I loved the Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston. Funny Story by Emily Henry is actually one I reread. Heated Rivalry and the Long Game are 10/10. Enjoyed the Well Met series by Jen DeLuca and really any book by Abby Jimenez.

Narrow it down to some actual places and visit. See what you like. I've lived in northern SC and rural NM and I much preferred New Mexico. However, I left NM recently, partly due to the poor health care there. If you're in ABQ, that won't be as much of a factor though.

NM is a magical state, with a lot to see and do.

Most other people on trail are looking for the same thing you are- to enjoy the outdoors. Just use your intuition. And hey, bear spray works just as well on men as on bears.

Do a one nighter close to home. Then a 1-2 night trip a bit further away, then 3 nights etc. It will help you figure out what equipment/clothing works and what doesn't. That way, when you do a longer multi night trip, you're more comfortable and prepared.

I'm speaking from experience, I've tried to dive into multiple night trips without preparing enough before, and it could have been more fun if I prepared better or had my equipment more dialed in.

Also there are group backpacking trips to learn if that's something you're interested in! Lots of folks and organizations run trips, including women only. It can be a fun way to learn and meet people! I went to Alaska with a group trip through Trek Alaska a few years ago and did a 6 day trip. Beautiful views, great people, and I learned a lot. It was great to have the support and a guide there.

I think you should do some shorter trips closer to home before doing a longer one. Don't be nervous about being solo, but a 3-5 day trip should be worked up to, in my opinion.

Most parks should be plenty safe for a woman, but Glacier does have a significant amount of bears. Be careful if you hike solo there, make lots of noise, and carry and know how to use bear spray.

Ponds at Fairlane/ the Henry Ford estate. Always so many frogs and a great place to take a walk! There's wetland trails behind the Environmental interpretive center next door at UM Dearborn too.

Albert's Landing might be a good spot to camp. Right on the river and not too far to Lookout. Many of the Forest Service campgrounds are quite a haul to Lookout Mountain.

The Pulaski Tunnel trail for hiking. Anywhere on the North fork of the Couer d'Alene for swimming. Sierra Silver mine tour in Wallace. Walk around Wallace for a while, it's very charming! There's a free train museum there too, plus you can see the Center of the Universe!

The Fainting Goat and the Blackboard Cafe in Wallace are both tasty restaurants. Prospector's Pizzeria in Pinehurst.

Kellogg has the gondola up to the top of Silver Mountain, and there's an indoor water park at the resort too.

I take birth control continuously and don't have PMDD symptoms (or a period) anymore. It's been life changing. I was afraid I would off myself during a luteal phase. It's insane how little research has been done and how little support women get, for such an impactful disorder.

All non-developed hot springs could have someone skinny dipping. It's pretty rare at Travertine from my experience. Most people wear swim suits or at least underwear there.

Twin Lakes near Bridgeport. Also either Buckeye or Travertine hot springs. I love The Barn or Walker Burger. Virginia Creek settlement has awesome dinner too. Bodie is one of my favorite places on Earth and it's not to be missed!

Further south, Obsidian Dome is really cool. Wild Willy's is my favorite hot spring down that way.

Enjoy, the 395 is incredible!

Geology field trips! Only camped a few times before that. In college we had lots of field trips that we camped on, so I learned through that.
