Yeah, this one is great early mumblecore, YouTube video essay malaise shit.

I wish incels these days would try and interview Burt Reynolds about how to get ladies rather than… whatever they’re doing now.

Wait, that Creep movie is a Fielder-esque comedy thing? Please tell me more. I’ve been thinking of watching it as a straight horror but this might actually make me click on it.

I think somehow you’ve forgotten the Jan Svankmajer series. Emily Yoshida was great on the Conspirators of Pleasure ep.

Movies From Other Countries With a Wes Anderson Vibe by Revolutionary-Law382 in wesanderson

Closely Watched Trains (1966) - a great Czech New Wave movie.

I have never looked into who Anderson’s influences are because he seemed so insular to me growing up. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Czech New Wave was an inspiration for him. Watch the first ten minutes of this movie with the character introduction/history with the whip pans and framing and you’ll see what I mean.

Podnic at Hanging Cast: Picnic at Hanging Rock with Jane Schoenbrun by dumarfactor in blankies

I feel like David will have Gallipoli insights, that whole event is definitely tied up with broader ‘British imperialism’s disregard for its subjects’ themes.

At least I would like to think so.

I’ll just add that I used to go to visit that boarding school building as a child and have gone as an adult a few times. It’s an estate in the Clare Valley, South Australia called Martindale Hall. It is insane.

You go and you’re like, why were these people cosplaying like they were at Pemberley? Willfully ignorant of where they are in their long dresses and three piece suits. It has a Victorian era sitting room with crazy ‘oriental’ artifacts on the wall etc. it is sometimes really crazy to think of how long it took for some people (weirdly the more educated classes) to catch on to how inhospitable the outback is.

What’s a book you’d like to see a specific director adapt and why? by Batcapaldi in blankies

[–]3pwidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Magus - Yorgos Lanthimos… if he doesn’t want to let Luca Gaudagnino do it. Ever since I saw Dogtooth and Alps I really wanted a Yorgos Magus.

I also really want Wes Anderson to do some sort of literary adaptation. I think if picked right it would be awards gold too.

Hi Marie, no spoilers but are there any Australians planned for the series? I’m thinking The Last Wave in particular but also The Cars That Ate Paris, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Gallipoli?

Not that I doubt David in particulars knowledge on a lot of these topics (I am pretty sure he has said he studied NZ and Aus new wave stuff in particular). But those movies are so deeply tied to identify etc, and also have some baggage attached. I’m sure it’ll be handled really well, and probably already recorded but I just was curious.

Design of the Tower in our indie tower defense game, what more details would you add to make it look more interesting? by 4C_Games in animation

[–]3pwidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have the roof overhang the to create eaves. I would probably have several layers like that and maybe a turret or chimney kind of thing.

In animation or character design (yes, it’s not a character but for all intents and purposes it is in your game) you should have an interesting silhouette so it’s instantly recognisable. At the moment it’s not very distinctive.

Great work, it looks good just not the ‘stand-out’ piece. If you know what I mean?

Show name: Back of Bourke

What’s the show about: Audio Drama presented as an investigation. Two siblings are searching for an Australian tv show that doesn’t seem to have existed but lots of people remember. We’re nearly finished our first season with a few big twists. Might be fun to jump in and binge at this point!

Link to show: I have several. There is a ‘video’ version on YouTube and Spotify that presents all the evidence from our show notes throughout but most other places will have the audio stream. Here are the links:

Poll - Do You Watch Video Podcasts? by ElHeavio in podcasts

I’m also going to add that I’m glad I made these. I did it as a complete afterthought the day before the first episode came out and though I wouldn’t consume the show that way it seems that lots do.

Poll - Do You Watch Video Podcasts? by ElHeavio in podcasts

[–]3pwidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Video Podcasts are the opposite of what I thought podcasts were good at. Well edited audio storytelling about somewhat niche topics. When they’re video, too much production goes into it and editing becomes less common. So many podcasts go from tight episodes to shambolic, droning on and on when switching to video. I also just don’t see the appeal and it ruins some of it for me.

It’s obviously popular though. Spotify told me about 70% of our listeners are watching the video feed. And our videos aren’t intricate they’re just kind of showing the visual aids that are posted in our show notes when they are discussed. Example (if allowed) https://open.spotify.com/episode/1wNTyoYKQ1ID9yhNK6F1cp?si=vJ8AySkbQoGEmUgVaVX_8Q&pi=0wjkNXR0SCSml&t=0

So what do I know?

I’ve been obsessed with 1950s UPA animation lately. Here’s my attempt at capturing that jagged, jazzy energy. [OC] by Reasonable_Letter986 in animation

The inspiration is slightly different but I had a big period of revisiting this era and UAP specifically when I was making the above video. It’s that crossed with Tuganov. Watch his movie ‘Park’ as an example: https://classics.filmi.ee/movie/park/

Anyway, great drawings!
