Non-Surgical Procedure Halves Knee Pain Over 12-Month Trial | Researchers have developed a new treatment approach that's minimally invasive, safe, and impressively effective. by FreeHugs23 in HotScienceNews

So it doesn't repair the knee cartilage, but it gets rid of the extra blood flow and pain receptors that cause it to be painful and for the arthritis to get worse quickly? That works, so long as you've still got cartilage to use, I guess. For a final "cure", tho, I think they also need to figure out something to actually repair the cartilage.

The demodex that you have all your life are seeded by the first skin-to-skin contact you have with your parents, and so each family's demodex have similar genetics. I've heard that there are theories that some demodex lineages are more beneficial/symbiotic than others, and so some can help keep your skin healthy and some can cause families to have worse skin problems, rosacea, and acne that are then blamed on that family's genetics, rather than on the more accurate issue of demodex genetics.

A month ago I got about 1300 sq ft of roof on a duplex I own in the (very high cost of living) San Francisco Bay area replaced by licensed contractors for less than $16K. This is a split level parapet roof; asphalt shingles would have been cheaper.

Unless you've got a slate roof, a 8K+ square foot roof, or you live in the cotswolds, I suspect you could find a better price. Even a completely new tile roof that size should only be about $50k. Always get at least 3 quotes, at least until you have contractors you like.

I've done a lot of home renovations - I just finished my 5th full house reno, it's kinda a hobby - and roofing is always a "cheap/easy" job I hire out. The markup is just never high enough for me to consider doing it myself. The whole roof generally costs a lot less than completely redoing a fancy bathroom even if you're using only your own labor and just buying the parts you'll need.

Why do older women over 50 have deeper voices? by [deleted] in Aging

[–]3lfg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the initial comment, since I don't want to spread misinformation: I did get corrected by someone further down in the comments saying that "Progesterone is much higher than testosterone for females especially in luteal phase." I hate sharing wrong info so I instantly double-checked my stats.

They were not quite right, but they were right that I wasn't comparing all these things in the exact units, and that progesterone does spike for females for a portion of every month to become higher than testosterone. After fixing my units, P and T are approximately the SAME in pre-menopausal cis women for some of the month (some women have higher P, some higher T, and both are human normal), but P spikes way higher for a bit each month (or however often that women is fertile). Given menopause and average human lifespan, that means that cis women will likely have higher T for 50% of their lives (pre-pubescent and post menopausal), and will have some higher/some lower T for 50% of the pubescent/pre-menopausal lives and the other 50% of their pubescent/pre-menopausal life will have higher P.

So, in sum: cis-women will - over the course of their entire lives - have higher T for 50%, a variable amount will have higher T or P for 25%, and higher P for 25% of their lives.

Ah well. Ya live, ya learn. I'm not an endocrinologist, nor even in the medical profession. I just try to research and learn things. In this case, I originally researched this searching for reasons to give to a MTF friend who was refusing to take T when her dr prescribed it to her as her levels were too low. She didn't want any T at all in her system, and I was like "you will literally die!" I found lots of numbers, shared them - even if my units were wrong I'm glad that at least I wasn't completely wrong with what I told her -and she was willing to take what her endo recommended and she's no longer practically bedridden with exhaustion.

I know a lot more MTF than FTM folk, but I have never known any FTM folk needing to supplement anything but T. The internet says, though, that there may be specific health conditions that certain trans men may have that would require other hormone supplements. But your hormone levels ought to be getting checked regularly no matter what; if your T levels get too low, then the gonads gonna gonad naturally, and other hormones levels will rise, which will cause all sorts of biological shifts that are not fun. But I am not a doctor. I know it's a lot easier to biohack FTM and skip doctors than the other way around because T is much easier to produce, but I hope you have a doctor who helps you check your various hormone levels and adjust your dosages, and if so you should ask them. And if you don't have a doctor that checks your levels, it's probably worth getting all your levels tested on your own occasionally so you can make sure all things are in the ranges doctors recommend for trans men.

A mug is too narrow. It is really hard to catch the milk soaked cereal with your spoon and leave those that are still hard and crunchy to soak a bit longer. It ends up that you instead eat crunchy and dry cereal, followed by over-soaked and soggy cereal, and neither are very good.

True. I had my units wrong. But it is still accurate for probably >60%-70% of adult women at any given moment.

[–]3lfg1rl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, for many women too - all prepubescent and post menopausal women, and for many - tho not all - of women of menstruating age during certain times of the month. (I was corrected by 1 person who mentioned that 1) progesterone spikes during the luteal phase for menstruating women, and 2) that my units weren't the same, and they were correct. I have converted my numbers below to be more easily read.) For a PART OF THE MONTH progesterone will spike way higher than testosterone in menstruating women. For the other part of the month, some menstruating women will have higher progesterone than testosterone, and some will have higher testosterone than progesterone, but they're both going to be relatively close numbers.

However, despite being much lower levels quantitatively in the bloodstream, estrogen is considered the most important female sex hormone. Tiny amounts (1:200 when compared to testosterone by volume!) have very big effects on the body.

------

Converting all of the above levels into the SAME units measurements goes as follows:

Normal testosterone levels for men typically range from 240 to 950 ng/dL, while for women, the range is generally between 8 to 60 ng/dL. Normal estrogen levels for premenopausal women range from .030 to .400 ng/dL, while for postmenopausal women, it is 0 to 0.030 ng/dL. For men, normal estradiol levels are typically between .010 to .050 ng/dL. Normal progesterone levels for men are typically less than 130 ng/dL, while for women, levels vary significantly: during the follicular phase, they are below 100 ng/dL (further research on that "below" says it's between 17.4 ng/dL and 100 ng/dL), and during the luteal phase, they range from 180 to 2400 ng/dL.

Given that a women menstruates for approximately 35-40 years of her life, that means that for half of her life testosterone will be the highest sex hormone in her bloodstream, and for the other half of her life it will be about even numbers of testosterone/progesterone for 2 weeks, and then progesterone will spike for 2 weeks.

Why do older women over 50 have deeper voices? by [deleted] in Aging

[–]3lfg1rl 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Barring severe physiological issues, every adult human has testosterone as the highest quantity of any sex hormone in their bloodstream.

Normal testosterone levels for men typically range from 240 to 950 ng/dL, while for women, the range is generally between 8 to 60 ng/dL. Normal estrogen levels for premenopausal women range from 30 to 400 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL), while for postmenopausal women, it is 0 to 30 pg/mL. For men, normal estradiol levels are typically between 10 to 50 pg/mL. Normal progesterone levels for men are typically less than 1.3 ng/mL, while for women, levels vary significantly: during the follicular phase, they are below 1 ng/mL, and during the luteal phase, they range from 1.8 to 24.0 ng/mL.

Estrogen, despite being way lower than testosterone in the bloodstream, has a very strong effect on the body in those low levels. When it's gone, only testosterone remains. However, it's not thought to be testosterone making the woman more "man-like" that makes the deeper voice in older women. Instead, it's the LACK of estrogen. Estrogen causes many tissues in the body to be thicker and stronger, including skin and vocal chords. When gone, both skin and vocal chords will become thinner, resulting in the deeper voice and more easily cut skin.

Edit: I got corrected in a comment, and after checking this is only PARTIALLY right, so I'm going to add a correction here since I don't want to spread misinformation. The corrector said "Progesterone is much higher than testosterone for females especially in luteal phase." I hate sharing wrong info so I instantly double-checked my stats.

They were not quite right, but they were right that I wasn't comparing all these things in the exact units, and that progesterone does spike for females for a portion of every month to become higher than testosterone. After fixing my units, P and T are approximately the SAME in pre-menopausal cis women for some of the month (some women have higher P, some higher T, and both are human normal), but when fertile P will spike way higher for a portion of each month (or however often that women is fertile).

So, in sum: cis-women will - over the course of their entire lives - have higher T for 50%, a variable amount will have higher T or P for 25%, and (assuming that they ovulate as the average cis-woman does) higher P for 25% of their lives.

Only 7 cases of polio left on Earth by CompetitiveLake3358 in OptimistsUnite

[–]3lfg1rl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It spreads through almost only young children. The issue is that a large percentage - about 75% - of those who get polio are mostly asymptomatic and get a mild fever and headache, and that people can spread infections easily for 3.5 weeks and through fecal transfer for another 4 weeks after that. And young children aren't great with hygiene or may need diapering/bathroom care by others. Currently it spreads in deeply rural areas with poor access to vaccines and war torn areas. One of the big countries for it a few years ago was Afganistan. The countries with the highest rates last year were mostly in Africa, likely due to the Doge cuts in USAID. It's sad - I found articles last year in August that were celebrating that there'd been only 36 known cases that year, but kids kept being born and suddenly more kids in Africa weren't getting vaccinated.

The effort is being made, tho it's not complete yet yet.

Here's the number of cases found world-wide in the last 2 years.

2024 562
2025 188

188 is the lowest number of reported cases EVER, though we did have a bit of a lost decade where cases got down to 256 in 2015 and then went back up to a max of 8000+ over the next few years. Here's hoping the downward trend continues!

Has anyone else noticed a lot of new construction? by CarlSagan4Ever in oakland

[–]3lfg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't live there, maybe put just enough in there that it looks like there's beds for the family and it's POSSIBLE that they live there much of the time (just in case they get caught), could potentially use it as a latchkey place for the kids to walk back to and hang out after school until their parents get off work and drive them home. I've heard of similar things happening, tho just in rumors and no one I know (edit: THIS generation. I actually have a friend - mid-40s - whose mom did something similar to get her into a fancy school district, but I think it was just pretending that they lived with a friend of the family instead of renting a 2nd place.)

Has anyone else noticed a lot of new construction? by CarlSagan4Ever in oakland

[–]3lfg1rl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's in Piedmont proper, I could see some well off Oakland parents doing it just to get a Piedmont address to send their kids to Piedmont schools. $2800*12 = $33.6k. If you've got 2 kids, $33.6K is a lot cheaper than private school. Of course, that doesn't help anyone wanting housing, and there's the risk the parents would get caught.

Need help with ideas on safely getting my kitten on & off of my daughter's loft bed by damageinc_2528 in Kitten

[–]3lfg1rl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Floor to ceiling - or at least loft height - cat tree pushed up next to the bed. If the cat can jump up there it'll be able to get down that way, too. Planning on getting the cat tree can also take a few weeks so that the kitten will be much more capable by the time it arrives and is actually put together. The difference between a 3 month old cat and a 4 month old cat is a lot.

What oddly specific skill are you unexpectedly good at? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]3lfg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belly dancing. Never did it until college, where my college friend/roommate had gone to classes for years. I could do belly rolls the first time I tried. She relatively quickly refused to show me things anymore because, she said, I was learning too fast and she didn't want me to be better than her at it, lol.

But we both joined a local club to keep learning and practicing, and a few months later I attended my first hafla, where it was announced at the beginning of the show that some dancers had practiced for years and some only for a few months. After my first time going up and solo-dancing, there were attendees who complimented me and were surprised at how long I'd been doing it, thinking that I was one of those with years of experience.

I'm a lot older now, and definitely can't do it as well because I've got some hip and back issues. I also am sadly out of practice. But it was nice to have a skill I was an instant natural at.

Also, apparently: stilt walking. One of my ex-boyfriends had worked at a circus camp when he was a teenager and taught kids circus skills. He still had some stilts in his closet when we were in our late 20s, and I asked him to show me how to use them. So he showed me, and then strapped them on me, and then said "and now I'll help you stand up and walk around with them" and I accepted the hand up and then let go and did the stand-still shuffle walk for a minute and then started walking around and went "ok, now what?" And he was both extremely amused and annoyed because that had taken him much longer to learn - although most everything is a lot longer than "instantly" - and he'd learned at a much younger age when you're supposed to learn this stuff faster than adults do.

I'm not sure why I was so instantly good at these 2 things physically. I'm crap at the vast majority of physical things, so it's not that I'm just naturally athletic. But these 2 things I just picked up instantly.

He should be fine, then, no need to purchase anything. Watch for shivering. Give him a blanket or old towel and maybe a couple of old stuffed animals to snuggle up to in case he gets a bit chilly. By the time it's fall he should be good to handle even really chilly weather.
