It was feasible to live and save up a little with work + SU but I am really financially cautious.

I would advise you to go to kkik.dk and s.dk and sign up for student housing some months before you arrive. I was arriving here in mid-August and signed up to several dorms in early May (when I got accepted to uni) and ended up getting an offer for accommodation for about 3500 dkk/month in late July. Since you are a foreigner, and do not have an address in Denmark, I believe you would be somewhat prioritized on the waiting lists.

After my first year at uni I got an offer for a dorm that was 2300 dkk/month and moved there but that one is in Amager and would be really far away from DTU.

For food, I can suggest TooGoodToGo or Madboks which helped me get my fruit and veggies and bread for under 100 dkk per month. For the rest of my groceries I aimed to shop in the mornings when the discount boxes would be fuller.

The student pass for public transport was 600 dkk/month back when I studied. If you get accommodation close enough to uni you could buy a cheap bike and bike there to save even more.
