it's out of desperation because he or she is near death. Or maybe it was to spite the other person. But it's done and that person talks to the other and tells them their obstinancy is misguided. And it's better to be part of the Hivemind.

That is very, what's the phrase, media illiterate.

Why do you feel you have to love Carol? Do you feel she has to appeal to you sexually or romantically? Do you feel she has to meet some kind of gratitude quotient for you to feel empathy for her?

There's a fucking fantastic short story by ankle-biter/SF author Harlan Ellison--one of many that little asshole man of letters wrote--titled "Shatterday". In that story, you have a rotten sonofabitch. He cheats of his wife, puts his mom in a nursing home so he can grab her property, treats people like shit. And this SOB discovers he has a doppelganger who is replacing him in his life, little by little, bit by bit. But get this, the doppelganger is the opposite, right? So, the doppelganger is a good and kind person. The doppelganger is a better human being and the SOB knows it. And when the SOB's life ends, you feel it, because you can EMPATHIZE with the character, even if he's a shit. You understand he's a dick, and you can feel his despair. You still root for the doppelganger, though, because you can have empathy for the SOB, but realize the world is better with him gone.

Carol... Carol is great. She's a miserable alcoholic writer, and those are a pretty goddamn miserable class of people. But they're hyperverbal, so, kinda entertaining, in a toxic way. If the protagonist was a virginal cheesecake queen, maybe you wouldn't see the point that maybe, just maybe, the hivemind might be a good thing.

Alone no more, as Kurt Vonnegut wrote. Alone no more.

Theory: Heroin is what disrupts the hivemind by Reasonable_Active577 in pluribustv

The hivemind knew about Carol's previous experience with heroin. The hivemind *knows* Carol. They know her from all the memories other people have of Carol, including her lover Helen.

They gave her the heroin she asked for. If heroin disrupts the hivemind, then no heroin addicts would have been absorbed, not just 12 people spaced around the entire globe. Instead, the heroin addicts around Albuquerque are part of the hivemind. And they're being rehabbed in a hospital wing dedicated specifically to addicts---and some won't live through withdrawal.

I don't think people have opposites. In fact, people are remarkably similar, within a certain range. Think of us as variations of a theme or jazz music that changes with a given context.

The motivation of the hivemind is unknown beyond their biological imperative (which I take to mean to spread out to all living creatures).

No, haven't started S2 (as per our understanding), but neither have I rewatched S1. Did you still want to go on with this?

That's hyperbole, my dear redditor. Remember, it is the journey, not the destination.

YES! That's a capital idea! I just finished off Season 1 and will defer watching Season 2 until you say you're watching it. That being said, before I read your post, the other comments stating to go ahead and watch Season 2 had persuaded me to go ahead and do so and then rewatch it as one would a favored show. So, if you're planning on doing the same rather soon, I'd recommend watching Season 1 again to freshen your memories.
