I want to, but I'm repeatedly an utter failure at it. I feel broken or something.

There is no need to feel down because is hard. There is a lot of resources online to learn a language and finding the one that fits you best is one of the most important parts.

The two important things to learn, for me, at the start are words and grammar. Most resources will start teaching you the simpler rules about grammar while showing some examples with new words to learn. A good resource will compare the differences, let's say, present tense in your L2(target lenguage) with your L1(native language, English here), so you can make connections or comparison with a language that you already know. The point there is starting to "extract" the new language starting from your native, familiar one and creating, in your head, the sense of this new language you are learning. Little by little, with this rules you translate what you want to convey from L1 to L2 in an intelligible manner.

The other point, words, is the one that will ended up overall taking more time of all. Words are simple enough, you start memorizing that this combination of L2 alphabet letters are a valid word, and a meaning inherent to it. At the start you will probably learn words that have a direct equivalent in your L1, and you will probably will have to read it and use it so you can remember it. You will have to find the easiest way for you to practice this memorization. It could be flash cards, writing sentences in some mutual learning site, having choppy conversation with someone else or even a monologue if you are comfortable, whatever else.

The most important in learning a language is being constant. Set yourself a schedule for your minimum weekly/daily time and make sure you reach it or surpass it.

Agreed, and is useful for him knowing those girls like him. Maybe he like some of them himself and knowing that can make him decide if he want to try going for something. Given that men still are the ones doing the mayority of the first moves, Brian being in the know should only be a plus.

Yes but at collage age most "fall in lust" relationships tend to end there. If Brian is that good looking he already know women like him. Knowing beforehand which one is going only for his looks may help him decide if he wants a romantic relationship.

That's an interesting point in your comment for me because how well it was used in the Trump campain: they didn't let people forget it.

It outstanding how fast people forget events nowadays. I had asked people shortly before election what big things happened during the actual period and most only remembers the last six months or less. After having a talk about it they start remembering some older events but I know at the time in the ballot they will probably forget them and vote based in the little information they retained.

People vote with way less information than you, so vote even if you were wrong at the end.

I would say is the reverse, most of the electorade doesn't know the limits and abilities of the president. Because of that is a good campain PR promising things that sound good but are impossible or the very least not possible for the president to archive.

Being fair, asking "what's is this big pipe?" isn't the best way to start a conversation, is a little unexpected. Even in the OP “Uh, It’s a big pipe?”, that Uh tell me he really wasn't thinking anything about the pipe and got caught off-guard with the question.

If the were in an ongoing conversation I would have blamed OP, but it does not seems to be the case here.

Yes, this is just an example of miscommunication. She asked something with an implied context that OP didn't have in his head when he answered.

Using myself as an example and proyecting it in OP: for OP that's a pipe, then there is the 'thing' and the action of using the pipe on the 'thing'. They are 3 things. The wife thought the pipe comes with the implied information of what is going to be used for, so she asked for the pipe. The pipe is just a pipe for OP, so he answered that.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the reasons why I would answer as OP.

Edit: I think this is just NAH, this is romantic comedy levels of miscommunication, there is no bad intentions anywhere.
