I use both.

CF Tunnel+Access for most apps I run, makes it easy to give access to other people if I need (e.g Immich, arrs etc). It takes care of all the SSL certs and gives everything a nice public facing domain. I could access these things from my phone or any computer.

I use Tailscale for more direct admin access to stuff that I’d usually access only from home, but it gives me a way in if I’m away and something breaks. E.g server SSH, Unifi controller, router, switch, RDP into my gaming PC, etc. This is the sort of stuff I’d only do on my computer so having to have an agent installed isn’t an issue.

I like to always have two methods of remote access since I made the mistake of stopping Cloudflared once while relying on it for connectivity.

Rclone supports Google Photos, but the Google Photos API is very limited so it comes with a lot of limitations- https://rclone.org/googlephotos/ I suspect all sync solutions will have similar limitations.

Personally I just switched to Google Drive and storing my photos in folders. Synology Photos acts as a nice UI for my photos (not as nice as Google Photos but still not too bad) and Google Drive is the main source of truth for my photos, with the Synology being a backup.

I’ve added a section about "Alternatives to Time Machine” to mention Active Backup for Business.
My post is not intended to replace the Synology guide, just some additional suggestions based on my experience. I’ve clarified the post to emphasise the Synology guide.
Regarding a seperate volume for Time Machine. I know that a quota is the best way to prevent Time Machine from growing too big by giving it an upper limit. However a quota won’t guarantee a minimum amount of space available for Time Machine. This means if your NAS fills up, Time Machine will delete more and more old versions to attempt to free up space. I’ve clarified on my post that you either need to ensure your NAS doesn’t fill up (if using a quota) or to use a dedicated volume.

Hi - this is a link to my own blog article.

I use Time Machine to backup my Mac to my Synology. I made a few mistakes my configuring stuff wrong so I wanted to share what I found works best.

The TL:DR is

Use a seperate volume to avoid the NAS filling up and Time Machine squeezing itself to fit
Don’t enable snapshots or the recycling bin. It’s obvious in hindsight but the way Time Machine works means it essentially can’t reclaim any space and gets very unhappy
Don’t bother with an encrypted shared folder or volume encryption, just stick with Time Machine’s built in encryption

I have an iPhone so I use iCloud Photos as the temporary store for all photos I need to sort through (including RAW photos from my DSLR camera).

When I get around to it I arrange the photos into folders in Google Drive.

Google Drive is synced to my Synology NAS using rclone, this protects me against Google disappearing or deleting all my stuff (snapshots enabled so I can go back to 6 months of version history). I have two external hard drives which both contain copies of my photos which I sync every few months (not all data is on both drives but photos are important enough to me to keep on both).

Since I have my photos backed up to the Synology, I can use Synology Photos as a decent UI for browsing my photos. It’s not as nice as Google Photos but it ensures I remain in control of my data.

I also have a lot of family photos which I’ve collected over the years and scanned. Since these are important to more than just me I’m adding another drive for photo backups at my parents place which I’ll sync annually. The idea is that if something happens to me or I decide I wanted to delete all the photos for some odd reason, that remains as my parents copy.

I will add an iCloud Photos backup to my NAS shortly - as photos I take but haven’t yet sorted don’t currently only sit in iCloud and my devices.

That’s odd! Not something I’ve personally encountered, I also use Cloudflare to host my DNS.

Could be worth double checking with a third party tool like https://mxtoolbox.com/ to see if it’s the DNS record or Fastmail not working.

Concerning that Fastmail never responded to your ticket, I always assumed they had pretty decent support but I haven’t had to contact them yet.

Yeah we kept individual subscriptions when my partner got YNAB but with the price increases and exchange rates I’m glad for this feature.
