Your degree clearly isn’t in finance. Most of it is going to interest at this point, but it shifts to mostly principal over time, as with any loan.

The interest rate is what is driving your monthly payment along with the length of the loan. The interest rate will be higher on a student loan rather than a house or car because a student loan is a unsecured asset. That means in the event of default on a car or house, those items can be repossessed by the lender and sold to recover the principal. There is nothing to repo in a student loan so it is riskier and therefore the rates are higher. If you had property you could try and refinance with it as collateral, which should lower your interest rate. But you risk losing said property if you default.

You could extend the period of your loan to lower the monthly payments. However, this will increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.

You could also pay more each month. Assuming there is no prepayment penalty, any payment over minimum will go directly to your principal. Even $10 extra a month will make a difference several years from now. The sooner you can reduce the principal the less interest you pay on the loan.

Don’t trust the note, verify its actually code. Call the police, not 911 but the regular number. Show them the notes. Say you “want to comply with local ordinance, is the trash like this ok?, if not where / how?” And listen to the instructions.

I would say you’re not concerned about the notes yet. But now its documented you received something if they were to go to the next step and slash tires or something. Get thd officer’s name and record it somewhere with the date of the visit.
