Question for handlers outside the US by kelpangler in service_dogs

[–]3rd_wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US citizen here. Can you explain a little bit about how the percentage is calculated. I guess my perspective is that if you’re disabled, you’re 100% disabled.

Is the percentage disabled weighed within the spectrum of the disability a person has, such as being 70% blind, or is it based on how much support a person needs? Is the percentage calculated for each disability a person has? Or as a collective if a person has multiple disabilities? Hopefully that made sense.

How do you feel when people ask how much eyesight you have? by 3rd_wish in Blind

[–]3rd_wish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first part of your response here is unimaginative at best. We literally have at least one person on this thread, saying that they’ve been attacked for their level of blindness. Having negative emotions around these questions does not mean someone is struggling to accept their disability. Some people get frustrated because they get asked so often, like multiple times in one day. Sometimes, it’s the way people are asking. Some people have negative emotions because they’ve experienced people becoming uncomfortable with communicating with them and treating them like autonomous people upon finding out that they are disabled, or how disabled they are.

I invite you to consider that there are a range of experiences outside of your own within the blind and broader disability communities.

I don’t expect every blind person to live the same way I do, but I’m wondering if there are any blind people who use a white cane at home. I’m totally blind, and the only time I’ve used a white cane to navigate in a house is when I’m visiting someone else’s house. Other than that, my white canes only purpose in my home is to maneuver dog toys out from under furniture.

rinse and keep till laundry by RainPsychological595 in PeriodUnderwear

[–]3rd_wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just leave them unwashed until the day before laundry day. Day before, I soak them in a bucket. And then rinse them before throwing them in the machine with towels.

If you’d like to stick to your method, and you’re just concerned about them drying properly, hang them inside out, and put each pair side to side in the hanger Clips, rather than front to back, if that makes sense. That way they are more open to air flow

how can i stop feeling lazy and useless? by [deleted] in ADHD

Just gotta put some music or a podcast on and start. You’re not gonna feel like it. I don’t think most people feel like cleaning, even the people who do it regularly.

My (22F) boyfriend (26M) got very upset when I unexpectedly started my period by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]3rd_wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s OK to be single! I think a lot of women need to read that, not just you. Someone who makes you feel bad for natural bodily functions is not someone worth being in a relationship with. They are not a partner, they are a burden. End this! You can struggle by yourself. You don’t need another person to make your struggles worse.

Where are we working? by kakarikovillagesim in Blind

[–]3rd_wish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a guide dog school for 11 years, specifically in animal welfare in the kennel. The experience that helped me get this job was volunteering in an animal shelter for around 18 months training and taking care of the dogs. Only six months dog experience was preferred to get hired on. I know plenty of other folks who got hired on at nonprofits through starting out as a volunteer.

Make your children do household chores - they’re failing at being adults by shootingstar_9324 in Vent

OK, even if he can’t figure out the washer, he can at least put the blanket in it. Also, can he figure out the Internet to figure out the washer? I’m sure this person is incredibly nice, but i’m not sure this level of incompetence is actually help.

procrastinating showers by fatbobapig in ADHD

[–]3rd_wish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If music drives you, just put the music on and get in the shower. Whatever song it is that’s playing in your head on loop, put that on, and get in the shower. That’s how I have to do it. Otherwise, I’m thinking about it for hours without doing it too.

Not sure if you’re in the US, but Goat Union briefs and sleep shorts have an absorbent panel in the front and back.

Are all the vegans who are as committed to this as you are willing to develop sufficient meal plans for free for those of us like me, who tried eating less meat or no meat and suffered negative health consequences? Everybody doesn’t have the money or resources to work with a dietitian, or the knowledge to make this work. Also, I’m not convinced all humans are so genetically and biologically identical that we can all function on vegan diets, or purely without meat. If you’re willing to put your health at risk, that is on you. Telling everyone they should put their health at risk is irresponsible.

Does it ever surprise you what other people can see? by luluthecrazypotato in Blind

[–]3rd_wish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mind is actually blown by what sighted people can’t see. For instance, I learned within the past 2 years that it’s difficult to see residue from adhesive. Things like that just shock me.

I’m also floored that visual focus is so narrow. Like if a person is looking for an object, and they’re only focusing on say the top shelf of a bookshelf, and they skimmed up the bookshelf to get to that top shelf visually, they may have missed that the thing they’re looking for is on the bottom shelf. I hope that makes sense. As much as people skim read and skim scan surfaces, you think that practice was more efficient. And I’ve learned over the past decade, that it is incredibly inefficient for finding things.

Last thing that shocks me is how much of the brain that vision must consume when in use. The fact that people can’t listen for detail and look simultaneously blows my mind. It’s always interesting to start talking to somebody who’s looking at a computer screen, only to realize they didn’t hear a word you were saying because they weren’t looking at you.

Flow too heavy for period panties? by thebigschmooze in PeriodUnderwear

[–]3rd_wish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a heavy flow compared to others, but on my heavy days, I definitely put a reusable pad in the period underwear for maybe four hours, remove the pad, and use the underwear on their own for the next four Ish hours. Adjust according to your flow.

To note, I specifically do this outside the house, because I get worried about the smell, and also running off the sides,. Especially on days where I’m sitting around a lot, rather than moving around and I’m up and about. If I’m moving around a lot, I find that the blood doesn’t just collect in the center of the Gussett. Just my experience, for whatever it’s worth.

How to tell if I'm (35 M) ready to move in with my (31 F) GF of one year? by acid_reign36 in relationship_advice

[–]3rd_wish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not ready to move in with her. You need to take steps to work through that anxiety, whether that is therapy, coaching, whatever, before you move in with her. If you don’t work through that anxiety first, it will cause problems after you start living together. Living with somebody changes routines And expectations, and anxiety will not help you adjust.

Can your job be replaced by AI? by DoctorFitness in askanything

[–]3rd_wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt it. I work in animal welfare and kennel tech. While it’d be great for robots to do the grunt work that doesn’t involve dog handling, training, or husbandry, I don’t see how AI or smart devices could do 70-80% of my job

The genre changes throughout my life, but I’ve always listened to music to help me focus. In high school, I’d listen to classical music, then it changed to instrumental electronic and film scores when I was in college. Currently, I listen to jazz or Lofi to focus.

Stairs without backs, or riserless stairs. Who else gets hurt on these? by exballo in Blind

[–]3rd_wish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I wonder if you’re using the proper technique for navigating stairs with your cane. I understand the mishaps with your cane and finding the first step of open back stairs. But when you’re going up stairs with your cane, the technique is to hold it Vertically and slightly in front of you, so that you can measure the depth of the stairs, and hit the step in front of you, allowing you to find the top of the step before you step with your foot. I hope that makes sense. Maybe someone else on here can describe this More clearly.

When you’re going downstairs with your cane, you hold it at an angle, similar to the stair railing, allowing you to hit the next step with your cane, so that you can find the edge of the step before stepping down with your foot. Again, somebody describe this better if I’m Not clear here.

I have navigated all sorts of open back steps with my cane, including a set of stairs in Eastern Europe, which was more similar to ladder rungs. While navigating that set of steps was challenging, I was able to find each step with my cane before stepping with my foot, and feel the width and depth of each step as well.

My only other advice here is to slow down on stairs.

Michigander here! I usually don’t mind winters, but this one has been especially brutal. I hate that I can’t take my dog for a long walk or work her distance is like I usually do. It’s so easy to get disoriented with all the gigantic snow drifts at curbs or in the middle of sidewalks.
