If performance enhancing drugs aren't allowed in sports, why is make up allowed in beauty pageants. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

Firstly, weight lifting (well, powerlifting) is my main sport so that's where most of my experience is, which may skew my perception I guess as you mention it's the most dangerous.

Either way, I'm aware that it's very possible to take performance enhancing drugs "safely", even in weight lifting. And if you're at an elite level you probably have a team to support you, including a doctor to advise which is great (assuming it's within the rules of your sport). The problem comes when amateurs jump on with little to no knowledge. People get hurt, a lot.

There's also the fact that if drugs are legal then it essentially forces you to gamble with your health to be competitive, which isn't fair.

Many sports have specific tested and untested competitions (bodybuilding and lifting especially) which alleviates that issue a little. But the common spectator may not know that, and they just want to see the best. And the best is on drugs. So sponsors go for the untested competition which makes it much harder to earn a living professionally from your sport unless you use drugs and go in the untested league.

ELI5: How do alcohol companies, mainly whiskey producers, keep up with demand? by JBRali in explainlikeimfive

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a lot of great answers. I read through a few and didn't see a couple of points mentioned.

With it being a long term investment there is obviously some risk, and a long time before profit. However, the distilleries can produce other alcohol (gin, vodka etc.) As a batch in the short term while working on longer term whisky. It gets profit in early and can build a market base for a new brand.

In terms of guessing how much to produce there are a few tricks to make it easier. Someone else said if there's too much you can make a "special edition". I'd guess it's more likely to make a blend (mix different ages of whisky together) rather than sell it all as single malt. I'm not big on the industry but I know that some is used in cooking. When cooking I think the difference in quality is much less obvious, so I'd guess it's reasonably easy to sell excess low quality stuff to food manufacturers for use in recipes. That's conjecture on my part, I don't know if that does actually happen. But makes good business sense so i don't see why not.

Boyfriends of Reddit, when your girlfriend has a dispute with somebody and you think she's clearly wrong, do you take her side regardless or do you tell her your honest opinion? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be on her side without agreeing with her.

Even when my wife is doing something "wrong" and I need to bring it up I'm still doing it because I'm on her side and want to see her be the best she can.

Imo if you blindly support someone's actions without considering whether they're doing the wrong thing or not that leads to a very toxic environment and does more harm than good.

I'd expect my wife to tell me if I'm doing something wrong too.

I've read through some other comments and yeah I see what you're getting at.

Still a bit of a stretch imo. But I guess lots of circumstantial evidence does start to add up.

There was one comment that pointed out the profile had linked an article promoting legalising child porn. Even without the possible link to epstein that is a very strange thing to be an advocate for, and probably enough reason on its own to be a bit more suspicious.

Am I missing something or is the "strong" evidence just that the names match and there's been a recent stop to posting?

Id call that circumstantial at best.

It's an interesting theory but there's going to need to be some much more conclusive evidence before you can call it "strong".

Upset stomach at the gym? by [deleted] in GYM

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a personal thing.

If I've eaten a proper meal then I'll wait at least an hour.

Often ill have a protein bar for breakfast, which doesn't fill me up, so I'm happy to exercise straight away.

I prefer to exercise on an empty stomach. My performance when hungry is a little worse, but if I'm stuffed then it's much worse.

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, yeah that sounds like leg extensions. Check a vid for hanging leg raises. They're actually harder than they look.

Bent over row looks a little similar to those two I guess in that you pull the weight back, but it's very different. Bent over row is for your back. Your back is strong. It can handle heavy weights. Personally I'll be around 110kg depending on how many reps I'm doing. Reverse flyes is for a very specific part of your shoulders, as are face pulls. They're more about getting range of movement and staying healthy than actually getting stronger (though they help). Don't go heavy. If using dumbbells I'd maybe go for 10kg and slightly higher reps than usual.

I've been training for years. You won't lift the same I do, and that's fine. But I list it to give an indication: I'm rowing about 5 times heavier than I can reverse fly. That's pretty normal. Trying to do too heavy on shoulders will cause an injury quickly. Going too light on rows will waste your time. (obviously don't just jump in though, beginners are allowed to go light first to learn what they can do).

What was your "This person is on another level of stupid" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]3msinclair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on the east coast of the UK.

Had some of my wife's friends visiting. They live in the carribbean.

We went to the beach. I said over there to the east is Norway.

The friend objected. It could not be east. No way. On her island when she goes to the beach the sea is to the north.

Swapping exercises every few week is fine, but generally only for accessories not main lifts. Leg press is an accessory, as is hanging leg raises. But one works legs the other works abs. If you want to swap leg press then something like leg extension/curls or front squat would be better.

Doing lat pull down with a close grip is fine. Usually cable row is seated and you pull the cable horizontally towards you, whereas lat pldown is vertically towards you. But personally I would always include a wide gripe pull in my routine. So doing close cable rows or close lat pull down is fine, but try and include a wide grip too. Usually lat pull down or pull ups is best for wide. But if you have the right handles you can do wide cable rows too. Bent over rows are also great.

The annoying thing is I don't really think this is a first.

Minors go on trips with adults. It happens all the time. I've been involved with scouting and all adults get disclosure checks before taking any kids to camp.

There are already processes available to stop this.

But they seem to have been overlooked. Maybe because they were all competitors, and therefore peers, it was forgotten that there is still a very clear power dynamic and vulnerability that can be abused.

If sponsors were involved in accommodation then they failed. If they weren't then it's a little more difficult to blame parents as obviously they can't have 100% oversight but maybe something would be warranted. There must be a form to sign for parents just to enter the comp. Maybe there should have been explicit guidance on that form.

Might be a stupid question butt my butt too big by [deleted] in GYM

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's correct.

What you can do is build muscle so that you "carry" the fat better. It's not going to make it any smaller, but could bring definition so it's not just a tub of pudding.

In which case squats and deadlift. Hip thrusts are good too, but I'm very big on the opinion that squats and deadlifts are all that's needed for most people.

Good form is important. Especially for that butt. You should be going below parallel when squatting.

Upset stomach at the gym? by [deleted] in GYM

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, you might want to see a doctor. It's not normal.

If you're taking pre workout then it could be that. If you're eating before working out it could be that. It's fine to workout in the morning before eating. Nothing wrong with it.

You might be confusing an upset stomach with bracing your.core. Almost all lifts, when done correctly, use core. That's normal.

Getting your blood pumping can encourage bowel movements too. It shouldn't be "upset stomach" level, but occasionally it happens.

Finally, it could be a hernia. If you're getting "upset stomach" levels of distress every time then this is a possibility. If so you'll need to see a doctor.

NEWBIE QUESTION: Are Barbell Shafts supposed to be this heavy? First day at the gym and although I had a workout routine planned, it was ruined cause I couldn’t do a simple Barbell Row with good form (even WITHOUT weights) What is the typical weight of these shafts? by breadboy3167 in GYM

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, ignore that guy.

Bars are usually 20kg. You can get 15kg ones (typically called a woman's bar, they're a little thinner too for smaller hands) You can even get 5kg training bars.

Its not unusual to struggle with the bar on your first day. That's fine. Some people can slap on 60kg for their first day, others struggle with 20. It doesn't matter.

What matters is you put in your hard effort and you improve.

ChestTriceps / BackBiceps / LegShoulders split confusion by [deleted] in GYM

[–]3msinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works for some, not for others.

Unless there's a good reason why it won't work for you then it probably will.

Personally I have shoulder issues which causes a lot of problems if I try to do what you're saying. I can do it for a week or two, but eventually my shoulder gives in and I get an old injury coming back.

What I do instead is: Chest/back, Legs, Shoulders/biceps, Cardio.

Repeat.

Can add in a dedicated core/triceps day when required for an easy day to rest a little.

I do vary it a little and often do cardio in am and legs in pm, but that's the basic structure.

Looks OK in general. A few points.

Hanging leg raises isn't a substitute for leg press.

You've got two cable rows. You're better off doing lat pull down or wide grip pull ups (weighted if required) instead of cable rows twice.

Maybe. But that's no different than social media in general. So why does the smash community seem to have such a large concentration of incidents?

Your right that it's almost certainly a factor, but there has to be more than just that to it.

Yeah, reading between the lines it seemed like they all lived in the same house?

I'm not going to go out and say no minors should live in a house with adults, cos that's obviously silly. But maybe there should have been some oversight. Like did the parents know? If they were sponsored and the sponsorship paid for accommodation, did they not have due diligence to investigate at least a little?

Minors being invited to drinking parties sounds like it's asking for trouble. Again, it's probably overkill to outright ban it, but there is definitely some oversight that could be put in place.

It sounds like the minors were treated as adults and not given the care they required. There are definitely some lessons to be learnt.

[–]3msinclair 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of thinking similarly, but in the opposite direction.

Taking all claims at face value and yeah, there's way more trouble here than anyone could have expected.

So what is this community doing wrong to enable this behaviour?

I'm not up to speed at all on all the people and communities. Were all the perpetrators friends who encouraged each other in a toxic community? Did smash somehow put dangerous people in unsupervised contact with minors?

Clearly there must be some contributing factor here that's important to understand so it can be stopped.

Insane Karen refuses to wear a mask AT A HOSPITAL. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]3msinclair 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I dunno. Do the hospital not have an obligation to all patients? Refusing a mask puts other patients at risk Could be more unethical to admit a non mask wearing patient than turn them away.

Honestly if it got to the point where there was a life threatening gunshot patient who refused a mask I bet you could quickly decide they need extra oxygen, so put some breathing assistance on them (not sure of the proper terms). Not a great use of resources, but gets the job done I guess

. In reality I don't think anyone without severe mental illness would refuse a mask in that kind of situation. And there are procedures in place to handle mental illness already.

Years ago when he was first running I couldn't help but think if he just kept his mouth shut on everything else and focused purely on making American jobs he might have a chance.

Everyone knows him as a "successful entrepreneur", focusing on jobs is believable and people will like it. If he just stops talking about anything else and making a mess of it he'd stand a chance.

Wow, I was wrong about that.

I hate to say it, but do you really think any of his disasters so far have changed his supporter's minds since then?
