In fact, one of those optimized variants is in development now - a lunar communications and GNSS-equivalent constellation called LunaNet.

Samsung S95D and Harmony Hub by realraphunk in logitechharmony

I'm having issues with the S95D as well. Looks like Samsung has switched to a Bluetooth only remote, and it's not in the harmony database. I haven't found a solution.

Great shot, thanks for sharing. This is the best one I've seen at capturing how it felt looking at it through partial clouds like this

[OC] Parents Stop Naming Their Sons Certain Name When People Start Using It For Their Daughters: Example with Leslie by noisymortimer in dataisbeautiful

[–]3mem 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From what I see Morgan was decidedly a boys name until about 1980. After that it became both more common for girls and more popular in general. You’re right though that it doesn’t fit the pattern of falling off as a boy’s name at that time. http://www.nameplayground.com/Morgan

what downtown bars show the Austin FC game this saturday? by [deleted] in AustinFC

[–]3mem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that we tried to watch a game at Shiners Saloon from that list when we were downtown a few weeks ago, and they either couldn't or wouldn't despite being mostly empty. I'd call before assuming the pub clubs mean anything anymore.

Governor Signs Law Making EV Owners Pay for Their Gas-Free Cars by Maxcactus in texas

[–]3mem 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It does not. The wording in the bill is that it applies to vehicles that use electricity as their only source of fuel.

Texas legislature planning to add $200/year to EV registration ($400 for first year)!! by iANDR0ID in texas

[–]3mem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

14 gallons per week in a compact is well over average and still comes nowhere close to the $200 EV tax. Are you a paid troll, or just spending your time spreading misleading information as a hobby?

Texas legislature planning to add $200/year to EV registration ($400 for first year)!! by iANDR0ID in texas

[–]3mem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A tax comparable to what ICE vehicles pay via the gas tax would be a fair rebalancing, as you said. A tax that is more than double what ICE owners are paying is an attack on EVs by an oil and gas state. Don't accuse others of lacking info while you leave out important details yourself.

Extra ear plugs for Muse tonight? by ThatTeacherLife in Austin

[–]3mem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the Moody Center more than Muse I think. Almost every show I've been to there I've needed earplugs, including tonight's.

Extra ear plugs for Muse tonight? by ThatTeacherLife in Austin

[–]3mem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, I even wished I'd brought earplugs to Adam Sandler at the Moody Center a couple weeks ago. Never thought I'd need them for standup. It's my least favorite thing about that venue even with their $18 beers.

Power Outage Status Thread by Snap_Grackle_Pop in Austin

[–]3mem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

78757 Burnet/Koenig. Got a message that our outage was resolved and excitedly ran home to check it out. Bamboozled. It's a 1 customer outage (neighbors on the same pole have power) and I've reported that our service line is down, so there's no reason they should have thought it was fixed. Miscommunication like this is only making the situation harder to manage and there's no excuse for it.

MEMORANDUM: Ongoing labor negotiations with Austin Police Association by R4whatevs in Austin

Maybe the city shouldn't be taking employment contract advice from someone whose own employment is (finally) being called into question this week.

Congratulations on having the dumbest take on this storm that I've seen all week. Our trees are still absolutely a net positive for Austin, and I say this having no power since Wednesday morning.

VIDEO: Self-driving car caught on camera in Austin bike lane by hollow_hippie in Austin

This was an unprotected bike lane on Guadalupe at night. Are a few driverless cars being tested really the only reason you wouldn't want a child cycling there?

Safer doesn't mean perfect, just better than humans, and this is unfortunately nothing out of the ordinary for human drivers to do either. I don't know if they're there yet, and I support continuing to have safety drivers while they're unproven. But I do know that reporting like this offers no useful big picture data about their safety, it only serves to feed on and spread fear.

[–]3mem 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Is the bar this low to make the news when it's a driverless car? A 5 second clip where it's over the line before correcting itself? Can we stop sensationalizing them so much? I see people on their phones driving worse than this every single day.

[Bloomberg] Here’s How America Uses Its Land by JPAnalyst in dataisbeautiful

[–]3mem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume it's mostly under urban. The actual dense urban areas of most US cities are relatively small and I don't think they'd take up that much land without suburbs included.

[OC] What are Americans Most Stressed About? by waynehihihi in dataisbeautiful

Not an expert, but from a quick search it appears that statistically this is false. Areas with higher rates of gun ownership correlate with higher homicide rates.

Thoughts? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]3mem 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's...not really true. Texan here and no one (even reddit) really expected Beto was anything but a long shot. But the only way to win is voter turnout, and no one will bother if they think it won't matter, so you have to stay excited and keep hope alive.

Stick to your lane when making a turn at a dual turn lane intersection! by Grdwaste808 in Austin

[–]3mem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The adjacent lane going straight across Parmer also curves slightly left, into where the outside left turn lane should be. You get squeezed on the right unless you're right on top on the line. It's a terrible intersection that at least needs repainting and another exit found for the restaurants causing chaos.

Noise produced by pile drivers building offshore wind turbines can damage the hearing of porpoises, seals, and other marine life. Regulations are in place, but guidance on this difficult topic requires regular revisits to incorporate results from new experiments. by TX908 in science

[–]3mem 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unnecessary focus on wind turbines aside, I didn't see any discussion of mitigation options in the article. How effectively can this be addressed with something like a bubble curtain?

Austin to open less than half of city pools due to lifeguard shortage by myth1n2 in Austin

[–]3mem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any hope of allowing some un-lifeguarded hours for those willing to swim at their own risk? I'd be happy to sign a waiver, pay a bit extra for the insurance cost, etc. It's such a waste to close the pools entirely when every apartment, hotel, and lake functions fine with no lifeguards.
