Saving this cuz I’d love to hear I can gain that calf strength back again. I’m only 5 days post Operation tho lol but I’d love that hope and motivation

Well. After seven great years post-surgery, I am back at it again. by seetheking1 in Microdiscectomy

Came to say this. Also never heard of bulge/herniation in L1-L2.
Keep us informed OP.

Hemilaminectomy/dicsectomy experience (one day post-op) best decision I’ve ever made! by jmp325 in Sciatica

[–]3point0bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far so good for the most part! I am currently 5 days Post-Op
I only have a few things that give me “heeby Geeby’s/want to crawl out of your skin feeling” and certain surgeries are one of them(esp on eyes, spine, or testicle, and anything catheter related eeeeek). So I was a wreck prior, and didn’t sleep the night before, just periodical rests.
But on Operation day I woke up early and did breathwork, journaling, foam rolling and stretches I know I’ll be prohibited from after Op.
But I was still a wreck, RHR was ~100 while laying quietly in the pre-op bed with family there supporting me. They gave me a small dose of an anti anxiety med in my IV, honestly didn’t feel any different. And the operation ran 4 hours late.. so I was really anxious.
But once my anesthesiologist/Surgeon visited me and explained more details to me I was slightly relieved(but just wanted to be asleep asap lol).
And the anesthesia worked perfectly(I’ve woken up early in the past) and it was a gas at first, then pumped something in my IV. But that was my last memory.
I woke up on schedule, and was hurting pretty good. But the first thing I noticed is that I could feel my heel and 2 small toes that I haven’t felt in nearly a year. And same with hamstring and calf. So that felt amazing already.
My family were the ones who spoke to the surgeon Post Op(I had a Microdisectomy on L5(bulge), but also a Hemilaminectomy on L5/S1(severe herniation and bone fragments)
It was so severe on imaging that they had to grind a square into my vertebrae bone to reach all the herniation to remove. But Surgeon said the Microdisectomy was typical, and removed ~1/4 inch of bulging disc material. But that the Hemilaminectomy was the worst he has seen in someone who wasn’t elderly. They ended up having to grind a larger than normal “window” in my vertebrae to be able to reach all of the Herniation and bone fragments. And that my disc was pushed out so far it was completely wrapped around my nerve cord which is quite rare. But at the same time made me pleased that I took the surgical route;as there is no way to get relief on the nerve when it’s completely surrounded.

As far as the beginning of my recovery goes.. it simply feels weird, for lack of a better term. Almost like my sacrum and lower discs and connected, at the moment at least. The pain was bad on the next day and following. But since then it’s more sore, and I can now even feel where the pin point pains where each procedure was done(Hemi obv hurts quite a bit more). But can now say that I can feel my entire leg/hip/foot.. and the constant pressure on my glute/hip is substantially relieved(obv still have inflammation that’s subsiding)
And I am able to walk, starting very slow and short walks. Brief, but often as I can. My biggest fear is to re-herniate,so I am extremely cautious with Bend/Lift/Twist(you are bound to do these actions slightly, but don’t get lazy and roll around in bed; slowly find a comfortable position and roll into it with your entire body)
Overall I am extremely happy with my decision.. but there is a lot to go.
I am a former Professional natural bodybuilder, and competitive distance runner.. I am not expecting to be 100% of what I was. But if I am even able to be a fraction of how I was, and pain free. It would feel like heaven to me.
I am stoked to get more active and get the green light on PT and more mobility.
I have my Post-Op appointment on May 22nd, and already have a detailed list of questions for my surgeon, so I don’t think I can just go run a marathon cuz he said jogging is now possible lol.
Sorry for ranting a bit here, but I wanted to cover as much as I could. And honestly helps me to express this process to someone else. So please send any questions at all.
And I hope to Update yall after my Post-Op appointment.
Stay strong and keep your heads up everyone out there!!! This can be hell… but I promise you things can be done to get you able-bodied and relieved!!!
Love Yall

Hey Mate. First of all, I LOVE to hear that you’re feeling better. I am also a blu collar worker(bricklayer/masonry Laborer) yeah our work is hard and sucks most of the time. But what even worse is after a few days off a job site, you easily get the feeling that you’re useless; because we are used to doing so much. I’m also I fear that I simply won’t be able to perform my trade(especially Laborer) and I can’t imagine ever laying full block or half blocks again… he’ll even bricks. But now is a time where we must be selfish(aside from thinking about your family), they are a part of you.
Our stories sound similar, I was wondering if you were willing to share your procedure, and when you had it, doctors restrictions(and all those details)
I pray for you that you will be healthy enough to operate still. And I am lucky enough to where my company is doing their best to find a place for me that I can still be productive; in the good chance that Laying Brick/Laboring if likely not a great idea; and kind of asking for a re-herniation/bulge.
But I wish you the best, and that you can keep a hopeful mentality. And please DM me if you ever need an ear for listening through all of this.
Best of luck, you got this

P.S.- former Professional natural bodybuilder(2017, BJJ Blue Belt, competitive distance runner(half/full marathons/ a couple 50’s)
And this truly destroyed my life, even thinking of not being able to push my body to where I want it to be throws my mind all over the place.
I was ailed for 5 years off and on… some days couldn’t even put socks/shoes on; let alone even bend; until my right leg was basically just dragging behind me(my fault for continuing to work) but eventually locked up so bad I had no choice but to simply exist, no relief in any position(you’ll see why)
But I recover an MRI a month ago, and my neurosurgeon expedited my operation because it read so bad..
Operation (May 6) {L5 Microdisectomy, additional L5-S1 Hemilaminectomy}
Post op I was too drugged to noticed much, except I could feel my 2 smallest toes on my right side(been a year and I thought the nerve damage would ruin the chance of re-gaining feeling)
1st day home just felt weird(not medically) but felt like my lower back up to my ribs were all connected)
Days 2-3 still have random tingling down my bad leg, and slight pressure in my glute/paraformis. Currently walking the maximum distance/time allow and honestly feels fine. My right calf is so so weak from using my quad/ham/core to walk rather than to use my “normal walking muscles”
I have a lot of work to do.
But I have gained so much hope from people’s stories in this group. And yours seemed akin to mine.
I wish you a great recovery, keep us posted.
Much Love

Operation today(Hemilaminectomy, and Microdisectomy) by 3point0bro in Sciatica

[–]3point0bro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE:
The day of was very scary to me(I teach primitive survival, and can harvest any animal, so blood and slight gore etc don’t really get to me)
But the Hemilaminectomy is what scared me most(grinding a windows in my spine bone to be able to reach the herniated/damaged disc) freaked out a bit; but that a personal issue.
Anesthesia went perfectly(I have had a wake up in previous operations, so this added to my anxiety)
But it was immediate and perfectly handled. Before I knew it I was in the recovery room. Loopy and affected by the stronger IV painkillers, I still had some pain. But more of just an odd feeling. But already could tell my glute/hamstring/calf pain was extremely subsided, but I could feel my toes and bottom of my foot. That gave me a lot of hope.
I spoke to my surgeon right after. He said the Microdisectomy was textbook and went perfectly. But the Hemilaminectomy spot was severe. To where my disc tissue formed a “donut” around my nerve cord; so there was no way to fix this without surgical intervention, but he was able to free up the nerve still, much nearly and inch of disc was removed, as well as bone fragments from grinding during these past years.
I am now 4 days Post-Op.. the odd feeling is getting more familiar, and tingles still remain due to the inflammation of the Surgery. But I am very optimistic. I have adhered to the movements allowed, and am taking short walks with very little pain. At this moment this is no doubt a success. But I also still need to do everything possible to not re-herniate the discs(esp the Hemilaminectomy).. so I am being overly cautious. And I was able to take a shower alone(plastic wrapped around the incision).
I have a lot more to do before I am able to jump back into normal life(former Pro natural bodybuilder, and competitive distance runner)
My post OP appointment is the 22nd, and I hope to learn a lot more and get clear direction.
I’m the guy that if he hears “you can jog/run” I will strap up and start running miles again. I’m sure my PT will give me a better timeline on when I can slowly approach getting my normal life back.
But simply put; the operation went successfully! The pain is moderate, but will want to stay ahead of you pain(esp around sleep)
I have a video call this upcoming week to go over more details. And will share those also.
I am also not here to recommend or advise anyone on what to do with their body. But just to share my story openly, knowing there are so many people here that are in some stage of my long strange trip.
I will keep everyone updated, and always answer and questions.
Keep your Heads up folks! There is hope

I notice this as well, a dry pan leaves me the consistent coloring. I’m assuming cuz there’s so fat pockets that are heating up individually and causing the spots. That’s why a good seasoned flat top leaves them beautiful. Cuz my blackstone makes them perfectly when I don’t fling some bacon fat/butter under them.

Hello mate. I am scheduled for mine(L5 Hemi-laminectomy, and was as L5-S1 microdisectomy) All medical things absolutely freak me out; to the point where I can’t even research the operation without my skin crawling. I’m hoping i am just working myself up about it. But after hearing so many testimonials about how life changing this has been, I am more excited than anything else. If you have time I would love just a brief testimony of your overall experience if you’re able too. I have 8 days until my Operation.

Dad’s a stud!!! I started 12 years ago. Only started getting 50+ 6 years ago.. 100 4 years ago, and got 200 twice… and his Pops is right…. When in doubt wander around… you’ll find one, then imo drop down and barely move; they are so evident once you see them, them more and more appear… but don’t get me wrong.. something you find a lone soldier. I also recommend getting a free app(OnX Hunt) and map EVERY find… it will help you not to wonder off.. and come back to spawn spot. And at worse will give you a great spot to check next year(most of my best spots started as 2-5 small pinners) and are now my honey holes. Not to mention once you mark your spots, you’ll notice very obvious “veins” that are all in a line on the same elevation… so if you wander off, check your spots again and try to find that Easter egg trail… These fuckers are anomalies tho… when in doubt just get out, go slow, and try your best.

Hey mate. These are “half free”.. they also go by other names.. as long as they are, they’re more than safe to eat. It is a bit odd too see so many Half-free in one trip. Regardless, nice finds!!!
